Introduction.

Congratulations on your purchase of MobilEyes.

With MobilEyes, you'll experience unmatched versatility in both Low

Vision and Blindness Technology.

This Manual and Startup Guide is intended for use by technically oriented dealers, rehabilitation professionals, and end users. It contains technical information on the MobilEyes Product and its operation, as well as, information on how to perform specific tasks, if the user desires.

Note: Guerilla Technologies Incorporated recommends that your

MobilEyes device be handled with care. Electronic devices are not shockproof and great effort should be taken to ensure your

MobilEyes device is not dropped or otherwise hit against any hard objects.

Items Packed with MobilEyes.

If you have purchased a basic MobilEyes device, the package would include one MobilEyes unit, one Power Adapter, one Canon

Camera, two Leather Cases, (one each for the MobilEyes unit and one for the camera), one USB 512MB Flash Drive, one Carrying

Pouch, one Stand Frame and four Stand Legs.

The Professional MobilEyes device would include all of the above plus one External CDRW/DVD Drive, one Bluetooth Headset, one

Canon Flatbed Scanner, and one Hard-shell Travel Case.

To Set Up MobilEyes.

Step 1: Charging your device .

1. Although your MobilEyes Device was shipped fully charged, we recommend that you charge it once you receive the device to enjoy the maximum amount of time available when you decide to go traveling where no power outlet is present. When a power outlet is present, it would be best to use your device and charge it at the same time. This will keep MobilEyes fully charged and in the best battery level condition whenever you’re ready to go.

Page 2.

Step 2: Orientation.

In this entire manual, all references are made from the standpoint of holding MobilEyes with its 7” screen facing the user. MobilEyes is correctly oriented when the long edge that has two straps from the leather case is facing toward the ceiling.

Controls Layout Overview.

The controls are laid out as follows;

On the left side of the front face of the unit, approximately two inches from the top, there is one large button with a slightly rough surface. This button is actually the top of a joystick and is called the

Navigation Control joystick.

- Pushing this joystick in any direction requires only slight pressure and letting go of the joystick will allow it to return to its default position.

- Pushing it from its default position toward the left is equivalent to pressing the left arrow key on a standard keyboard.

- Pushing it from its default position toward the right is equivalent to pressing the right arrow key on a standard keyboard.

- Pushing it from its default position down is equivalent to pressing the down arrow key on a standard keyboard.

- Pushing it from its default position up is equivalent to pressing the up arrow key on a standard keyboard.

Below the Navigation Control Joystick is a small button used for changing screen resolution for low vision users. This button is disabled for all MobilEyes basic users.

On the right side of the front face of the unit [directly across from the

Navigation Control Joystick], there are four smaller buttons with a rubberized surface.

- These buttons are positioned to form a North, South, East,

West pattern and are called Function Buttons.

Page 3.

- Pushing the North, South, East, or West Function Buttons will execute different tasks depending on which feature of

MobilEyes you are using.

- A Quick reference overview of each feature and its corresponding Function Button set can be found in the help file and later on in this manual.

Below the Function Buttons is a small round button with a smooth surface. This is the Enter Button and is equivalent to pressing the

Enter Key on a standard Keyboard or a spacebar when an item is selected.

Below the Enter Button is a small button used for high-level computer settings like those found in the Microsoft Windows Control

Panel. This button is disabled for all MobilEyes basic users.

Along the thin edges of the MobilEyes device are various Ports,

Jacks and Controls.

There are six things to note about the left edge of MobilEyes

Starting from the bottom left corner and moving up the left edge approximately one inch, you will find the lock switch.

Sliding this switch up locks all buttons and controls on

MobilEyes, preventing accidental button engaging. Sliding this switch down unlocks all buttons and controls and makes your MobilEyes ready for use.

Directly in the center of the left edge are the Volume Control

Buttons. The topmost button is used to increase the volume, and the bottommost button is used to decrease the volume.

You can press either of these buttons once to change the volume slightly, or hold either button in to change the volume quickly.

Just above Volume Control is a standard Stereo Headphone

Jack.

Page 4.

Just above the Stereo Headphone Jack and approximately one inch from the top edge of MobilEyes is a USB 2.0 port.

Just above the USB 2.0 port is a Digital Optic Out port. (used only in MobilEyes Pro models).

There are four things to note about the top edge of MobilEyes.

Approximately one inch from the leftmost edge is an RJ45

Network Jack (used only in MobilEyes Pro models). This

Jack is protected by a door that opens by fingernail lifting from the rear side of MobilEyes, which then serves as the hinge for the door.

