COURSE DESCRIPTION: Credit: 3 semester hours. The nature and functions of retail outlets in the marketing structure are studied. Managerial policies and methods of providing goods and services to the ultimate consumer are also studied. EDUCATIONAL O BJECTIVES: 1. Mastery of the fundamental concepts and theories of related to retail management 2. Students will be knowledgeable of the processes that affect consumer-purchasing behavior. 3. Improved proficiency in communicating theoretical ideas. Method of Instruction: The course will be a combination of lectures, discussions, and presentations. All students are encouraged to actively participate in class discussions by asking and answering questions, and by offering ideas and suggestions. The quality and quantity of the student's participation will be counted subjectively in the student's final course grade. GRADING POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: Course Requirements: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Attendance - Students are required to attend all classes and to be on time. Exams - There will be three regulars exams and combination fourth and final exam. The forth examination will be given during the specified final exam period. Project – Students are to form teams (2 members only) to develop a research paper based on topics agreed on between team and instructor. Students are required to use at least 10 journal articles. The paper should be a minimum of 10 double spaced pages excluding title and reference pages. Also include a table, which briefly summarizes the content of each article. Teams should notify instructor of topics selected. We want to minimize 2 or more teams using the same exact topic. So please email your team topic as soon as possible for approval. Suggested topics will be posted by 9/20/04. Teams with more than 2 members or only 1 member will be penalized 20 points unless approved by the instructor. Students will be given 3 assignments. These are due on the dates indicated on the syllabus or when notified by professor. The only justifications for missing an exam are reasons clearly beyond the control of the student. In those rare cases, a business-like request should made to be excused by providing a typed, dated, and signed memo from the student to the instructor explaining reason for the missing the exam. Copies of supporting documents must be attached and phone numbers of witnesses or other concerned persons must be provided. The instructor must be able to independently confirm that the absence was beyond the control of the student. Excuse memorandums must be submitted by the second-class period after return from an absence. If the excuse is accepted, the instructor will provide a 10-question essay make up exam for the student to take during the instructor’s office hours. Typed Homework All homework assignments are to be prepared as most business documents are prepared, using a typewriter or computer. Handwritten homework will not be accepted. Additional assignments or changes in the syllabus may be made in class. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of these changes. POLICIES ON ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Course credit, degrees and certificates are to be earned by students and may not be obtained through acts of dishonesty. Disciplinary action will be taken against any student who alone or with others engages in any act of academic fraud or deceit. Any instance of academic dishonesty should be reported to the appropriate University officials. Offenses include: acquiring information, providing information, plagiarism and dual submissions, conspiracy, fabrication of information, misrepresentations, alterations of documents, forgery, et cetera.
