Select a GC (two people per GC)
Verify and record the carrier gas, the injection/detector temperature, column oven
temperature, current, the flow rate, polarity, attenuation, and which liquid phase
(the type of column) you used to get this separation. Record neatly and clearly in
your Data section.
Make sure the detector and the integrator are on.
Determine the column (port) into which you are to inject your sample.
Check the syringe to be sure the plunger moves easily. (If not, clean it with
acetone at the sink.)
Take up an amount of your sample in the syringe. Make sure there are no bubbles
or air space.
Reduce the volume to ~0.5 to 1.0 microliter. Read the syringe carefully!
Inject the sample quickly and smoothly through the septum.
Immediately hit the “start” button.
When you determine that the run is complete, push the stop button on the
integrator and wait.
Label that data with the type of distillation, the vial # from your distillation, and
your name. Print the chromatogram.
Be sure you can determine both the theoretical plates and the resolution from your
collected data.
Run the remaining samples in the same way.
Be sure to clean the syringe for the next lab.
Attach the integrator printouts to your notebook using either tape or glue (no
staples or paperclips, please).
