WELCOME TO THE MATER CLINICAL SCHOOL
Welcome to the University of Queensland at the Mater Clinical School. We hope you will have great
learning experiences here as your training in Medicine continues and that you will find your rotation with
us interesting and stimulating. We look forward to helping you improve your knowledge and skills and to
develop appropriate attitudes towards your future education.
Problems or queries regarding this rotation should be directed to the Student Co-ordinator. It is the
student’s responsibility to check the Learn.UQ [Blackboard] site and their student email for any timetable
changes, examination timetables or urgent messages.
THE MATER HOSPITALS
Mater provides exceptional care to more than 500,000 patients each year. A Queensland icon, the not-forprofit provider of health services operates seven hospitals, a medical research institute, pathology and
pharmacy businesses—all of which are underpinned by community support through the Mater Foundation.
Through its collocation of private and public facilities, Mater is able to meet the needs of the community
by reinvesting any revenue from the business back into the provision of health care services.
Founded in 1906 by the Sisters of Mercy, Mater’s board of directors and staff have since upheld the
philosophy and Mission of offering compassionate care to the sick and needy according to the values of
mercy, dignity, care, commitment and quality.
With more than 7500 exceptional staff and volunteers, a commitment to clinical care, research and
education, Mater is able to offer a comprehensive range of services to meet the needs of our community.
We do this in the spirit of Mercy.

Mater Mothers’ Hospital - 142 beds; 79 neonatal cots; 4800 deliveries per year
Mater Private Hospital - 281 beds
Mater Private Hospital Redlands – 60 beds
Mater Health Services offer secondary and tertiary level services across a wide spectrum of ages and for a
wide variety of medical and surgical disorders. Women’s Health and Paediatrics are very well represented
at the Mater site. High level specialist services are also provided for adult patients, particularly in the areas
of transitional care for chronic disease (e.g. cystic fibrosis / diabetes) and in oncology.
Evidence based practice is strongly encouraged, with the Mater housing the Queensland centre for the
Cochrane Collaboration.
The Mater Medical Research Institute is particularly active in basic science and translational research in the
areas of haematology, oncology and mucosal diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Perinatal and childhood
research programs are also well developed.
Today, Mater hospitals are at the forefront of clinical excellence and are always developing new methods,
practices and techniques for better patient outcomes. Mater hospitals have a reputation of international
acclaim for world-leading health care advances and the individual hospitals are regularly acknowledged for

their outstanding contributions to health care.
Taking advantage of on-site research and education facilities, staff at Mater hospitals have access to the
most advanced and innovative techniques for management of illnesses and disease, as well as information
about cutting-edge techniques in medical and surgical procedures.
Mater Health Services is adjacent to the Mater Hill bus-way station of the South East Bus-way, and is a
five-minute walk from South Bank Railway Station.

Professor David McIntyre is Head of the Mater Clinical School and Director of
Obstetric Medicine at Mater Health Services, South Brisbane.
Professor McIntyre's research and clinical interests cover medical disorders of
pregnancy, regulation of foetal growth and intensive therapy of Type I
diabetes. He is also a past President of the Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy
Society and served as Co-Chair of the National Diabetes in Pregnancy Advisory
Committee for the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing during
that period.

To page a doctor you should –
 Dial 6* you will be asked to “enter pager number”.
 After you have entered the pager number you will be asked “enter message”
 Put in your phone extension number and then press the # button. You will now hear “message
sent”.
 Hang up and wait for the doctor to return your call.
UNDERSTANDING THE HOSPITAL
During your first two years of medical school you have had consistent patient contact, perhaps at Mater,
perhaps not. You have learnt to take a history and perform basic examinations but probably not spent a
great deal of time as part of a medical team immersed in the day-to-day running of a hospital. Here are a

INFECTION CONTROL
The management and staff at Mater Health Services are committed to providing exceptional care through
the promotion and implementation of current infection control standards. Please ask your family/visitors
to stay home if they have, or have had exposure to, infections such as measles, chickenpox, diarrhoea, or
respiratory infections such as influenza. If they need to visit, please ask staff on the ward about any special
precautions required.
If you or your visitors have a respiratory illness with a cough please adhere to cough etiquette:
 cover your mouth when you cough
 cough or sneeze into a tissue to cover your nose and mouth. Dispose of the tissue immediately
 ask for a surgical mask
 keep at arm’s length from others to prevent further spread of infection
 wash your hands.

