Course: Art Appreciation (ARTA 1030)
Module Title: On the Border Line between Mexico and the United States
Module Description:
This module will help students in art appreciation gain knowledge and
understanding about the extent to which cultures within countries affect the artistic expression of its
citizens. Emphasis will be placed the work of Frida Kahlo whose painting, Self Portrait On the Border
Line between Mexico and the United States, is an interpretation of cultural differences between the two
countries. Students should develop greater understanding of visual symbols and how they can be used to
identify different cultures. Students will prepare a poster or digital image of a collection of visual symbols
specific to Mexican culture. The purpose of this module is to increase knowledge, comprehension, and
application of artistic expression specific to Mexico.
Module Objectives:
Objective 1: Students in internationalized classes will develop greater knowledge of cultures other than
their own and the impact of diverse cultural perspectives on world events. 

SLOs (Knowledge)

1a. Students will increase their knowledge of cultures in the world around them, in
particular of Mexican culture through the study of the work of Frida Kahlo.
Objective 2: Students in internationalized classes will acquire increased understanding of the international
aspects of the respective subject area/course discipline. 

SLOs (Comprehension)

2a. Students will understand how international cultural diversity shapes the foundational
elements, theory, research, and practice of various academic disciplines and related
occupations/professions, including artistic expression through the study of Mexican art.
Objective 3: Students in internationalized classes will demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the
interdependency and consequences of international events and issues.

SLOs (Application)

3a. Students will articulate the perspectives of other cultures and nations when analyzing
world events, presenting how the cultural differences including religion, ethnicity, and
industrialization of the United States and Mexico affects art through the study of one
Mexican artist’s personal interpretation. 
Methodology:
This module, On the Border Line between Mexico and the United States, will be infused into
classroom lessons throughout the 15 week semester.
Assignments:
Working individually, students will prepare and submit a poster or digital collage highlighting
different cultural symbols of Mexico. Required Content Topics:
During the semester, lectures will include:

The biography of Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera
·
Presentation of the paintings of these artists
·
Explanation of the historical context of the work
·
Discussion of the importance of visual iconography in works of art
Evaluations:
Students will be graded on the poster/digital collage according to a rubric provided in advance to
the students. The project will be at least 5% of the students grade for the course.
Effectiveness standard or grading weight: 70% of students will be expected to meet the standards
as listed on the Rubric - a score of 3 or 4.
