FOREWORD
The 50th Anniversary of our Nation’s Independence is cause not only for celebration but for
reflection as every Jubilee year demands.
In the words of the speech made by our first Prime Minister, Dr. Eric Williams to the children of
our nation on the eve of Independence, August 30th, 1962.
“The guiding principle of our Nation whatever its limitations is distinguished by the
honesty and integrity of its citizens.”
This integrity rests in the actions of society and institutions.
The word integrity means
consistency of actions, values, methods, principles, expectations and outcomes.
Fatima College strives to foster a culture of positive attitudes and an appreciation of all talents;
sporting and cultural.
Our Concert, Gifts of Blue and Gold is a tangible expression of this integrity. As we celebrate
the fourth year of this Concert, may the values of commitment and collaboration run deep in the
hearts of all those who participate and so contribute to the building of a mature Nation.
We thank Mr. Noel and Ms. Cumberbatch for their invaluable dedication.
May God bless us all.
FR. GREGORY AUGUSTINE, C.S.Sp
PRINCIPAL
A Note of Thanks from the Production Director
It is with pride that I write this note of thanks to the many persons who united to ensure the success of this our 4th
edition of Gifts of Blue & Gold (GOBAG).
As one might imagine, it is never easy to produce a show of this scale and so I begin by thanking God for His
inspiration, His strength and His Holy Spirit which guides all that I do in my capacity as director. Indeed, through God
all things are possible, even those mountains that seem insurmountable. Thank you God, for answering my prayers and
the prayers of so many others, who turned to the Almighty in the faith, praying for the success of this production.
I take this opportunity to thank the Principals and Vice Principals of both Fatima College and Holy Name
Convent for their continued support of this venture. Without their approval or encouragement, we cannot stage this
production. To you, Fr. Gregory, Mrs. Gomes-Phillips (Fatima), Mrs. Aqui and Mrs. Perkins (Holy Name) I say thank you.
To my colleagues at Fatima College, I say thank you. So many persons helped in various ways – Mr. White, Mr.
Greene, Mr. Wells, Mr. Mc Master, Ms. Lee Ahyen, Mr. Seaton, Ms. Bedase, Ms. Nabbie, Mr. de Gale (backstage
supervision); Mrs. Bejai-Thompson, Ms. Mahelal, Mrs. Ellis, Mrs. Ramdass, Mrs. Hubbard, Mrs. Harricharan, Ms. Nabbie
(Ticket sales); Ms. Roberts, Ms. Rattan, Ms. Samlal, Mr. Seignoret (Set Design); Ms. Clarke (Make-up & Choreography);
Mrs. De Silva (Costumes) and Mrs. Moniquette who came on board to assist her and Mr. de Gale, who acts as our house
announcer and Fatima’s general Master of Ceremonies par excellence. It would be remiss of me if I did not mention that
Ms. Nabbie, one of our newest members of staff and “old girl” of Holy Name Convent also choreographed one of our
dances this evening. In addition, I must make special mention of Mrs. Ellis who managed the Printing & Artwork
Committee, Mrs. De Silva who also dealt with other details in addition to her task of costuming a cast of over 200
teenagers and Ms. Branker who handled many, many other intricate aspects and last minute details that must never be
taken for granted. To you three, I sincerely say thank you, it could not be done without you. It could not be done without
any of you. To all staff at Fatima College, I must say thank you.
To Ms. Cumberbatch…I can’t ever say it enough. I sometimes don’t know how to thank you, but I’ll try again
knowing however that people like you deserve more than just “thanks”. For your tireless support, not just in your
capacity as accompanist but as my colleague, I want you to know how grateful I am to you. Thank you, thank you, thank
you, thank you!
I also want to thank Mrs. Jane Carter. Mrs. Carter and I started working together as she is a former parent of Holy
Name Convent, but now, we’ve adopted her here at Fatima as one of our very own. Working specifically with our Form
1’s in Music Classes, Mrs. Carter has proved to be a true asset and along with Ms. Cumberbatch, has made my role as
Musical Director that much easier. My sincere thanks to you.
To the parents – the parents of the cast who contend with their children being at very demanding rehearsals and
those who worked behind the scenes – Mr. De Verteuil, Juliette Pantin, Yvette Creed and the scores of other parents of the
PSG I say thank you. To Vanessa Raymond, one of our Fatima parents who continues to work with Mrs. De Silva on
costumes, I thank you. Your commitment to this college is truly admirable and we look forward to the many years you
are yet to have with us. I would like to express my gratitude to some parents of Holy Name Convent as well. Ms.
Cherryann Dennis joined the costuming committee last year and stayed on this year. Mrs. Sandra Ameerali, a parent of
one the Upper 6 girls, made herself available at virtually every rehearsal of the mixed choir, assisting me with supervision
of the group of almost 60 students. I thank you both and though your daughters may be leaving Holy Name soon, your
assistance at future concerts will certainly be appreciated.
To my friend and former classmate at Fatima College, Maurice Rawlins, thank you for returning again this year to
bring this production to life. We’ve worked well together for a long time now and it’s always a pleasure for me to
collaborate with you on the GOBAG stage. Thank you for your commitment to the arts and all of us at Fatima College.
To my dear girls of Holy Name Convent – the show is extra special because of you. I do hope that our work
together will grow from strength to strength as the years go by. To the HNC upper 6 crew, especially those who have
been there in some form at all 4 concerts – Gabby, Whitney, Miriam & Myesha, know that this concert will be somewhat
bittersweet as I know that this will be your final performance as students of Holy Name. I hope that I will see you on the
big stage both locally and internationally – yes Regina, Broadway awaits you!