Prior to commencing your clinical rotations here at the Mater Clinical School you must complete the
modules attached to the link above and present the certificates to your student coordinator.
Hand washing is the single most effective way of preventing the spread of infection. Please ensure that you
wash your hands after any activity that could possibly contaminate your hands and encourage your
family/visitors to wash their hands before entering and exiting your room.
The most effective way to wash your hands is with soap and water. Apply the soap and water and rub
firmly covering all surfaces of your hands for 10 to 15 seconds. Rinse well and completely dry your hands.
Alternatively, apply hand wash gel/spray and rub all over your hands. Allow the gel to dry—do not wash
off.
If you notice someone forgets to wash their hands, politely remind them that hand hygiene is important.
By doing this you are helping to keep yourself, and others, safe from germs while in hospital.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping Mater maintain high standards of infection control practices.

Patient Consent
The hospitals have requested that the following procedure is adhered to when seeing patients.

Code Of Conduct
Medical students are required to conduct themselves in a professional manner. This includes:
•
Respecting the laws and regulations relating to the practice of medicine in Queensland, and at this
hospital;
•
Respecting other staff, patients and their relatives at all times.
Medical students are not to take on responsibilities or carry out procedures that are beyond their skills
or experience. There are always more senior medical officers on-site at the hospital. Appropriate advice

and guidance must be sought on any clinical situation about which a medical student is unsure.

Patients’ Rights to Confidentiality and Privacy
Information contained in medical records and/or divulged by patients and their carers is to remain
confidential. Patients and their families have the right to privacy. This means they may choose not to
divulge some personal information. Patients who are being examined or treated should be adequately
screened and covered at all times during the procedure.
Patients’ Consent to Examination and Treatment
Patients have the right to withhold or withdraw consent at any time. Their consent must be sought before
any examination or treatment. They must be provided with explanations, which will enable them to decide
whether or not to consent.
To attempt to examine or treat a patient who has not consented, and who seems in any way unwilling to
be examined, could expose the examining person to a charge of assault.
WARD WORK



Unless otherwise stated or a student is “on call” medical students are not permitted to see patients on
the wards after 6.00pm (unless “on-call”).
Medical students must have all patient chart entries countersigned by a JMO or Consultant.
Photocopying of patient information is not permitted.
You should spend as much time as possible in the wards seeing patients. Students should be familiar with
the history, examination, investigations, differential diagnosis, treatment and progress and follow-up of
each patient.
MOBILE PHONES OR iPADS
Mobile phones and/or iPads MUST be switched off whilst in clinics, ward rounds and theatres.
MATER CLINICAL EDUCATION COMMUNITY
You are enrolled in the Mater Clinical Education Community available on Learn. UQ (Blackboard) [http://www.elearning.uq.edu.au/].
This excellent resource provides online modules of education sessions accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week. It provides quizzes to test your knowledge on topics covered in the education session modules with
instant feedback and scores.
The Education Calendar of events provided for junior medical staff is also accessible to you and you are
encouraged to participate. Details of sessions and venues are available by clicking on the Education
Calendar and then on the event. You are most welcome at all education sessions.
The Mater Clinical Education Community site also provides discussion boards to communicate with other
students and junior medical staff and a preview of the Queensland Interns Assessment Form.
STUDENT ACCESS TO PATIENT INFORMATION - VERDI
You will be provided with access to the Mater Patient Information System, VERDI, for the duration of each
rotation at the Mater Clinical School.
Please be advised it is illegal to disclose confidential patient information. To do so breaches the University

of Queensland code of conduct, Mater Health Service Policy and Code of Conduct. It is immaterial that
patients or staff are not specifically identified, that it is done during non-working hours, or that it is done
with the best of intentions.
Disclosure of any kind including social networking sites or any other forum will be subject to immediate
disciplinary action, removal from the Verdi system, and notification to the University of Queensland.
Breaches may also be subject to formal complaints being made to bodies like the Health Quality and
Complaints Commission and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, legal action for
defamation or breach of privacy.
Please be aware that the patients and Mater staff members have legal rights too, and may pursue these
against a student and/or the university.
PROX CARDS
Prox cards provide access to certain areas in the Mater Hospitals Complex. These cards are limited and
must be signed in and out. These cards are controlled by Mater Security and provide details of the cards
use. Please contact the Student Coordinator administering your rotation to organise Prox cards.
Loss of card will incur a penalty of $20 payable to Mater Security Department.
BLUE CARDS
A blue card is essential for all students undertaking the MBBS program. Whilst in the hospital your card
must be displayed when asked. This will be checked prior to starting your rotation.
Please note: A student must hold a current blue card throughout the program. Students will be banned
from the Mater Children’s hospital if they do not possess an up-to-date Blue Card.
THEATRES
There is to be no more than one student in any theatre. All Students have been directed to “wear a red
hat so that they can be easily identified by all members of staff”. Students should be very aware of their
surroundings whilst in the theatre environs. Students should be very aware of any cords on the floor.
PERSONAL INJURY
Should a student sustain an injury whilst in the Mater Hospitals, e.g. a “needle stick injury” you should
report it to the hospital and a University member of staff IMMEDIATELY.

