Guidelines for using the BFW quiz styles
Terminology used in this document:
element – A part of a question, such as the question itself, an answer, or a response
(feedback for an answer), etc.
The guidelines:
1. When first starting the manuscript for a quiz, there are several ways to get the BFW quiz
styles into your Word doc. You can start with a blank Word doc that contains the quiz
styles (BFW quiz styles - blank). You can copy existing ms. from a Word doc that doesn’t
have the styles int it, into a Word doc that does. Or you can import the styles into an
existing Word doc (for instructions, see the BFW quiz styles-Production Guidelines
document).
2. Follow these two steps to style an element:
 Position the cursor at the beginning of the first line for the element.
 Select the style for this element from the drop-down menu (below the File menu). If
this drop-down isn’t there, you can turn it on by going to the View menu, selecting
Toolbars, and then selecting Formatting.
3. Don’t number the questions. Instead, make sure the questions are in the correct order
and they will be numbered automatically. (See #8 for info on enumerating answers.)
4. Line spaces
Hit the ‘return’ key between elements, but only once.
In other words, there cannot be line spaces between the elements of a question.
Do not hit the ‘return’ key in the middle of any element.
To add line breaks within an element, use ‘shift-return’.
Note: You can view ‘return’ and ‘shift-return’ markers by turning on the paragraph button
in the Standard Toolbar of Word. It’s the button with the icon under the menus. Doing
this allows you to see the invisible characters for returns, spaces, etc.
The special character for a ‘return’ is this: .
The special character for a ‘shift-return’ is this: .
5. Line spaces can be added between questions, but make sure they are styled as ‘Normal’.
6. Formatting options of bold, italic, underline, or superscript can be used on any text within an
element, and in any combination.
Note: For now, the font cannot be changed.

7. Here’s an example of two questions as they should appear in a well-styled quiz
manuscript. For more examples, see the BFW quiz styles - example document.

A. Yes
Correct. What choice is there really?
B. No
Incorrect. But then again…
How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie

C. Three

8. Each answer for a question should be enumerated however you want them to be
displayed. And each feedback response should include everything that should be
displayed. For example:

Incorrect, see p. 355, Module 27, Myers, Psychology: Myers in Modules, 6e.
B. left temporal lobe.

verb

9. You can add notes for whoever is doing the quiz production by using the “Production
Note” style.
10. Images can be inserted “in-line” within the text of an element. Images should be GIF or
JPEG format.
