EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
Position: Program Coordinator
Organization: Backyard Bounty http://www.backyardbounty.ca
Location: Guelph, Ontario
Backyard Bounty is looking for a Program Coordinator to start part time this winter and phase
into full time for the 2011 growing season. Our current Program Coordinator is moving into a
consulting role with Orland Conservation (the parent company to Backyard Bounty). Thus, this
position is now up for grabs! Applications are due February 11th and the position will start at the
end of the month.
Our Business:
Backyard Bounty is Guelph's Urban Agriculture Project. Our aim is to convert lawn into
productive vegetable gardens and in doing so provide natural, fresh and nutritious vegetables to
the local community. To date we have converted about 2.5 acres or 35 resource dependent lawns
to garden through partnering with members of the community. We also desire to increase
awareness about urban food production while improving the biodiversity and reducing pollution
in Guelph. We sell the vegetables to the community of Guelph through the Backyard Bounty
Box (CSA share), at several markets and to many restaurants in Guelph. For the 2011 growing
season we are aiming to have 120 CSA members, and double production for restaurants and
markets. To do this we will have two senior farmers and 4 interns working with us. We will also
be doing edible landscaping for homeowners in Guelph as a way of providing additional options
for the community.
The Work:
This is a very intense and demanding job but with great rewards. It involves coordinating a lot of
varied work at the same time. The work includes but is not limited to: website management
(WordPress), promotions development and distribution, prepping and managing our new intern
program, writing grant proposals, writing newsletters, assisting with the CSA and
communicating with the members, communicating with Restaurants for orders, developing a
recipe book, running the Farmer's Market booth each Saturday, being the face of Backyard
Bounty, and assuring that all runs smoothly.
Key Requirements/Qualifications:
- The ideal candidate will be interested in committing to more than one season;
- Experience in coordinating several projects at the same time;
- Passionate for local, sustainable food/agriculture;
- Have good writing and marketing skills;
- Preference will be given to someone with some farming/CSA/related experience.
- Motivated

also pragmatic. To do this, you must be able to prioritize effectively, work under tight deadlines,
handle multiple jobs at once, be able to implement projects smoothly, and be forward looking.
Technical
This position will start at the end of February part-time, phasing into full-time (40 hours per
week) in April. The Program Coordinator will be working under the Program Manager in a
training position with the idea of slowing taking on the work of the Manager. Work is generally
during week days, and on Saturdays at the farmers' market and you must be able to do some
work from home on your own computer.

Farm Internship Opportunity
Type: full-time internship with food, accom., stipend, May - October 2011
Waratah Downs Organic Farm http://www.waratahdowns.com
Location: Iroquois
The Farm
Waratah Downs is a 200 acre certified organic farm nestled very close to the beautiful St.
Lawrence River. We raise a small herd of beef cattle, a small flock of sheep and some laying
hens for fresh organic eggs. During the summer we raise pastured poultry. We grow a variety of
grains and organic soybeans, along with pasture and roughly 10 acres dedicated for vegetables.
Interns will mostly be involved in the vegetable part of our farm.
The Family
John Weatherhead and Colleen Ross own and operate the farm. They have three young adult
children that have worked on the farm their entire lives and are now off doing their own thing.
What Interns Will Learn and Do on the Farm:
You will be working alongside the farmers doing various tasks that will teach you about all
aspects of organic vegetable production. We also have livestock so you will be exposed to
rotational grazing of cattle, a small flock of sheep and chickens. There are a few beehives on the
farm. Interns interested in beekeeping can assist with beekeeping duties.
Each month you will join other interns in eastern Ontario for workshops at other farms.
Horticulture tasks will include:
* planting seeds in pots in the greenhouse
* general greenhouse work such as watering, preparing seed trays and plant care
* assisting with soil preparation in the field- laying ground cover for example
* transplanting from green house to the field- by hand and using our tractor mounted transplanter
* assisting with weed control using mechanical and hand held tools
* assisting with pest control using organic approved methods such as row crop cover and
certified organic products
* harvesting of vegetables- we will show you exactly how to harvest each crop and will work
with you to ensure that it is done correctly. These tasks are very specific and not as easy at it may
appear.
* preparing vegetables for market -- hydro cooling, washing, bunching, storage methods,
packaging etc.
* Farmers market stall- set up and sales. We would like you to assist with at least one farmers
market/week
* CSA- organizing, packing and delivery of boxes to customers
* Restaurants and other wholesale deliveries- you will learn about wholesale bulk orders
compared to retail direct to customer.
* Other tasks as required
Livestock:
We raised grass fed/pasture based animals. Your tasks may include:
* daily watering and feeding of chickens (and other animals when required)
* collecting eggs, cleaning and putting in cartons
* assisting with making of hay- unloading and stacking square bales in the barn
* assisting with moving fences
* observing livestock for herd/flock health
Marketing:
We sell our vegetables from May through to November through a small but growing local CSA.
We also sell at the Ottawa Farmers Market every Sunday and at the Main Street Farmers Market
each Saturday. We sell to local restaurants and some independent food stores. There are some
farmgate sales as well.
Other Farm Tasks:
Our farm is very biodiverse, therefore the tasks and experiences you have will vary considerably.
Depending on your proven ability we may ask you to drive a tractor, mow the lawn or assist with
a building project. You may spend some time assisting with gardens around the house and
buildings to keep the farm looking great. General tidy up and maintenance is important for a well
organized busy farm to run smoothly and to keep the place looking nice. You may be asked to
weed the flower gardens or help with an outdoor painting project. This is all a part of the wholefarm family experience.
The Food: You will eat the food that comes from the farm.
Fun?
Working together as a team in a healthy environment is fun. Many of the tasks we do give
pleasure. The farm is only 5 minutes from the St. Lawrence River so we go swimming regularly.
The Farmer’s Market is a lot of fun too - getting to know the people that appreciate the food you
have helped to grow.
Accommodation:
There is a trailer on the farm. It has two single beds, a nice kitchen/sitting area and a full
bathroom. Two interns can stay in the trailer - it is very nice! You will have breakfast on your
own and others meals if you prefer. Or, you can join the family for lunch and dinner. Prep and
clean up is shared by all.
Stipend and work hours/conditions:
As an intern it may very well be that you have never worked on a farm before. Compensation for
your work will depend on your level of experience and your proven abilities. The education you
get on our farm will not only help you decide if you want to become a farmer but will equip you
with skills that you will not learn at an agriculture college or university.
You will get food produced on the farm, assistance with accommodation and a stipend.
We would like you to work 5 days/week. We really want you to stay until the end of October if
possible. If you require a week off during the season this can be arranged. We
ask that you do not take more than 1 week off. We would like you to start work the first week of
May at the latest. If you must start later we can work with you. Pay days are every two weeks.
We can not offer advances.
A valid drivers license is an asset.
More details on available on our website, http://www.waratahdowns.com
Please send your resume with a cover letter telling us why you want this farm experience and
what you can bring to our farm team. Apply before April 1st to: Colleen Ross and John
Weatherhead at waratahdowns@gmail.com
When applying, please indicate that you saw this posting at GoodWorkCanada.ca.