The UQ/Mater McAuley Library is located at Aubigny Place, Mater Health Services, South Brisbane.
[Mater Health Services is adjacent to the Mater Hill bus-way station of the South East Bus-way, and is a
five-minute walk from South Bank Railway Station.]
Library facilities include 3 Mater intranet and 23 PCs connected to the UQ Library network, giving access
to: UQ Library catalogue; Databases and electronic journals; Internet and email; Online course material
Three PCs connected to the Mater network, Training Room with 12 UQ computers, Group and individual
study areas, photocopying and network printing (including printing from the Mater intranet).

WIRELESS INTERNET NETWORK
Eduroam is a secure wireless network available to University of Queensland staff and students which is
available across UQ including the Mater Clinical School and has been recently upgraded for increased
capacity and reliability. Eduroam has excellent network security. It encrypts traffic between your
wireless device and the base station. Eduroam allows full access to the Internet including Skype and
RealPlayer, which will not work with UQconnect. It also allows trouble free use of such programs as MSN
and Wimba, which have also experienced problems.
No matter whether you are using Eduroam at UQ, nationally or internationally, Eduroam only requires you
to sign in once, rather than having to sign in every single time you connect. It automatically signs you into
the UQ Traffic Management System as soon as you connect to the Eduroam network. Your student
download quota will continue to work the same way as before. If you have an iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad,
after setup Eduroam will eliminate the need to constantly sign in.

LOCKERS AND KEYS
Lockers are located in various locations near the Student Common Room. Please supply your own padlock.
If you no longer come to the Mater, please remove your padlock and remove all belongings from your
locker. All lockers must be emptied of their contents by the 2nd week of December after which any
padlocks remaining will be cut off and all contents in the locker will be disposed of. Please contact the
Student Coordinator to secure a locker.
Please note: Lockers should not contain food as it will attract rodents and insects. Also, the area in which
lockers are currently stored becomes exceptionally hot and inappropriate for food or electronic equipment
(laptop) storage.
TRANSPORT
By car
 From the M1 to Stanley Street or the William Jolly Bridge through the South Bank Precinct
By bus
 Mater Hill Bus Stop is on the Southern Busway. Buses run every 10 minutes to and from the city.
The stop is on Stanley Street. Please contact Translink via 13 12 30 for further information or
schedules.
By train
 Mater is a short walk along Stanley Street from South Bank Station. Please contact Translink via
13 12 30 for further information or schedules.
Parking
 University of Queensland Medical Students can park at student rates in the Mater Hospital car
parks. Currently, Cark parking is $10 per entry, Motorcycles can park for $8. The discount is not
transferrable to other individuals and cannot be used outside your hospital attendance
requirements for student purposes. Car-parking attendees will inform the University of any
breaches and your discount will not be validated. Parking attendants answer calls between 6.30 am
and 9.30 pm Monday to Friday, and 11.30 am to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Calls outside these
times will be diverted to security. Phone: 07 3163 8914. Please note: Hancock Street Car Park uses
a 'Smart Card' ticketing system. These cards may only be used at Hancock Street Car Park. In
addition to being able to pay for parking at pay stations located in the lift lobbies prior to exit, if you
park within Hancock Street Car Park and wish to use a credit card, you may pay for parking at the
exit stations as you leave the car park.
Bicycle Parking
 A secured bicycle storage area is available for Mater staff and students working on Mater
campus. Please contact Mater Security for more information. Storage of bicycles on campus is at
the risk of the bicycle owner.

EXPECTATION OF STUDENTS
Behaviour
From early in your program you will be entering the busy professional world of a teaching hospital. At each
teaching hospital you will learn and develop the necessary skills to help you communicate with and
examine sick and injured people. These skills will be vitally important throughout your working life as a
doctor. Unless these skills are soundly based and carefully learnt, there will be later problems of diagnosis
and treatment which could result in your patients suffering unnecessarily.
In the wards you will learn the professional code of behaviour between medical, paramedical and nursing
staff. You should act in a fashion that does not interfere with the efficient performance of work by the
staff of the hospital.
Confidentiality
Over 2,300 years ago Hippocrates insisted that doctors ''keep secret anything learned as the outcome of a
professional relationship with a patient which should not be divulged''. This was firmly restated in the
World Medical Association's Declaration of Geneva (1949): ''A doctor owes to his patient absolute secrecy
on all which has been confided to him or which he knows because of the confidence entrusted to him''.
Patients will not share confidences unless they are certain confidentiality of this information is assured. As
the Law Reform Commission (1980) stated, it is for each individual to decide ''in relation to those details of
his private life he has freely made known to another, whether they may be made known to third parties, in
which circumstances and to whom''.
As clinical students you are now privy to exactly the same confidential information as doctors and hence
are subject to exactly the same constraints as stated so clearly in the ethic above.
NEVER discuss patients by name with anyone not entitled to this information.
NEVER discuss a patient's problem within the hearing of the patient. Statements are often misheard or
misconstrued and can lead to considerable mental anguish. The truth, particularly if of grave import, can
be much more upsetting if carelessly revealed. Remember also that other patients are only too willing to
pass on what they think they may have heard.
Similarly, avoid discussing patients with colleagues in Hospital lifts or other confined places where
conversations may be overheard. Even if the patient's name is not mentioned, other people in the lift or
within ear-shot may relate the comments to the problems of their own relatives or friends. The hospital

