Walsh Landscaping, Inc. This 5,000 Sq.ft. Custom Home was built for a client currently residing in England, ware welltraveled and enjoy Bali. They requested a residence that captures the beauty of a faraway island on a Southwest Florida beach. The clean lines of a contemporary design instill calm. The home's main living areas feature a vaulted ceiling - lined in seagrass with mahogany timbers - reminiscent of Indonesia's tribal gathering houses. The color palette in living areas is neutral enlivened with accents of cantaloupe and tomato. The home's wood and stone architectural features contribute to the island design. Emulating a ceremonial throne in the master bedroom, the functional mahogany headboard becomes an Asian-influenced vanity in the master bathroom, eliminating a wall and promoting openness. Bedrooms soothe the soul with water views, a neutral palette and soft colors. Generous balconies with wood ceilings are similar to those found in a climate experiencing substantial rainfall. Wood screen walls line open-air living rooms below the home. Exterior touches such as copper gutters, coquina shell stone walkways and planters, unique water features and integrated outdoor lighting create a residence that is as magical after sunset as it is welcoming during the day. 2010 Special Judges Award for Detached Single Family Net Zero Home Tommy Williams Homes and Energy Smart Home Plans, LLC for the -MORE- Galloway Model, Net-Zero Energy Home in Gainesville, FL Team Members: Tommy Williams Homes; Energy Smart Home Plans; Florida Hero - Building Science; Florida Solar Energy Center; ECS (Solar Energy Systems) Our judges were thrilled to see so many builders and designers incorporating green building practices into their designs. From affordable housing to commercial projects the Aurora Awards had its share of exemplary home designs. As one judge stated about the winner of the Special Judges Award, “One challenge facing housing is consumer education regarding green and energy efficient construction. This project demonstrates that green doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive nor do you have to compromise on features within the project.” Another judge commented that “"this is exactly what we should be building." 2010 BEST IN STATE AURORA WINNERS Best of State Florida K2 Design Group for the Stephens Residence Captiva Island, FL Team Members Include: Benchmark General Contractors and R.S. Trendy draw-shades compliment custom fabric panels to create inviting but contemporary window treatments. Global-influenced accessories capture this young-at-heart buyer, who happily foregoes extra space for international adventure. Apple martinis and chocolate-covered strawberries in the kitchen show that while at home, this condo’s target -MORE- buyer loves to socialize. The kitchen’s open layout flows seamlessly into the dining and family rooms for optimal happy hour entertaining. To relax, the master bedroom provides retreat of simple luxury with heavenly bedding and a stylish horizontal wall detail, bringing attention to the room’s ample size. Best of State – Illinois Interior Design Associates for the Mather North Evanston, Illinois Team members include: Mather LifeWays, Solomon Cordwell Buenz, Daniel Weinbach & Partners and Interior Design Associates, Inc. Located on Chicago’s North Shore and in Evanston’s federal historic district, this “new urbanist” CCRC is positioned on a site formerly occupied by two obsolete senior residences. Phase I (North) is a new 11-story mid-rise completed in 2009, housing common areas, and Phase II (South) is a 2nd new 11-story mid-rise to be completed in 2011. The Gateway Gallery, a climate-controlled underground corridor between the two buildings, will be constructed during Phase II. The community includes underground parking, rooftop terraces, gardens, walking paths, and a concert lawn. The residences ranging from $339,000 to over $1.8M offer views of Evanston, Lake Michigan, and the downtown Chicago skyline. The community is classically designed in the Beaux Arts tradition, with a high level of exterior detailing. The wellappointed common areas of the North Building have a transitional aesthetic, while providing senior-friendly functionality. Aging-in-Place features include: community commons that provide a variety of lounge and dining venues; mid-rise residential floors that facilitate shorter walking distances; large expanses of windows and Juliet balconies that allow natural light; and wide corridors for easy passage and egress. Best of State- Louisiana The Domain Companies for the Crescent Club New Orleans New Orleans, LA Team Members include: Humphreys & Partners Architects and HPA Design The Crescent Club is part of Domain’s effort to play a leading role in the recovery and economic development in New Orleans. Domain has advanced a vision for the Tulane Avenue Corridor as the epicenter of a new regional economy and resurgence of New Orleans’ downtown. With $125+ million of development within the Corridor, Domain is leading the area’s emergence as the anchor for New Orleans’ recovery. The Crescent Club is a 228-unit/18,000sf retail mixed-income, mixeduse development. Humphreys & Partners Architects created a design that incorporates modern elements and energy-efficient design with the area’s historic architecture and local artwork. Apartments feature thoughtful layouts, high-end kitchens; washer/dryers, dishwasher and microwave; sleek baths; wood, tile and carpeted floors; generous closets and balconies. Amenities include a courtyard with resort-style pool; fitness centers; clubhouses; business centers, community garden and garage parking. Extensive services include concierge, breakfast, online payments and maintenance requests and resident activities. The Crescent Club’s multi-tiered income mix was designed to serve the surrounding area and downtown. Incorporating the critically -MORE- needed neighborhood retail the Crescent Club is becoming a catalyst for the area’s recovery. Surrounding streets have been rebuilt and the Domain Company recently renovated surrounding flooded buildings and rebuilt the area’s public park. Best of State Georgia Beasley & Henley Interior Design for 5 East