Elements of a Sonnet http://mrreiff.pbworks.com/Elements-of-a-Sonnet (#48) Why do we read Shakespeare? The themes of his plays are timeless. Romeo and Juliet: even though Prologue tells us everything that’s going to happen, Shakespeare does an amazing job of drawing in the audience (much like Titanic; I mean, the boat sinks. We know this. Why watch for three hours?) Seminal (influential) people (suggestions from students) Reading poetry: stop at punctuation (not always at end of line) Rhymes Iambic pentameter: Rhyme scheme Shakespearean sonnet is always: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG Sight rhymes “Heat” and “sweat” do not rhyme, but they look like they might. Slant rhymes “Girl” and “world” do not rhyme, but they sound as though they might, as they share the “url” sound. Before reading a poem, we need to label it: What is the rhyme scheme? Label it. Teacher reads poem. Students listen for pleasure while keeping eyes and ears open for words with which they are not familiar. Vocabulary Next, go through the poem and identify vocabulary words with which you are not familiar Who is the speaker of the poem? Not “the author” Describe the person. Is it a man or a woman (sex of the author)? To whom or what is the author speaking or referring? Explanation should be only one sentence What is the topic of the poem? What the poem is LITERALLY about Do not interpret (at this point) You should have a one-sentence explanation for each of the three quatrains, for a total of three sentences What is the theme (or message) of the poem? Message can be found in the couplet (the last two lines) Explanation is one SHORT sentence: think BUMPER STICKER LENGTH (Nike’s campaign is “Just Do It,” not “Just Do It Because You’ve Been Sitting On The Couch Eating Twinkies For Way Too Long, Fatty!”) Breakfast with the [Burger] King https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4_5qoy4oaQ Message is usually something “big picture." In other words, when you develop a theme for a poem, it should be one that is applicable to things outside the poem. Examples: War is hell Only love can break your heart 5.
