Performance Task Scenario IDEA Vocabulary Strategy
Goal:

Your goal is to use a graphic organizer to assist in your ability to acquire, use,
and retain vocabulary terms related to the causes, important events, and
effects of the War of 1812 using the IDEA vocabulary strategy.
Task 1:
1. Read pages 296-300.
2. Record the following words under the ‘Word’ column in the chart that appears
in your passage.
 frigate
 privateer
 Treaty of Ghent
3. Say the words to your partner.
4. Use a dictionary, glossary, or online support to write the pronunciation of the
words under the ‘Describe’ column in the chart.
5. Say the words again to your partner using the appropriate pronunciation.
6. Read the definition of the words to your partner.
7. Below the pronunciation in the ‘Describe’ box, write a brief description in your
own words.
8. Turn and talk to your partner and discuss one way to elaborate on the word.
9. List the synonyms, antonyms, examples, non-examples, or characteristics
under ‘Elaborate.’
10. Make a personal connection with the word by relating it to something you
know, have read, or have seen and record a relevant sentence under ‘Associate.’
11. Draw a picture or symbol to help you remember the word under ‘Illustrate.’
You may use colored pencils to assist your non-linguistic representation of the
word.
12. Share your non-linguistic representations with your partner.
Task 2:
Goal:

Your goal is to help future 8th grade social studies students understand the
causes, important events, and effects of the War of 1812.
Role:

You are a cartoonist selected to work on a project for a national historical
cartoon web design company.
Audience:

Limited English speaking 8th grade history students.
Situation:

You have been asked to create a non-linguistic representation so that limited
English speaking students will understand the causes, important events, and
effects of the War of 1812.
Product Performance and Purpose:

Research the War of 1812 by reading pages 296-300 and identify the text
structure used. Then, prepare a graphic organizer to arrange the causes,
important events, and effects of the War of 1812. Next, prepare a cartoon
which demonstrates the causes, important events, and effects of the War of
1812. Finally, write a script which explains each panel of your cartoon which
will be read and recorded at another time. Use each of the following words in
your script; frigate, privateer, and Treaty of Ghent.
Standards and Criteria for Success:

Your completed cartoon needs to include ….
o A minimum of six cartoon panels
o Clear visuals which accurately reflect the causes, important events, and
effects of the War of 1812.
o A script which contains each of the three vocabulary words you will read
as the audience views each panel of the cartoon.
Task 3:
Respond to the following questions in your process journal:
a. What is the key idea of using the IDEA strategy?
b. In what ways does the IDEA strategy benefit your struggling learners,
ELLs, GT, and general education students?
c. How will can students use the IDEA strategy to review key words?
