Exams and Quizzes: Three 50-min exams and a 100-min final exam will be given
during the semester. Short quizzes will be given on Fridays unless otherwise stated. To
accommodate absences due to illness and other excused absences, the lowest two quiz
grades will be dropped. No makeup quiz is allowed. Make up exams will not be given
unless you have acceptable reasons such as personal illness or family emergencies or
university sponsored functions (i.e., WIU band trips, field trips in other WIU classes,
professional meeting [not sorority/fraternity, or other clubs], WIU athletics, etc.). In all
cases, documentation is required, and must be submitted to the instructor ASAP; and
makeup exam must be completed in the following week.
An incomplete grade will NOT be given to a student with a failing grade. No incomplete
will be given to a student without documented evidence of an emergency that requires the
student be away from the university or requires that the student miss the final
examination. The student shall notify the instructor of the emergency as soon as possible
and prior to the final examination.
Attendance: You are expected to attend class regularly and punctually. All students are
responsible for all information and materials given in class whether you are present or
not. Excessive absences will be reported to the financial aid office and your academic
advisor. Attendance at the laboratory is required and will be checked for each lab. Only
one make-up lab is allowed with good excuses as mentioned under “Exams and quizzes.”
Please turn off cell phones and beepers while in class out of consideration for your
classmates. It can be very distracting- especially during an exam! Also, class time is not
a social hour; please refrain from casual conversation during class time.
Outside Work Requirements: Students are expected to read ahead and be prepared for
class. You will probably find that this is a very fast-paced course. Therefore, it is highly
advisable to keep up with the materials. Past experience suggests that reading the
designated chapter before the class and going over the notes after each class is essential.
A daily minimum of two hours of out of class work is needed to do well in this class.
Write down any questions at that point. You may submit your questions by email or ask
in the next lecture period.
Chemistry Help Center. Chemistry help center is located in Currens 515. Free tutoring
and/or help is provided by the department through the Chemistry Help Center. Hours will
be posted.
Statement on Ethics. Western Illinois University, like all communities, functions best
when its members treat one another with honesty, fairness, respect, and trust. Students
have rights and responsibilities. The following action is prohibited under the Student
Conduct Code: Disorderly Conduct: Any behavior which disrupts the regular or normal
functions of the University community, including behavior which breaches the peace or
violates the rights of others. Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic
dishonesty constitute a serious violation of University conduct regulations. Any student
convicted of academic dishonesty, can receive a failing grade and may be subject to
further academic penalties. Web address for Academic Integrity Policy
(http://www.wiu.edu/policies/acintegrity.php). Please remember that you are expected to
do your own work at all times. You can’t directly copy homework or lab report from your
classmates or any other sources. However, discussing homework questions or lab reports
with your classmates and others is fine.
Students with Disabilities. In accordance with University policy and the Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA), academic accommodations may be made for any student who
notifies the instructor of the need for an accommodation. For the instructor to provide the
proper accommodation(s) you must obtain documentation of the need for an
accommodation through Disability Resource Center (DRC) and provide it to the
instructor. It is imperative that you take the initiative to bring such needs to the
instructor's attention, as he/she is not legally permitted to inquire about such particular
needs of students. Students who may require special assistance in emergency evacuations
(i.e. fire, tornado, etc.) should contact the instructor as to the most appropriate procedures
to follow in such an emergency. Contact Disability Resource Center (DRC) at 298-2512
for additional services.
Emergency Preparedness. The WIU Office of Risk Management and Emergency
Preparedness provide resources on how to respond to emergency situations. Please view
the video resources at www.wiu.edu/rmep/ (Click “Resources” on the right side of the
page). If the fire alarms sound and/or students are asked to evacuate the building all
students should proceed immediately to the nearest exit and gather at the southwest
corner of the Higgins parking lot (near the fence) until the “all clear” is given.

Lab Instructor: Ms. Durga Yeramala
Lab meeting time and place: Th, 8:00 am - 10:50 am, or 2:00 - 4:50 pm, Currens 423
Lab Manual: Laboratory Experiments for General, Organic, and Biochemistry, 7e by
Bettelheim and Landesberg, Brooks/Cole.
Number of Experiments: Each student is expected to successfully complete 10
experiments.
Grading (200 points total): The laboratory portion of the course will be graded based on
two lab exams (midterm and final exams/50 points), 10 lab reports (14 points/each) and
Check-in and check-out (5 points each). Failure to complete the lab with at least 60% will
result in failure of the course.
General: Safety is the first concern in a chemistry lab. Material Safety Data Sheets
(MSDS) information about all chemicals utilized in the laboratory can be found at the
following web site. http://physchem.ox.ac.uk/MSDS/#MSDS. Proper handling of
chemicals is expected. Safety glasses are to be worn at all times.
Attendance: Attendance in the lab is required. If it should be necessary to miss a lab,
please notify your instructor by e-mail before the fact if possible. No make-up lab and lab
exam unless you have acceptable excuses such as personal illness or family emergencies
or University sponsored functions (i.e. WIU band trips, field trips in other WIU classes,
WIU athletics, etc.). In all cases, documentation is required, and must be submitted to the
instructor ASAP. Make-up exam must be completed in the following week or ASAP.
Only one make-up lab is allowed.
Lab Reports: Laboratory reports will consist of two parts, pre-lab (5 points) and post-lab
(9 points). The reports must be written legibly.
Pre-lab: Pre-lab reports must be completed before coming to the lab and must be turned
in at the beginning of the lab session. Failure to complete the pre-lab section of the lab
report before the start of the lab will result in losing 5 points for each report.
Post-lab report: Post-lab report must include answers to the post-lab questions (all
questions should be answered unless otherwise indicated by your instructor) and data
sheet if is required, and must be submitted at the beginning of the next lab session. Late
lab reports will be docked by 5% each day. Lab report turned in two weeks after the due
date will not be graded.