Apartments Atlanta,Georgia Team Members Include: Pollack Partners and JH&P The client’s goal and our mission was to entice high-end, urban renters into this new apartment complex. To do this, we created a chic urban oasis that is progressive, new and fresh; mixing modern design with the look of an upscale resort. To differentiate this project from its high-style competition we created such details as glass-enclosed rooms, stained concrete floors, bold artwork, sculptures, and sleek, draped walls. The main leasing room has dramatic painted stripe walls of mustard & cream contrasted by dark stained wood floors. Cool grays, soft whites, rich browns, with pops of green carry through the closing room, conference room and offices. The clubroom is designed around the custom designed demonstration chef's kitchen. Bright orange walls set the mood in this fun, relaxed spot which also features a wood-paneled business and gaming center. The material specs and the furnishings are key. They are fresh and funky – looking more ‘Architectural Digest’ sophisticated than boring old rental apartment. This complex is 94% occupied! Best of State – Puerto Rico RTKL Associates Inc. for the Cosmopolitan -MORE- San Juan, Puerto Rico Team Members Include: Interlink Group; RTKL Associates Inc. / CMA Cosmopolitan redefines luxury high-rise condominium living in Puerto Rico while reinvigorating the Miramar District. The first significant innovation in this 19-story, 300,000 SF tower is the structural system of columns and slabs. This created flexibility for interior wall locations between and within units and floor to ceiling, wall-to-wall exterior glass. Second, RTKL created two cores rather than one, giving units direct elevator access and exclusive entryways. The third differentiator was to create open unit plans while respecting local desire for separation of formal and informal activities. Kitchens engage with the informal living areas but are visually separated from formal areas. Master Suites feature spa-like baths and large dressing areas. Expansive balconies with glass handrails nearly double the living space. Security was further improved by a dramatic motor court entry plaza. Four townhouses mask the parking structure and give live and scale to the street. Three levels of parking create a podium on the sloping site, highlighted by an infinity-edge pool, fitness center, entertainment room, and children’s play area. In addition to the architecture and interior design RTKL provided naming, logo, and branding. Best of State – Texas ZOM of Texas, Inc. for La Maison on Revere in River Oaks Neighborhood Houston, Texas Team Members Include: ZOM Texas, Inc.; RTKL Associates Inc.; MESA Design Group and Faulkner Design Group Located in River Oaks, one of Houston’s most prestigious neighborhoods, La Maison’s architectural character blends comfortably with the scale and grandeur of the surrounding estates by capturing the historical urban spirit of the Gulf Coast and New Orleans. Situated on a tranquil tree lined street, La Maison caters to young professionals seeking a prestigious address, modern amenities, and urban convenience in an elegant setting. Characteristic design elements include deep, filigreed balconies, brick garden walls and lush private courtyards evoking the traditional hospitality of the French Quarter. A grand arrival sequence begins with a masonry archway leading into a brick-paved motor court reflecting the sound of an elegant fountain. From here guests and residents enter a two-story lobby where they are greeted with concierge-style service and sophisticated décor. The 650-foot long, four and five-story building is designed to appear as a series of smaller individual buildings thereby reducing its scale and overall impact in the community. Five different courtyards offer a range of passive and active environments, including a resort-style swimming pool and outdoor kitchen area designed for gracious entertaining. A clothing-optional sun deck on the roof offers residents an opportunity to escape while enjoying dramatic views of the Houston skyline. Best of State Virginia CMSS Architects for the Power Plant at Rocketts Landing Richmond, Virginia Team Members Include: The WVS Companies and H & A Architects & Engineers Constructed around 1887, the Power Plant, once used to provide power for Richmond’s fleet of trolleys, was left in ruins after this mode of transportation declined. The developer of Rocketts Landing, a historic brownfield redevelopment, wanted to preserve the historic building and re- -MORE- purpose it into a modern facility to meet market demands. The goal was to create a dramatic 5story outdoor piazza starting at the flood plain level, engaging the street on the second level, and rising above. The lower levels houses the Virginia Boat Club while the third and fourth floors are occupied by an upscale restaurant that features 180 degree views of the waterfront and outdoor dining terraces. The fifth floor houses the harbormaster office. The architecture of the Power Plant blends the historic architecture of the surrounding neighborhoods, the industrial heritage of the riverfront site, and contemporary influences. It parallels the evolving life of the structure, blending the old with the new. The collapsed top floor roof structure and crumbled brick walls facing the river were removed to allow for tall windows that showcase the river and skyline and a “butterfly roof” that dramatizes a growing sense of space as the ceiling height increases toward the River. 2010 Grand Aurora Award Winners 06-002 2010 Grand Aurora Award Winner Detached Single-Family Home $200,001-$300,000 Form Community For Thoreau, a growHome in Winter Garden, FL Team Members Include: Form Community; Morrissey Design; AECOM; Dobson's Wood and Water; DP Interiors Level of Awards Won: Aurora; Grand 09-001 2010 Grand Aurora Award Winner Detached Single-Family Home $750,001-$1,000,000 Alvarez New Concepts For Dakota Concept Home in Tampa, FL Team Members Include: Alvarez New Concepts; Edgar Ellerbe Designs; Mazas Design Gallery Level of Awards Won: Aurora; Grand 18-003 2010 Grand Aurora Award Winner Custom Home (One of a Kind) $1,500,000-$2,000,000 Phil Kean Designs, Inc.
