Scientific and Professional Liaison Council Conference Call Date: Monday, June 16, 2014 Time: 2:30 pm ET, 1:30 pm CT, 12:30 pm MT and 11:30 am PT In Attendance Sherri Sheinfeld Gorin, PhD, (Chair) Jennifer K. Carroll, MD, MPH David Goodrich, EdD Paul B. Jacobsen, PhD Sara Knight, PhD Erika A. Waters, PhD, MPH Julie A. Wright, PhD Guest: Catherine L. Davis, PhD Staff: Holland LaFave Unable to Attend: Martin Cheatle, PhD Mary Driscoll Minutes 1. Feedback on the Scientific and Professional Liaison Council (SPLC) events and dinner(s) at the Annual Meeting All Council events at the 2014 Annual Meeting went very well. The Council would like to increase attendance to the Council sponsored sessions for the 2015 Annual Meeting. Suggestions included: communicating more with the Program Committee; creating an email blast to go out to the Special Interest Groups; and creating flyers/posting to be set out at the registration desk. 2. Introduction of Catherine Davis Dr. Sheinfeld Gorin introduced Dr. Catherine Davis to the Council. Dr. Davis attended the lunch session with the Cochrane Collaboration at the 2014 Annual Meeting and has expressed interest in developing a liaison with the Obesity Society. Dr. Davis is a long time SBM member and looking to become more involved with the Society. The Obesity Society is a multidisciplinary group whose meeting is growing; it has overlap with SBM, with shared interests in policy. A connection between the two groups already exists at the leadership level: Past President Dr. Dawn Wilson worked with the Obesity Society, and other organizations, to collaborate with the STOP Obesity Alliance. Under President, Lisa Klesges, SBM has again endorsed Obesity Week (level 3, no cost). However a liaison connection has not yet been made at the Council level. 3. Council Manual Follow-up The SPLC Procedures Manual, Liaison Annual Report and Liaison Proposal forms were all approved by the Board of Directors at the 2014 Annual Meeting. SBM Executive Director, Amy Stone has pulled together a report of collaborations that have/are being done at a society wide level. Dr. Sheinfeld Gorin will share the document with the group at a later time. 4. Discussion of updating SPLC liaison website SBM staff request all Council Members to complete a Liaison Annual Report and submit it to the SBM national office. SBM staff will then take the information provided from the report and update the current SPLC page, located at www.sbm.org. Keeping the webpage up to date will increase interest in the Council’s activities and the liaison organizations will be showcased, to mutual benefit. 5. Update on current liaison activities and plans for the upcoming year a. North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG)/Primary Care Possible topics that NAPCRG would like to focus on for the upcoming year are: meaningful use, teen patient care, and creating linkages with health care systems and community. At the 2014 Annual Meeting, NAPCRG attended the focus group hosted by Past President, Dr. Dawn Wilson. Other organizations in attendance included Trust for America’s Health, nursing groups and technology information groups. The question posed to the individuals in attendance was “how can SBM affect practice guidelines?” The consensus of the group was that there are already too many guidelines. SBM should instead assist clinicians on integrating existing guidelines into practice. Dr. Jennifer Carroll would like to possibly make this topic into a policy brief. Action Item: Staff will check the status of the recording of the focus group session. If available to share, it will be forwarded to Dr. Carroll and the Council to get ideas for a potential policy brief. Physical Activity-American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) There are potential paper(s) in preparation following the ACSM-SBM sessions held at the 2014 Annual Meeting, to facilitate the growth of this liaison. The Council then discussed a possible session focusing on health risk appraisals involving ACSM, NAPCRG, and a health technology organization. c. Decision Making Society of Medical Decision Making (SMDM) approved a 10 minute presentation in which Dr. Erika Waters will discuss the Cross Talk initiative between SMDM and SBM. d. Pain No updates e. Informatics Dr. Sheinfeld Gorin will follow-up and Dr. Wright to facilitate the AMIA collaboration. f. Evidence Based Behavioral Medicine (EBBM)-APOS Dr. Jacobsen reported that Dr. Kristi Graves, current Cancer SIG member, is interested in creating new liaison relationships with cancer related organizations. We anticipate that these groups would be requesting endorsements by SBM. Staff reminded the Council that any requests of this nature should be given to SBM staff who will ensure that it goes through the proper channels to be approved. g. VA and Public Health Law Research (PHLR) Dr. Knight reported that the PHLR symposium at the 2014 Annual Meeting was very well attended. The topic area of PHLR is of growing interest with the junior members of SBM. The same group of presenters at the 2014 Annual Meeting is hoping to host a preconference session at the 2015 Annual Meeting. The SBM President is excited about the plans. The Health Policy Council was suggested as a possible collaborator. Dr. Knight was also encouraged to reach out to individual SIG Chairs to see if there is any interest in financial support for the course. h. Other No updates. 6.
