E. FINANCIAL AID, EMPLOYEE REIMBURSEMENT AND U OF D MERCY

TUITION REMISSION

Financial Aid

Financial Aid includes scholarships, assistantships, grants, loans and work study. This section includes information for U.S. students only. Canadian or other international students should consult the Financial Aid Office directly about aid opportunities and policies.

CANADIAN and INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS PLEASE NOTE: At this printing, the

5

CanHELP and ISLP loan programs are currently suspended, due to the bankruptcy of the

TERI agency which processed the loans. Also, the Comprehensive Access Loan through the

Access Group is now through Campus Door and requires a U.S. co-signer. The Financial

Aid Office is monitoring these situations and will send blanket e-mails to all students if programs are reinstated. In the meantime, students are advised to seek loans or lines of credit from their home government and/or local banking institutions. Students are also advised to use the free scholarships searches available on the internet, such as www.fastweb.com and www.fastweb.ca (for Canadian students), as well as www.edupass.org. All students are advised to check the scholarship bulletin board outside the financial aid office and to watch for scholarship announcements in their UDM e-mailbox.

Payment Due Information

Payment for classes is due in full no later than the final registration date. Students who are unable to make payment in full must make a payment plan with Tuition Management

Systems (TMS) by final registration (See Section III. B. of this Manual regarding TMS).

NOTE: TMS requires a $44/semester or $60/year fee, payable when making your payment plan. A late fee of $25, if paid after the first of each month, will be charged by TMS.

Students registering, making payment, or making a payment plan through TMS after the posted final registration date will be charged a $50 late registration fee.

Financial Aid Application Information

Any student who has a scholarship or needs financial assistance in order to pay tuition and fees is encouraged to apply for financial aid as early as possible. April 1, 2008 was the priority application date for applying for aid for 2008-09. Applicants applying after that date are processed in the order of completion of their files, and their aid may or may not be available at the time of final registration. Late financial aid applicants will be responsible for any late fees charged due to late receipt of financial aid. All scholarship recipients must complete a UDM Scholarship and Financial Aid Application so that their scholarship(s) can be awarded for the proper number of credit hours.

Students desiring aid other than an institutional scholarship must complete both a UDM

Scholarship and Financial Aid Application and a Free Application for Federal Student Aid

(FAFSA). The student must submit the FAFSA to the federal processor, either by mail or on line, and have this form electronically transmitted to the Financial Aid Office by listing the

Law School’s Title IV institution code (E00392) on the FAFSA application. (Students are reminded that they must complete all the FAFSA worksheets, paying special attention to the last line on worksheet B, where any money received by the student or paid on the student’s behalf by any other person or organization must be reported.) Any verification, tax, asset and other forms requested by the Financial Aid Office or demanded by the SAR (the FAFSA output document) are to be submitted directly to the Financial Aid Office. Students desiring alternative loans must complete the alternative loan application of their choice, and submit it to the lender or the financial aid office, as directed on the application.

6

Award Letters ( NEW INFORMATION!)

Students who have complete financial aid applications and who qualify for financial aid are sent two copies of their award letter in the mail. The award letter lists the types and amounts of aid awarded.

For aid to be processed, a student must sign and return one copy of the award letter. Firsttime Stafford Loan borrowers must choose a lender by indicating the name of the lender on the back of the award letter. Students accepting a Graduate PLUS loan must complete the last section on the back of the award letter, with a signature specifically for the Graduate

PLUS loan. First-time Graduate PLUS loan borrowers must complete a paper Graduate

PLUS loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) and submit it to the Financial Aid Office for processing.

Since April of 2008, several of the lenders who were commonly used by UDM students have suspended participation in federal and/or alternative loan programs. Many lenders have been severely affected by problems in the financial markets, combined with a doubling of the fees charged by the federal government to originate federal loans. Thus, some students who have already had federal Stafford or Graduate PLUS loans may need to select a new lender for

2008-09. At the time of this printing, Comerica and MHESLA have suspended participation in the federal loan programs. In addition, LaSalle Bank has been purchased by Bank of

America and, while it is participating in the federal loan programs, it has terminated its relationship with the Michigan Guaranty Agency using Nelnet as a servicer.

