The Autry is an intercultural history
center dedicated to exploring and
sharing the stories, experiences, and
perceptions of the diverse peoples of the
American West.
The Education Dept. at the Autry
provides a number of unique and
engaging programs. Our tours and classes
bring the stories and lessons of history to
life through engagement with our
talented museum education staff and
docents, hands-on learning
opportunities, and museum gallery tours.
Topics include Native American culture,
California gold rush history, and
westward expansion. Students also get a
broad overview of the museum and its
exceptional collection of historical
artifacts and Western art (from
nineteenth-century landscape paintings
to movie and TV Westerns).

Tour of the Museum conducted by an
interpreter specially trained to lead
children’s tours. 1880’s school house
experience in the Banning Residence
Museums one-room schoolhouse. Turn of
the century games. Tour of the coaching
barn with its collection of horse drawn
vehicles. Photo Gallery – Life in Los
Angeles and California in the later half of
the 19th Century. Part of Southern
California’s Pioneer history.

Cost
Children will sit on the floor for
performance. Caution them to sit quietly,
not to touch puppets and strings, do not
scoot forward and obstruct performance
of marionette. Some marionettes are 3-4
feet tall, manipulated by puppeteers.
Children are as interested in the
puppeteers as the puppets. Children can
see and hear puppeteers talking for the
puppet as well as “work” the puppet
strings.

conservation, endangered species, and
history.

The La Brea Tar Pits is important
because the immense number of
fossils found right here tells us
what Los Angeles was like during
the Ice Age 11,000 to 60,000
years ago. Watch the processes
of paleontology unfold inside the
glass-enclosed Fish Bowl Lab as
scientists and volunteers prepare
fossils including “Zed,” a
recently discovered male
Columbian Mammoth. Go outside
the Museum and explore our
Pleistocene Garden, visit

solving, planning, following visual
and auditory directions. Preview
activities would include identifying
lines and shapes in our environment;
goal being to demystify the drawing
process.

On stage, Dennis Schaller might find
himself locked in a bathroom, stuck
in a revolving door, or landing
unexpectedly in an outer galaxy.
Dennis involves the expressive
abilities of students and provides
them a theater experience which
motivates self-expression, introduces
creative mime movement, audience
participation, and acting through the
mask. It is a fast moving, “hands on”
performance consisting of
comedy/drama pieces for
appropriate age groups.
