The reflective report explores the concept behind the breaking news flash and how it was initiated and manipulated with the use of some hardware and software tools. It explains the idea behind the concept, the choice of location, the script, the story-board, and the choice of the news channel name. It also explains the work break down structure on how it was implemented. Furthermore, it covers the sequential procedures followed in using the Adobe Premiere Pro CS6, Adobe After Effects CS6 and Adobe Photoshop CS6 in other to achieve a quality audio, video, graphics, text, and some special effects. The report explains the reason behind the choice of the software and hardware tools used. It unveils the difficulties and challenges faced in achieving a quality news flash, and how they were overcome to improve the quality of the video without wasting much time. DESIGN CONCEPT Despite the fact that the news bulletin was fictitious, yet the scene, the script, the cast and the location where it was shot prove its originality. In line with the coursework requirement that the news flash should have a channel name, title, and Logo to make it real and original. JTV was chosen as the channel name, It is an abbreviation for Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation (JCSEE). Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation (JCSEE), is a coalition of major professional association formed in 1975 in America and Canada to help improve the quality of educational evaluation, JCSEE, (1975). It was chosen as the channel name to make it original. The channel name is in line with the title of the news flash “The Expulsion of 19 students from Middleshire University as a result of examination malpractice”. It is based on educational evaluation. The choice of the news bulletin title was made as my own idea to encourage students like me to make their studies a priority and study hard in other to excel and pass their examination, instead of engaging in malpractice. Furthermore, before going into the video shooting proper, a storyboard was drawn as a guide and as a graphic organizer in form of illustrations and images, which were arranged in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing and making adjustments to where there are errors before shooting the video. The storyboard was drawn with pencil on A4 sheets containing all the scenes. There were lots of challenges faced before the required storyboard was drawn, but with the help of my friends and the internet, i was able to insert all the necessary details in the storyboard (storyboardthat.com). Despite the fact that some errors were corrected before the shooting of the video, more informations were still added to the storyboard after the video was shot, such as the lightning, props and the mood of the news caster. Moreover, through the process of making the title real and original, all the scenes were shot in different locations at the Middlesex University campus environment. The first scene was shot in the Middlesex University Lab.(Lab 3.43), due to the lightning arrangement of the lab. Obviously, students make noise in the school environment as a result of studies and moral activities, which is not excepted of a studio. The major reason behind the choice of the location was because of its quietness. The News Caster with the green screen background The first scene entails the part of the news caster, casting the breaking news in the studio. It was filmed with a green screen background behind the news caster, with a Samsung NX 1000 camera, of about 20.3 mega pixel, which was 1 M00485490|ELUYERA OLUWATOSIN JOSEPH well positioned on a tripod stand in the Lab. The camera was actually borrowed from a friend that stays with me in the same hall of residence. He bargained with me to capture his own news bulletin first before releasing the camera. Getting an appointment with the cast was a little challenging and difficult, due to different coursework and projects they were working on. It was finally shot immediately after a lecture in the school premises few weeks ago, however, there were challenges from colleagues who came to the locations to distract the attention of the cast with noise. The challenge was later overcome when the door of the studio was locked, which served as an hindrance for disturbers to come in and distract the attention of the cast. CRITICAL JUSTIFICATION AND EVALUATION OF SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE TOOLS USED HARDWARE TOOLS The Samsung NX1000 Camera, of 20.3 mega pixel was actually chosen due to the fact that it was the only camera available as at that time. As required in the coursework, a high-end camera is required in order to capture a quality video. Fortunately, the camera that was used was a high resolution camera with a very high ISO range which could produce a good and quality video. It also has a good sound and visual clarity which does not necessarily require the use of an external microphone to project the sound. The video files were saved on a 4Gb memory card which was inserted into the camera, after which it was transferred to a high-end Compac laptop. The Compac laptop with a high resolution of 1366x768 pixels, 15.6 inch display, ATI Radeon HD 4200, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M Graphics Adapter, Intel Pentium Processor. The green screen was another major tool that was effectively used during the shooting of the first scene. SOFTWARE TOOLS The major software tools that were used in achieving a good quality news flash were the Adobe Premiere Pro CS6, Adobe After Effects CS6 and Adobe Photoshop CS6. The internet was also a major software tools used in accomplishing this task, because it serves as a major tool for information source in learning and familiarizing more with the Adobe packages used in editing a quality video. THE DESIGN The CS6 Master Collection of the Adobe packages such as the Adobe After Effect CS6 and Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 were used in editing the captured videos, and creating special effects to make it look real. The Adobe CS6 Master Collection has more features than its previous incarnation which makes it unique for editing and designing. However, the captured videos were properly sorted out from the ones that had mistakes, arranged sequentially and stored in a pen-drive. After sorting out the clips, they were all imported into the Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 