An Afternoon Tea,
Steeped in History
The New Oxford Area Historical Society will host the second 'An Afternoon
Tea, Steeped in History,' a fundraiser, on Saturday, July 23. There will be
two seatings - the first at 11:00 and the second at 2:15. Place settings of
antique china, crystal, and silver will grace the tables at the First Lutheran
Church in New Oxford, PA. The full menu consists of tender scones,
served with Devonshire cream and lemon curd, delicious soup, four
different elegant tea sandwiches, a variety of scrumptious desserts, and a
selection of delightful teas. At 1:15 pm, Ruthmary McIlhenny, in 'Mamie
Remembers', will portray First Lady Mamie Eisenhower as a symbol of her
time and an ideal of womanhood. Ruthmary has studied both the
professional and personal life of Mamie Eisenhower through research,
hand written letters and her personal memoirs and her performance has
drawn rave reviews. Cost is $25. Seating is limited.
Tickets must be purchased in advance by July 18th.

REVIEWS OF PAST EVENTS
The Royal Tea Room by Dottie Johnson
After a long drive and lots of traffic we arrived at The Royal Tea Room in La Plata, MD.
If I may say so early in this review, I and fellow travelers feel it was worth the ride.
There was a large building with a sidewalk lined with shrubs and teapots and cups
sitting in the mulch, a sweeping wide porch on two sides with tables and chairs for
lounging, as well as ceiling fans twirling above. The first and second floors were
decorated with items for sale, a great array of things to purchase, and we know many a
Royal-tea Club lady loves to buy!
We started our tea with a tea titled 'Midsummers decaf peach'. Our first course of their
'Royal Tea' was a delicious freshly baked, still warm, chocolate and white chocolate
banana scone. There was Devonshire cream, lemon curd and strawberry jam if you
wanted. Next we had a choice of their 'signature' cream of crab or tomato tortellini
soup. All raved about the cream of crab and after personally having the tomato
tortellini, I loved it! The soup was accompanied with a fresh garden salad with
pineapple mango dressing, which most loved but those of us with a more delicate pallet
found it a bit spicy. After that we received a selection of hors d'oeuvres. Miniature
chicken cordon blue, triangle spanakopita, and seasoned potato pancakes (with roast
beef and blue cheese) called 'Black & Blue’. All were so tasty! As if all that wasn't
enough we then were served a tiered platter, elegantly displayed with an array of tea
sandwiches and savories, assorted petite sweets, garnished with fresh fruits. The tea
sandwiches included a tuna melt in a pastry shell, ham and cream cheese on multi grain
bread, chicken salad on wheat, egg salad on white, and slices of cantaloupe and
strawberries. Four petits fours colored pink, yellow, 'chocolate', and blue, each with
white or chocolate cake and a thin cream layer flavored lemon, cherry, or chocolate.
Also a delicious cannoli and a raspberry tart pastry.
I saw many 'take out boxes' when leaving The Royal Tea Room and heard many great
comments about the food and establishment. I do believe a good time was had by all.
Trust me, I didn't have to eat for the rest of the day!
Tea on the Tiber by Donna Lerew
The weather was delightful to travel to tea in Ellicott City on Saturday, June 25. Tea on
the Tiber tearoom is the oldest building in Ellicott City. In 1972 Hurricane Agnes flooded
the building up to waist level on the SECOND floor! In 1999 the building was heavily
damaged in a fire which started in the building next to them. The tearoom was opened
in 2004. Our hostess was very welcoming as she walked each guest up to the second
floor.
Each person chose their own pot of tea. I had the mango iced tea but tried the
Chocolate tea, pomegranate Oolong, Iced wine tea and Darjeeling which others shared
at my table. It was great fun trying all the different flavored teas.
The food was presented on three tier servers which held:
English Manor scone with lemon curd, clotted cream and triple berry jam with fresh fruit
and cheese.
Sandwiches included: Tiber's Tomato Tea sandwich, Asparagus Prosciutto Savory,
Pickled cucumber on pumpernickel and Cinnamon Date Tea savory.
We finished with sweets - White Chocolate Raspberry cake in 3 layers, Tiber Tartlette,
Irish Shortbread Cookie and a Chocolate covered Strawberry.
Twenty four women attended the tea including one guest and three first timers. A
wonderful tea in a charming tearoom in a historic city. I am sure the ladies will want to
return again to Tea on the Tiber.

REVIEWERS NEEDED
Have you noticed there haven't been many reviews in the newsletter lately? When you
attend a tea, please let the event hostess know and volunteer to write a review. Then

RESERVED SEATS FOR TEA EVENTS
It has come to our attention that there are some questions about our reserved seat
policy. As a club, we will not reserve seats for you. However, if a club member gets to
an event early and reserves seats so all those in their party may sit together, that is fine.
If you are coming to an event with a friend, and you want to make sure you sit together,
please arrive early.

The Victorian Society at Falls Church announces the sale of their
latest book, Afternoon Tea in the Victorian Tradition. This
cookbook contains over 100 modern and vintage recipes of savories,
scones and muffins, sweets, and accompaniments such as faux
clotted cream and fruited butters, all of which are suitable for an
afternoon tea, a garden party, a dessert party, or even an informal
dinner. Additionally there are 20 pages devoted to historical
information and customs, tea accessories and accoutrements,
etiquette, theme teas, and how to arrange a tea table (including
napkin folding). There’s even a section on tea leaf reading. The
majority of the information in this book has been gleaned from
Victorian-era publications. So if you enjoy afternoon tea and want to
know more about how our Victorian ancestors served and enjoyed
afternoon tea, then this is the book for you. The cost is $14.50 each which includes the cost of
shipping and handling; please contact Linda Lau at vicsocfc@hotmail.com or (703) 425-0292
for further details or to order your copy.