records are confidential documents, and as such are the property of the Hospital and may not be copied in
any way. Access to these records is a privilege granted to you by the hospital administration - do not abuse
this privilege.
NEVER permit a patient, his relatives or friends to see the hospital records. Any release of the information
in these records is the prerogative of the doctor who is responsible for the overall care of the patient.
NEVER discuss patients on Social Electronic Media.
You could be sued by the patient for breaches of confidentiality, and indeed some proven breaches could
lead the School of Medicine to have grave doubts as to your fitness to continue the Program.
DO NOT turn on your mobile phones or iPads whilst in clinics, theatres or on ward rounds.
Attendance at Classes
Students’ clinical activities and involvement with patients, as directed by their tutors, is an essential
component of the rotation’s work, as is attendance at tutorials and seminars relating to these patients.
Inability to attend programmed activities should be explained to the appropriate tutor. The course
demands a full time commitment and students must ensure that any employment undertaken will not
interfere with the demands of the course.
Leave of Absence
100% attendance is expected. All absences must be explained and approved. Any period of absence must
be made up prior to the end of the rotation.
Students are required to apply for leave using the appropriate form when absent from Clinical Placement
Days (Planned Leave and Sick/Exceptional Circumstances Leave) see https://my.som.uq.edu.au/mc/mbbsguide/program-information/information-for-phase-2/policies-and-forms.aspx.
Where a student is absent on Sick/Exceptional Circumstances Leave for more than two (2) consecutive
days, they must provide a medical certificate (for illness) and appropriate supporting documentation
and/or statutory declaration.
When a student is absent from any clinical placement day in a rotation due to illness or exceptional
circumstances they must notify the School of Medicine, via email or otherwise in writing no later than 24
hours after the event. Sick/Exceptional circumstances leave must be applied for within five (5) business
days of the last day of leave.
A student will only be granted a maximum of ten (10) days of Sick/Exceptional Circumstances Leave
circumstances leave per calendar year of enrolment.
Applications for Planned Leave must be submitted at least four (4) weeks prior to the first day of Planned
Leave. Applications for Planned Leave must be accompanied by a personal statement outlining the reason
for the leave together with supporting documentation. Applications submitted within four (4) weeks of
the first day of Planned Leave must include a personal statement and documentation explaining why the
application could not be submitted on time. Approval will be on a case-by-case basis by the School of
Medicine. A student will only be granted a maximum of ten (10) days of Planned Leave per calendar year
of enrolment. No more than five (5) days Planned Leave will be approved per clinical rotation. Planned
Leave will not be approved during orientation or examination weeks.

Dress Code
Medical students are to project a professional image, and to wear clean, neat and modest clothing, and
adequate footwear. Shoes with a comfortable heel height and either fully closed or sandal style with a
heel strap must be worn. Thongs are not acceptable. Ensure that long hair is firmly secured when bending
over to examine patients. It is potentially hazardous to wear clothes or pieces of jewellery which may
become caught in bedrails and hospital equipment. Jeans are unacceptable.
Mater ID Card and University of Queensland ID card must be worn at all times in the hospital and must
be visible AT ALL TIMES. Failure to do so may prevent access to Mater facilities and possible removal.
For your Mater Hospital ID badge you should go to the Security Office, Ground Floor, Whitty Building Office Hours: 7:30 am – 3:30 pm, Phone: 3163 8790. At the end of your rotation you should return your
Mater Hospital ID to Security (just slip it in the slot in the door).
BASIC RULES





Mobile Phones must not be switched on within the hospital and must not be activated to take
photographs.
No Smoking in the hospital and only in designated smoking area on hospital grounds.
No Alcohol.
No Excessive Noise, avoid loud talking and laughing in the ward.
Do not congregate in the passageways or other areas where ward traffic may be obstructed.
