Botany Lab 11 – Gymnosperms
(Use Exercise 27 in your Lab book)
All of the below divisions are gymnosperms
Division Coniferophya (Pinophyta) – Conifers (Pine, fir, spruce, hemlock, redwood, cedar,
Division Ginkgophyta – the ginkgo tree
cypress, yew)
Division Cycadophyta – Cycads
Division Gnetophyta – Gnetum, Welwitchsia, Ephedra
GYMNOSPERMS – Gymnosperms have naked seeds different than angiosperms which have covered
seeds.
– Like angiosperms, gymnosperms have vascular tissues and has a sporic life cycle
(alternating sporophyte and gametophyte bodies).

Do Activity 2. Skip first paragraph and the part about making a slide. You will only be using prepared
slides for this section. Use these Slides “Pinus Staminate Cone L.S.” or “Pinus Staminate Cone”
Do Activity 3 – Use these Slides “ Pinus Ovulate Cone” Pinus Ovule, Mature Archegonium L.S.”
Use Branch As Well.
Skip Activity 4
Do Activity 5 with the cones. Be very careful with the large cone.
Draw pictures of each represented cone.

Activity 7 – Investigate the Slides and draw pictures of one of the following slides.

Activity 8 – Investigate specimens and draw and write what the specimen is.
Activity 9 – Determine the density of each of the following pieces of wood.
You can use a scale and beaker. Density = mass / volume. Use the following units: g/ml