Approximately two inches from the leftmost edge is a

Compact Flash II slot. The left strap of the leather case covers a portion of this slot. So, inserting a Compact Flash card would require you to unsnap the left strap in order to expose the entire compact flash slot. The left strap can and should be re-fastened once your compact flash card is inserted for the safety of the card and MobilEyes.

Just left of the leather case’s rightmost strap is the power switch. The power switch rests in the center of a shallow slot allowing it to slide to the left AND to the right. To power on

MobilEyes, simply slide the power switch to the right and let go. The switch will spring back to its original position.

(Sliding the power switch to the left activates other functions available only on MobilEyes Pro).

Approximately one inch from the rightmost edge are vents that exhaust warm air generated from the circuitry inside

Mobileyes. Please make sure that these vents are never obstructed. Failing to do so could cause MobilEyes to overheat and may result in damage.

There are three things to note about the right edge of MobilEyes.

Page 5.

Approximately one and a half inches from the topmost edge is a VGA port. This port is protected by a door that opens by fingernail lifting from the rear side of MobilEyes, which then serves as the hinge for the door.

Just below the VGA port is another USB 2.0 port.

Just below USB 2.0 port and approximately one inch from the bottom edge of MobilEyes is the power adapter plug.

There is nothing to note about the bottom edge of MobilEyes.

Turning MobilEyes On and Off

Start MobilEyes by locating the power switch on the top edge, just left of the rightmost strap. Slide the power switch to the right and let go. The Switch will spring back to its original position on it own. You should feel air from the internal cooling fan, come through a vent just to the right of the power switch. This will tell you that MobilEyes is booting-up (or starting). Boot-up takes about one minute. Use this button to power down MobilEyes (to turn off MobilEyes), ONLY IF it does not respond to the Software Shutdown Commands.

During boot-up, (Approximately 90 seconds) MobilEyes will play its audio sound Welcome file. MobilEyes is ready for use when you hear, “MobilEyes Loaded. Press Enter to Begin”.

Page 6.

Learning the Menu System

When MobilEyes is ready, you will hear it say, “MobilEyes loaded.

Press Enter to Begin.”

Pressing the Enter Button will bring the Category Menus to life and the category in first position will say its name.

Using the Navigation Control Joystick, move to the second position by sliding the Joystick slightly to the right, and letting go. If you do not let go of the Joystick and continue to hold it to the right,

MobilEyes will quickly advance to the third position, and all remaining positions until you let go of the joystick. When navigating passed the category in the last position, MobilEyes will simply return to the category in the first position and begin the list again.

The factory installed categories and their positions are as follows:

1 st – Organizer. 2 nd – Multimedia Central. 3 rd – Click and Read. 4 th –

Magnification. 5 th – Games. 6 th – Utilities. 7 th – Exit.

If you navigate passed the category that you wanted to use, you have the option of advancing through the entire revolving list again or sliding the joystick to the left or reverse direction and navigate backward through the list of categories.

Each of the seven standard categories of MobilEyes has several associated feature that can be used. To hear the list of features that fall under a particular category, simply slide the Navigation Control

Joystick down and let go. If you do not let go of the Joystick and continue to hold it down, MobilEyes will quickly advance through all associated features until you let go of the joystick. When navigating passed the feature in the last position, MobilEyes will simply return to the feature in the first position and being the list again.

If you navigate passed the feature that you wanted to use, you have the option of advancing through the entire revolving list again or sliding the joystick up or in the reverse direction and navigate up through the list of features.

Page 7.

Some features will have the phrase, “options exist” announced after their name. This means that there are options as to how that feature can be used. To hear the list of options for a particular feature, slide the joystick to the right after you are sure that you have navigated to the feature you wanted and the existence of options was announced by MobilEyes. You can also press the

Enter Button when you have navigated to a feature with options to hear the options submenu for that feature.

Note: if you slide the Navigation Control Joystick to the left or right of a feature that DOES NOT have options, you will navigate off that feature list and onto the next or previous menu category depending on the direction you navigated.

Once you have heard the first option of a feature, you can listen to other options for that same feature by sliding the Navigation Control

Joystick down and letting go. When navigating passed the option in the last position, MobilEyes will simply return to the option in the first position and begin the list again.

If you navigate passed the option that you wanted to use, you have the choice of advancing through the entire revolving list again or sliding the joystick up or in the reverse direction and navigate up through the list of options.