Students whose lenders have suspending participation in the federal programs or changed guarantors and servicers will need to indicate a new lender name and lender code on their award letter. In addition, these students will need to complete new Master Promissory Notes for their Stafford and/or Graduate PLUS loans. Also, any student who needed an Endorser

(co-signer) to secure a Graduate PLUS loan will need a new Grad PLUS MPN, and if the student still needs a co-signer, a new Endorser application each time the student initiates a new Graduate PLUS loan application. Stafford loans MPNs are usually available on the lender’s website after the loan has been transmitted by the University to the lender. The lender sends each student a notice of how to complete the Stafford loan MPN. Graduate

PLUS loan MPNs and Endorser applications are available from the Financial Aid Office upon request.

All financial aid recipients must refer to the UDM Financial Aid website

(www.udmercy.edu/apply/financial_aid) for detailed information on financial aid programs, more information on award letters and federal and institutional policies. It is extremely important that all students read and understand the Federal Satisfactory Academic Progress

Policy and the Title IV Refund Policy. The website documentation replaces the hard-copy award letter booklets which used to be mailed with the original award letter.

7

Assessment Forms

Students whose financial aid materials for 2008-09 are complete, but who have not received an award letter by final registration, may request at final registration an assessment of the portion of the full payment expected to be made by financial aid. Students who receive an assessment of less than full tuition must be prepared to pay the difference between their charges and the expected aid at final registration. Students who are unable to make full payment of any charges not covered by financial aid will need to make payment arrangements with TMS. Receipt of an assessment form does not guarantee registration or waive any late/deferred fees.

Student Loans

Students receiving a federal student loan for the first time at UDM must complete an

Entrance Interview before any federal student loan funds may be credited to their account.

Students may complete an on-line Stafford Loan entrance interview at www.mapping-yourfuture.org

. Most student loans are disbursed via electronic fund transfer (EFT) from the lender to the University. However, some lenders still disburse via paper check. (Students whose loans are disbursed via paper check must appear in person to endorse their check at final registration.) If the financial aid award has been made and the lender has not made the

EFT transmission or paper check available by final registration, the student may obtain an assessment form for the amount of the expected disbursement. Students will then be notified when their disbursement arrives. It is the responsibility of the student to complete the entrance interview and to endorse paper checks in a timely fashion. Late payment fees incurred due to delayed completion of the entrance interview or endorsement of checks will not be removed.

Work-Study and Other On-Campus Student Employment

Students who receive a work-study award, or who wish to work on the non work-study program may obtain a Student Employment Authorization at or after final registration if they have the proper materials to complete the I-9 form. These documents include a U.S.

Passport, or a combination of a Driver's License, State or Military ID AND an original social security card or birth certificate, among others. Non-work study students who have not completed a FAFSA must supply a copy of their Social Security Card. International students must be full time students with documentation in order to work on campus.

Refunds

Funds paid by the student or by a financial aid program in excess of the tuition and fee charges incurred by the student will be refunded to the student by way of an institutional check if the student is registered for the number of credit hours for which she/he applied for aid and all other information in the financial aid file is correct. Refunds of excess financial aid monies that have arrived by final registration date are made at the end of the second week of classes, as long as the student is registered for the number or credit hours for which s/he

8

was awarded (based upon the number listed on the UDM Scholarship and Financial Aid

Application); that the student’s living arrangements have not changed; and that the student is not receiving any outside assistance not noted on the UDM Scholarship and Financial Aid

Application. Students should be financially prepared to meet, at minimum , their cost of books, supplies and living expenses incurred during the first 2-3 weeks of the semester.

Students whose financial aid arrives after final registration must allow 2 weeks thereafter for a refund. Refunds may be delayed, reduced, or eliminated if the student is not enrolled for the number of credits for which she/he applied for aid; if s/he changes living arrangements; if s/he fails to complete the entrance interview; if the loan company determines that the student’s credit is not acceptable; if s/he has not completed and returned any required promissory note(s) to the lender(s); or if the student receives outside aid not noted on the

UDM Scholarship and Financial Aid Application. Students must keep their address up to date on WebLink, as refund checks are mailed to students.

