Consumer Lifestyles - Indonesia 26 Apr 2007 19.3 Cable and Satellite Television Cable TV is available in Indonesia primarily through Kabelvision and other smaller companies. At present, Kabelvision operates only in Jakarta, and primarily in middle- and upper-class residential areas. As coverage expands, however, more people will be able to enjoy the comprehensive range of programmes offered by the company. The growth of cable TV will nevertheless remain limited by several factors: first, the subscription fee is too high for the majority of people; second, the programmes are mostly in English, with no subtitles; third, most Indonesians still prefer to spend their leisure time socialising, rather than watching television, so their viewing time is rather limited. For many who live outside the cable TV coverage area, there is the option of subscribing to a satellite TV operator, but again the fee is too high for most people, at approximately Rp150,000 per month. Cable TV is also available in Surabaya. Two firms offer cable TV and Broadband connections at major hotels in Bali. Mega TV was the first pay TV channel in Malaysia, launched in 1995, but folded due to operational problems. Astro, launched after Mega TV, uses satellite technology to offer nationwide coverage. Astro offers affordable rates for all income levels depending on what channels are subscribed. The installation fee is typically RM199 for the satellite dish and decoder. Astro currently broadcasts over 40 TV channels and 16 radio channels to more than 1.6 million subscribers. MiTV is the latest development in the satellite TV market after many failures. MiTV uses the satellite and internet and is a prepaid television system. The response for this service has yet to be determined as it is fairly new.