Only one application can be used at a time.

Camera Operation.

Power ON/OFF.

The TOP of the camera has a leather strip approximately 2 inches wide. It forms a rectangle whose short edge on the left side is straight and also marks the left edge of the camera. The right edge of the leather strip starts straight from the back of the camera but curves as it reaches the front of the camera. This curve indicates where the smooth power button for the camera is located.

When the camera is turned on and off, you will hear connect and disconnect tones from MobilEyes, if MobilEyes is powered on.

Changing Batteries.

Unplug the USB Cable from the right side of the camera. The camera case is connected to the MobilEyes Case by belt clip fasteners. Lift the Camera up off MobilEyes, this may require slight wiggling of the camera.

The camera case has Velcro on the back and snaps on the front that need separation. Remove the camera, replace the batteries found in the bottom side compartment. Replace the camera into the case, the case onto MobilEyes and the USB connector to the camera.

Simply replace the dead batteries, power on your camera, and/or check the cable connection and try again.

The first picture taken each time you turn on your MobilEyes will take slightly longer than all others due to need for MobilEyes to connect to your camera. Once the connection has been made, it will remain established until you turn off your camera or the camera batteries completely drain.

When the connection is made between MobilEyes and your camera, the camera lens will extend. Care should be taken in order to avoid any damage to the extended camera lens. Never set down your

Note: For greater stability and better alignment, your MobilEyes comes with a Portable Camera Stand (some assembly required).

To assemble the stand:

1. Place the rectangular frame such that the short side of the rectangle with the notch in it is to the left and facing up.

2. Find the threaded holes in each of the four corners of the rectangular frame.

3. The two holes closest to you (that is the hole closest to the notch and the hole across from it along the long edge of the rectangle) are called the Away Holes and the other two holes (that is the holes furthest away from you are called the Out Holes)

4. Each hole was drilled from 5 to 10 degrees off from straight vertical. The Away Holes were drilled 5 to 10 degrees AWAY from each other. (The left hole to the left and the right hole to the right…. The Out Holes were drilled 5 to 10 degrees Further OUT from you. (The left and right holes in the same direction).

Page 38.

5. Place the screw end of the one leg in one of the holes, angle it appropriately to the hole and turn the leg clockwise until it is tight.

6. When all four legs have been assembled, flip the stand over onto its legs such that the AWAY LEGS are closest to you. This will allow you to slide an 8 ½ x 11-inch sheet of paper (Landscaped) in between the AWAY LEGS and as deep underneath the Camera Stand to the point where the paper hits the OUT LEGS.

7. Place your MobilEyes on top of the Camera Stand and make all the edges of MobilEyes flush with the edges of the Camera Stand Frame.

You will thus have your paper perfectly aligned with

MobilEyes to capture all the words on that page.

MobilEyes to connect to your camera. Once the connection has been made, it will remain established until you turn off your camera or the camera batteries completely drain.

When the connection is made between MobilEyes and your camera, the camera lens will extend. Care should be taken in order to avoid any damage to the extended camera lens.

Never set down your MobilEyes with the camera facing down.

Note: For greater stability and better alignment, your MobilEyes comes with a Portable Camera Stand (some assembly required).

To assemble the stand:

1 Place the rectangular frame such that the short side of the rectangle with the notch in it is to the left and facing up.

2 Find the threaded holes in each of the four corners of the rectangular frame.

3 The two holes closest to you (that is the hole closest to the notch and the hole across from it along the long edge of the rectangle) are called the Away Holes and the other two holes (that is the holes furthest away from you are called the Out Holes)

4 Each hole was drilled from 5 to 10 degrees off from straight vertical. The Away Holes were drilled 5 to 10 degrees AWAY from each other. (The left hole to the left and the right hole to the right…. The Out Holes were drilled 5 to 10 degrees Further OUT from you. (The left and right holes in the same direction).

5 Place the screw end of the one leg in one of the holes, angle it appropriately to the hole and turn the leg clockwise until it is tight.

6 When all four legs have been assembled, flip the stand over onto its legs such that the AWAY LEGS are closest to you. This will allow you to slide an 8 ½ x 11-inch sheet of paper (Landscaped) in between the AWAY LEGS and as deep underneath the Camera Stand to the point where the paper hits the OUT LEGS.

7 Place your MobilEyes on top of the Camera Stand and make all the edges of MobilEyes flush with the edges of the Camera Stand Frame. You will thus have your paper perfectly aligned with MobilEyes to capture all the words on that page.