Recalculation of Aid

The award letter lists the hour range of credits per term for which aid will be provided.

Students who register or plan to register for a number of credit hours outside the hour range must notify the financial aid office via a Request for Re-evaluation form (included in the original award letter packet and also available on-line at www.law.udmercy.edu). This should be done as soon as they become aware of the change, preferably before final registration.

Students who register for a different number of credit hours than for which they applied for aid; who receive aid or payments on their behalf from outside sources; or whose residency status changes must have their financial aid package re-evaluated prior to receiving any refund. This is also true for any student who drops classes.

Upon recalculation of aid, the student will be sent a revised award letter showing any changes required to be made. Should any refund be due to the student, it will be made within

2 weeks of the revised award letter.

Withdrawals (VERY IMPORTANT!!)

STUDENTS WHO RECEIVE FEDERAL STUDENT AID AND WHO COMPLETELY

WITHDRAW FROM CLASSES PRIOR TO COMPLETING 60% OF THE SEMESTER

WILL HAVE THEIR FEDERAL AID PRORATED ACCORDINGLY. STUDENTS MUST

COMPLETE AT LEAST 60% OF THE SEMESTER TO EARN A FULL SEMESTER'S

WORTH OF FEDERAL AID. WITHDRAWAL PRIOR TO THE 60% POINT OF THE

TERM (NOVEMBER 2, 2008 FOR TERM I, 2008-09) WILL RESULT IN PRORATION

OF FINANCIAL AID, LEAVING THE STUDENT WITH A DEBT TO THE SCHOOL.

COPIES OF THE INSTITUTIONAL AND FEDERAL REFUND POLICIES ARE

AVAILABLE FROM THE FINANCIAL AID OFFICE AND ARE MAILED TO EACH

STUDENT IN THE INFORMATION BOOKLET THAT ACCOMPANIES THE

9

ORIGINAL AWARD LETTER.

Student Services and Registrar's Office, Room 133 by SEPTEMBER 26, 2008. The graduation fee for the 2008-2009 academic year is $135.00. The graduation fee will be charged to each senior's UDM tuition account as the Application forms are processed by the

C. EXAMINATION NUMBERS

For the purpose of anonymous grading, all students are assigned exam numbers during the second week of EACH TERM on each student’s schedule screen in UDM

WebLink at www.udmercy.edu/WebLink/. It is the SOLE responsibility of each student to access his/her own exam number in WebLink each Term. These assigned numbers are to be placed at the top of each page of a student's exam in lieu of his/her name. A student who misplaces or forgets his/her number and is unable to access

WebLink needs to request a re-issue of his/her exam number from the Office of

Student Services and Registrar. Requests take 48 hours to process. Students who fail to use their assigned exam number on a quiz, paper, midterm or final exam in any course risks earning a grade of 0.0 in that course .

D. OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS

"Request for Transcript" forms are located on the table next to Room 133. Completed forms can be submitted to the Law School Student Services and Registrar's Office (Room 133). The fee is $5.00 per transcript. All transcript requests are sent to the University Registrar's Office at main campus for processing. Therefore, the turn-around time for an official transcript is 8-

10 working days. To expedite this process, students may also contact the University

Registrar's Office directly (313 993-3313). (See § II., I. of this Manual for eligibility.)

E. EMPLOYMENT TUITION REIMBURSEMENT FORMS

Tuition Reimbursement forms are located on the table next to Room 133. Completed forms should be submitted to the Law School Student Services and Registrar's Office prior to the distribution of each term's report cards.

F. LOAN DEFERMENT FORMS

Students who are deferring their student loan payments while in law school should obtain a loan deferment form from their lending institution or undergraduate school, fill out the lendee portion of the form, and submit same to the LAW SCHOOL STUDENTS SERVICES

AND REGISTRAR'S OFFICE, ROOM 133, FOR CERTIFICATION. Most lenders require this procedure be done every semester a student is enrolled.

G. IMMIGRATION INFORMATION FOR CANADIAN STUDENTS
