For the taxation year 2013 there are credits or deduction available to help
offset the cost of higher education. They are the American Opportunity
Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit. A tuition and fees deduction may be
beneficial if you cannot use the credit because your income is too high.
In order to claim the tax credit/deduction, a student must attend an eligible
institution of higher education. US institutions provide their students with
Form 1098 – T verifying the tuition and other required information. The
Internal Revenue Services has not developed a form for foreign institutions.
The T2202A is generally an acceptable substitute that you/your
parent(s)/spouse can use to claim the tax credit benefit. You should keep
this letter and the Canadian T2202A together for future reference.
You may print your T2202A—2013 Tuition and Education amount
Certificate from Student Web Service starting February 21, 2014