and properly reviewed to ensure they were of good quality. The Razor tool was used to cut the part that was not necessarily needed in the clip, to ensure the clip follows the proper timing required and drawn on the story-board. The slip tool was also used to cut in between the clips that were not required of standard, after which the Merge and Link option was used to add and join all the clips seamlessly to form a single and quality news flash. This area actually took a lot of my time, as it is the major part of editing in the video. In order not to distort the part of the clips that were needed in the video, the razor tool and slip tool were carefully used and reviewed severally. THE LOGO Channel logo A new layer was created on the Adobe Photoshop CS6 in order to create a television logo for the news flash. A rectangle tool was selected to draw a rectangle on the layer, after the layer was unlocked, and the colour of the layer was changed to whitish-grey. The select-tool was clicked to enable selecting the text tool in order to type the channel name (JTV). However, the text layer was selected and right-clicked, so as to select any effect of choice. From the blending option, the bevel & emboss, color overlay, gradient overlay, pattern overlay, outer glow, and drop shadow effects were selected to make the text reddish, with shadow, and leaving the background pale. The rectangle layer was 1 M00485490|ELUYERA OLUWATOSIN JOSEPH selected and right-clicked in order to add effects to it, the bevel & emboss, stroke, inner glow and pattern overlay were selected to form a dark frame around the text. The Logo was imported to the Adobe CS6 Premiere Pro, and was placed above all the clips. The LIVE Logo To show that the news is happening presently, a live logo was implemented with Adobe Premiere Pro. A new title was created called “Title 3” and the text tool was used to type live. The Adobe Arabic was selected as the Font family, and the Bold Italics was selected as the Font Style. Small cap, Fill, and Sheen options were selected. The Fill option was used to select two different colours (A pale pink and white), in order to give the text a dual-colour effect. Filled Beizer was selected as the graphic type, and the Fill was chosen as solid, to make the text on it attractive and visible to viewers. Inner strokes and shadow were also selected , and the shadow colour was selected to be black. THE STUDIO BACKGROUND The studio background was achieved with Adobe Photoshop tools. A new layer was created, and the rectangle tool was selected to draw a rectangle on the layer. The text tool was used to achieve text on the layer, and different effects were added to each text. A red colour was initially added to the background, so as to match the colour with the graphics on the video, but the targeted design was not achieved, so the red colouration on the background was removed. THE JINGLE The jingle that was used in the news flash intro and outro was actually downloaded, this was done because of my lack of skills in cooking up beats. I could have done better by using some software tools such as Virtual Dj, Cubase, or Nuendo softwares, but THE HEADLINES The headlines was created on Adobe Premiere pro CS6. A new title was selected, and the arc tool was used to draw the arc shape. The Font Family of the text was set as Adobe Garamond Pro, and the font style was bold. However, the aspect effect was reduced to 52.9%, tracking to 8.0, slant to 23.0. Small caps was selected and increased to 100%. The fill, texture, and Inner strokes box were checked, and the colour opacity was increased to 100%. To create a background on which the headlines text will be placed, a rectangle was drawn, and a pale pink colour was selected. The fill, sheen, Texture, and shadow boxes were checked to add special effects to the rectangle. The name of the news caster on the first scene was achieved on the Adobe Premiere Pro CS6. A still title type was created with the following properties; Prestige Elite Std font family, bold font size which was reduced to 67.9. Moreover, the green screen background was removed with the use of the Chroma-Key, the Four-point Garbage Matte tool was used to position and stabilize the background in the first scene, just to maintain a good colour balance, after which the green screen background was removed and replaced with the original background created in Photoshop. This was done to make it real and original as required in the coursework. The Motion tool was selected and used to position the image of the news caster in the centre of the video, The ending part of the news flash consist of copyright and scrolling text which include the cast and crew that featured in the news flash . This task was achieved with the use of the scrolling marquee, default crawl and default roll options in the Adobe Premiere Pro. However, the sound intro was the last thing that was done. It was not an easy task, and achieving within a short period of time given was very challenging, so i had to download an intro and make the effective use of it wisely. Despite the hard work and strife to cook up a sound for the intro, it was not achieved. Right from the intro to the outro, there was proper keeping of tracks and timing of all the clips so as not to confuse the viewers. All clips were attached and joined to each other to form a complete news flash with the title, “The Expulsion Of 19 Students From Middleshire University Due To Examination Malpractice”. BLOG After the final storyboard was drawn and properly checked, it was uploaded to my blog. The rendered and exported video, with the reflective report (docx. and PDF), were also uploaded to my blog, which is available from http://elubobo.wordpress.com/, on Thursday 29th May, 2014. It was uploaded earlier, a day before the submission deadline to avoid risk of all kinds such as internet failure, e.t.c. 1 M00485490|ELUYERA OLUWATOSIN JOSEPH CONCLUSION In conclusion, the news flash has been achieved with the manipulation of many tools in the Adobe CS6 Master collection generally. By so doing, it has added value to my ability in manipulating those tools. However, i have learnt a lot from this project such as removing the green screen and replacing it a designed and well- manipulated background,. I have also learnt on how to use some tools on the Adobe After Effect during the course of creating my news flash intro, though i could not arrive at a very attractive intro.
