CSM ACCREDITATION FOLLOW-UP SURVEY--Classified Staff Fall 2006 4. In the previous Fall 2005 accreditation survey for Classified Staff, many indicated that they do not have enough input in College decision-making. What policies or practices would you make to improve our decision-making and shared governance processes? [Please give specific examples] An online suggestion box. We where not ask important question that would help effect how students and classified staff where treated email notifications, comment boards (online), or other announcements providing information on plans or decision making process and outcomes. Allow for suggestions/comments from all who wish to respond. Communication, Communication, Communication. Other than CSEA, the Classified Staff has no way to communicate. The above suggestions are good. A classified newsletter would be wonderful Practices to consider would be to have maybe 1 day a semester where there is opportunities to learn about other jobs/positions on campus from a crosstraining/information support basis. This would benefit all staff and college employees. the college (not the district) should establish practices which are inclusive of all college staff as a whole (classif, admin, fac). we are disconnected from each other. to be successful in delivering the best possible resources and information to our students, we have to be connected to each other, each department, and each goal. n/a Better and more timely information regarding upcoming decisions. The closing of the Learning Center was not thoroughly thought out and its lack of existence will have long term consequences. For shared governance to work, the administration must genuinely believe in shared governance and not just pretend belief. In the years running up to the renovation of Building 18, I and many colleagues spent many hours in meetings developing our proposals for the renovation. When the results were presented to us, it was clear that few of our proposals had been considered. All those meetings had been a sham. The administration had listened to outside consultants and only pretended to listen to us. When we raise questions about the decisions, we got anger rather than answers which said a lot about how much our input was valued. The creation of an email Listserv would allow Classified Staff representatives on shared governance bodies to more easily and effectively communicate with their constituents, sharing information and seeking feedback. n/a No suggestions 5. What improvements can be made to ensure that CSM fosters a climate of mutual trust and respect among Classified Staff and administrators? [Please give specific examples] By encouraging a classified senate that has no affiliation with the classified union. The two need to be completely separate entities. Somehow convince certain classified staff that administration is not the enemy and to get help with their paranoia meeting together lunches Open discussions as often as possible. Classified opinions and suggestions used or evaluated to implement and streamline district procedures, policies, workloads, etc... Classified staff are included in College Council, budget Subcommittee and other college committees, but really have no way to communicate with other classified. The Classified Planning Committee has recently been given a classified e-mail list, which will be a huge help. I think CSM does a wonderful job in foster a climate of mutual trust and respect. localize services at the college level; example: custodial services. reinstate college hour; don't be afraid to be honest with one another (first, one has to be honest with oneself....huh?) n/a Make sure of adequately disseminated information regarding goals, plans and decisions. This would help in the alleviation of the occasional perception of a hidden agenda. The administration along with the faculty should not treat the Classified Staff like peons and more humanely there would be a better working environment. See # 4. The administration must not sham trust and respect but practice it. Create, continue, and expand open and honest communication. n/a Communication!! through email updates, monthly meetings in the theater, whatever it takes. If you selected "other" please specify: floors in classrooms where there carpet Need more Handicap Parking in Lot 5 The number of times that the lights in the north parking lots and walkways have gone out is far in excess of that which should be considered acceptable. Lack of a functional Learning center 9. Please provide any other comments about facilities. There is not consistent follow-though on in-house contractual arrangements for event set ups. Diagrams are often disregarded and some set ups are not done. I always worry whether a set up I've requested will be completed. Groundskeeping is deplorable. They don't seem to work at all except maybe for one person there overworked and understaffed I appreciate the notifications received often and in advance that may affect my working conditions. I do think a focus on cleaning interior areas could be reviewed and improved. Also, heating and cooling systems could be better regulated/maintained or installed. The buildings are old and could use a little attention for remodeling in cost effective ways (which is already in progress). online work orders are hit and miss; most are hits, some are completely ignored or not followed up on. I understand staffing is an issue however our offices are on many days dirty. Counters and other surfaces are just not cleaned. I assume that is a janitor’s responsibility. Perhaps responsibilities have been shifted without our knowing. Bathrooms could be cleaner Some work requests are handled rather quickly while others seem to take more time. There should be a maintenance engineer on campus any time that students are on campus, at least at night, to ensure that when (not if) the lights go out (again) the problem can be handled immediately by qualified personnel. The roadways are in serious need of repair and repainting. Anytime Swinerton would like to move their 50+ foot mobilehome which they have never used in the two years it has been occupying 10 parking spaces in lot 9 would be appreciated. Hire more Custodians, especially during the day. We have a terrible problem with temperature control in Building 18-101, 103 and 103A. We get a lot of talk about this or that person or business being consulted, but nothing substantial has been done in almost a year. Too little staff for too big a job. Staff are not always educated about what needs to be done when their assignment changes from one building to the next. Tasks that I would expect to be routine - such as cleaning the floor of an office even if only once a month - are evidently not routine. As the keeper of the budget for my department, I am always concerned that the costs charged by facility for anything I may need done will be prohibitive. 10. Other comments: the college need to think out side the box and some how get the message about coursed that are offered and how and what you can do if your retraining in short periods. we need to advertise in papers, TV, radio, movie houses to boost enrollment p.s. why is it that everything gets cleaned before the chancellor shows up? why aren't things reasonably clean all the time? Need More Handicap Parking Spaces in Lot 5 The gross lack of traffic enforcement should be at the top of the list of corrective actions. Poor facility maintenance is important, and students (and staff) having to traverse the campus in literally complete darkness due to electrical failure is worse still, but the day someone is crippled or killed because yet another vehicle traveling well over a legitimate safe speed runs yet another stop sign and collides with another vehicle or pedestrian, will be the crowning achievement in campus incompetence.
