INSTITUT NATIONAL D'ÉTUDES DÉMOGRAPHIQUES 133, boulevard Davout 75980 PARIS CEDEX 20 Competition : n° 2016.01 (position offered in 2016) Level : Researcher, category 2 (TWO POSITIONS) Job description : Demography and associated disciplines Required qualification : PhD Place of work : INED, PARIS 20TH ARRONDISSEMENT No age limit, all nationalities JOB DESCRIPTION: RESEARCHER The main mission of the French Institute of Demographic Studies (INED) is to study the national and international demographic situation and to analyse population trends. Multidisciplinary by vocation, its range of expertise covers both the study of purely demographic phenomena, such as nuptiality, fertility, mortality, migration, etc., and demography applied to social life, the economy, public health, human geography, history and more… INED is offering TWO researcher positions (category 2, CR2) in 2016. The candidate's speciality shall concern one of the following disciplines or topics (no order of priority) - Speciality A: Speciality B: Speciality C: Speciality D: Analysing causes of death to understand long-term mortality trends Economics and demographic questions History of populations, 18th and 19th centuries Demographic dynamics, societal changes and political transformations in the southern Mediterranean - Speciality E: Demography and associated disciplines Speciality A: Analysing causes of death to understand long-term mortality trends Reasons for recruitment : INED has developed considerable expertise in cause-of-death analysis. Its research focuses on the dominant diseases (cardiovascular disease, cancers, infectious diseases), on so-called social diseases (linked to alcohol and smoking, etc.) and on emerging pathologies in the context of population ageing. It covers not only France, but all countries with reliable cause-of-death statistics, in a comparative perspective. Analysing causes of death is key to understanding mortality trends. It sheds light on the main drivers of these trends: from the health crisis to a resumption of progress in Eastern Europe; from the delayed transition in sub-Saharan Africa to the continuous rise in life expectancy in most Asian countries; from the massive mortality decline at advanced ages in Japan and France to the stagnation observed in the United States or the Netherlands. Understanding the specific experience of each country and world region also contributes to the general debate on the concept of the epidemiological or health transition. The recruited researcher will guarantee the long-term future of INED's international expertise in cause-ofdeath analysis. Job description : The recruited researcher will take part in major international projects ("Diverging Trends in Mortality and Future Health Challenges" and a project on multiple causes of death) in which the Mortality-Health-Epidemiology unit is involved. He/she will take part in: - the long-term reconstruction of consistent series of deaths by cause to take account of changes in the International Classification of Diseases; - research on multiple causes of death, taking account of both the underlying and contributing causes of death mentioned on the death certificate. He/she will help to design new projects in these fields. Necessary qualifications (disciplines) : Holder of a PhD in demography, epidemiology, public health, geography of health, etc., with a solid grounding in statistical analysis and detailed knowledge of the medical aspects of mortality. Experience required : The applicant must have a good knowledge of standard demographic and statistical analysis methods. He/she must be capable of managing large databases. Experience of research into causes of death using the International Classification of Diseases, or a medical background would be a plus. Speciality B: Economics and demographic questions Reasons for recruitment : INED's Economic Demography research unit examines the links between demography and economics, from both micro and macro perspectives. Its research strands focus on the interplay between demographic events and the economic dimensions of individual lives (links between family events and working careers, fertility choices, conjugal strategies, intergenerational relations, migrant integration, child development, educational trajectories, socioeconomic determinants of health), and the relationship between changes in population age structure – population ageing especially – and the economic situation (adaptation of social welfare systems to demographic change, intergenerational transfers, wealth disparities). Particular attention is paid to the effects of public policies on these links. The unit conducts its research in the framework of national and international partnerships (Labex OSE Ouvrir la science économique- headed par PSE, National Transfer Accounts, Labex Ipops - Individus, Populations, Sociétés-) within a multidisciplinary institute. The Economic Demography unit is seeking to strengthen its research capacities. Job description : The recruited researcher will contribute to the scientific activities of the Economic Demography unit. He/she will conduct research on the following topics: the consequences of demographic ageing, changes in fertility and family structures, inequalities between and within families, links between family and working life, economic aspects of migration. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the heads of unit for more information. Necessary qualifications (disciplines) : Researcher with a PhD in economics, with a specialized interest in population economics. International research experience and an interest in the other social sciences would be a plus. Experience required : The applicant must have a solid mastery of quantitative methods for analysis of French and international population databases. Extensive knowledge of econometrics, public policy assessment methods, or of longitudinal analysis and panel data is required. Research experience in the fields covered by this job description is necessary. Speciality C: History of populations, 18th and 19th centuries Reasons for recruitment : The work of the "History and Populations" unit is built around three fundamental themes: history of knowledge, history of populations and paleodemography. Considerable efforts have been made in recent years to expand, develop and exploit major French historical surveys, for which INED has always been a centre of reference (enquête Henry, enquête Biraben, enquête TRA, etc.). It is of key importance for the unit, and for INED as a whole, to make optimal use of these mature surveys, in a field of research which has now reached international prominence. There is an urgent need to recruit new talent in the field of population history. Job description : As a member of the "Quantitative History of Populations" team of the "History and Populations" research unit (UR11), the recruited researcher will expand and develop research questions in this field. His/her research will serve as a starting point for developing external collaboration, both in France and abroad. In particular, he/she will contribute to analysing the major historical surveys conducted by INED, and may initiate new ones. Necessary qualifications (disciplines) : A PhD in modern and contemporary history, demography or other social science discipline involving a historiographical dimension. A solid grounding in economic and social history, historical demography or history of populations. A capacity for dialogue with demographers and mastery of current methods for re-examining historical sources. A capacity for dialogue with historians of knowledge, and interest in questions of intellectual history. Experience required : Doctoral and/or post-doctoral research in the required field, notably experience of working with archives, creation and analysis of a historical database. International experience a plus. Speciality D: Demographic dynamics, societal changes and political transformations in the southern Mediterranean Reasons for recruitment : INED has longstanding experience in demographic analysis and the study of how population dynamics affect social transformations in the southern Mediterranean countries (family, marriage, migration, education, etc.). In the current context of upheaval in the Arab and Muslim worlds, INED's rich and diverse contribution to knowledge of societies in this part of the world is essential, and must be pursued by recruiting new young researchers to work in this field. Job description : The successful applicant will be required to analyse the societal transformations under way in the southern Mediterranean, to identify the markers and the actors of these changes, and the roles of institutions and political players. He/she may join the "Identities and Territories" research unit (UR12) and take part in two key projects, one of which focuses on "identity and otherness" and the other on "demographic changes and democratic transitions" in North African countries. Depending in his/her background and research specialities, the recruited researcher may also collaborate with another INED research unit. Necessary qualifications (disciplines) : Applicants must have in-depth knowledge of all or part of this region of the world, a multidisciplinary background combining mastery of statistics and training in the social sciences. Experience required : Comparative analyses over the long term or in the contemporary period, combined with a critical approach to sources, categories and methods. Field experience in countries bordering Europe (Maghreb, Egypt, Turkey, Central Asia, etc.) would be appreciated. Speciality E: Demography and associated disciplines: You may apply if you have skills in demography or in another discipline of interest to INED, and a qualification in quantitative methods. An interest in comparative analyses at international level and/or specific knowledge of the demography of the French overseas départements would be especially welcome.