Finally, of course, my boys, my brothers, my students of Fatima College. I am truly grateful to all of you. Thank
you for your dedication and your talent. Thank you for your continued patience under the tyrannical reign of a crazy
Musical Director! Thank you for what you give to all of us, the gift of yourselves. In a special way, I must thank the
leaders of the Senior Choir who do so much behind-the-scenes work for this production and all those other groups – the
Guitar Troupe, the Steel Ensemble, the Junior Choir, the instrumentalists, Theron Ragoonanan and the Form 5 Graduation
Committee and the stagehands led phenomenally by Varun Bhairosingh and Dominic Sudan – all of you who have made
the show a success. To you, my Fatima brothers, thank you always.
Again, to each and every one of you, I thank you!
Kwasi Noel

About the Show
Patrons of Gifts of Blue & Gold may be in for a surprise this year. This 4 th edition of the show will be somewhat
different to what has seemed to become the norm. For the past two years, there have been three main acts, with one being
a mini-musical – many would fondly remember the adaptation of Broadway’s In The Heights back in 2010 and the
intriguing Greek story, The Golden Girdle of Hippolyte, staged last year. Well, allow me to break it to you, this year there
will be no mini-musical. It does not stop here…there will be no major Christmas segment either! No Christmas??? I am
hearing your gasps of skeptical horror now.
However, let not the hearts of the GOBAG faithful be troubled as it is hoped that what we have in store will be
more than enough. This year, our nation celebrates its golden jubilee and so we pay tribute to our country with all the
pomp and splendour that such a milestone deserves. The 2nd half of our programme will be centered on Trinidad &
Tobago. With music originating internationally and locally, the cast will tell various stories of who we are as
Trinbagonians. Three of our pieces in this segment of the show were arranged by another “old boy”, Mr. Desmond
Waithe. Desmond’s musical arrangements are woven together to bring out the true beauty of the original piece of music
and it has been a privilege working on them. You will enjoy hearing these pieces and so many other selections in this part
of the show. If at any point you feel the need to get up and dance, do so with my blessing!
It so happens that 2012 is a year with some other major anniversaries and the 1st half was crafted to celebrate these
anniversaries as well. The music of Broadway is entrenched in the hearts of many and four of the most famous musicals
of all time celebrate significant anniversaries this year. The musical Hairspray, known for its soulful gospel-like number I
Know Where I’ve Been and the intoxicating 60’s rhythm of its signature finale You Can’t Stop The Beat, celebrates its 10th
Anniversary. Having taken the world by storm back in 1997, The Lion King marks its 15th Anniversary. No one will ever
forget Circle of Life, the classic opening number celebrating the birth of the play’s protagonist and moved by the deep
tribal drums rooted in the heart of Africa. Les Misérables, though it made its debut in London in 1985, premiered on
Broadway two years later and so we celebrate its 25th Anniversary on Broadway this year. Tonight, we will remember 3
moving pieces from the play, At The End Of The Day, I Dreamed A Dream and One Day More. Finally, in honour of its 30th
Anniversary, you will hear the poignant ballad Memory from the ground-breaking musical, Cats. I am sure that you will
enjoy listening to these numbers just as much as the cast enjoyed rehearsing and love to perform them.
Before our Broadway Tribute segment however, we pay some more musical tributes. Inspired by the Music
festival victory of two of our students, Daniel Roberts & Matthew Wong Sang, we pay tribute to French composer
Maurice Ravel in this the 75th Anniversary of his death. Two of his works will be performed – firstly, Daniel and Matthew
will play their award winning rendition of Le Jardin Féerique after which, the band led by Ms. Myrtle Cumberbatch & Mrs.
Jane Carter, will deliver Boléro, one of Ravel’s most famous works.
We open Gifts of Blue & Gold 4 paying tribute to God in thanksgiving, praise and faith building. You will hear
some familiar classics such as Lean On Me, The Prayer and He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother. In addition, in honour of the
life of our dear Mr. Aloysius Bernard Joseph who recently passed away, the Fatima College Senior Choir will sing Things
That Never Die, a piece based on a Charles Dickens poem. Many would remember Mr. Joseph’s astute literary prowess
and I know he would appreciate a poem such as this. The song itself is a song of comfort and fits in to our tribute to God.
As one verse so movingly says “Let nothing pass for every hand must find some work to do. Lose not a chance to waken love. Be
firm and just and true, so shall a light that cannot fade beam on thee from on high and angel voices say to thee: these things can never
die, these things can never die”.
In this segment, we also feature significantly the ladies of Holy Name Convent, led by Rebecca Martinez, Marina
Gonsalves, Gabrielle Dempster and Akeyra Benjamin. Again, seeming to be the pieces of a perfect puzzle, Holy Name
Convent Port-of-Spain marks its 110th Anniversary since its establishment by French Dominican nuns in 1902. Thus, in
tribute, the girls sing Orphans of God a powerful piece lyrically and musically which reminds us that no matter who we
are, our God loves us. I would like to take this opportunity to especially thank Gabrielle Dempster as it was her idea to
have this song in the programme and know that though you leave Holy Name at the end of this academic year, your
years of commitment to Gifts of Blue & Gold will always be appreciated and remembered.
I pray that this year’s show will be just as awe-inspiring and just as captivating as its predecessors. Thank you for
your continued support and may God Bless you all!
