Owing to the war we lost the services of Capt. Forrett and Mr Heads (who was promoted to Captain on December 3rd). They both joined their Territorial Battalions on Mobilization. October 12th. News was received that J.W. Pape, Old Allanian, now serving with the Signal Company of the Royal Engineers, attached to the 2nd Army Headquarters of the Expeditionary Force, has been personally congratulated, and promoted to King’s Corporal by General Smith-Dorrien for gallantry in rescuing a wounded comrade under fire. October 12st. The London Gazette gave the information that W.R. Boiston, Old Allanian, had been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, for his part in the naval action off Heligoland. The extract from Admiral’s despatch reads: “William Rochester Boiston, engine-room artificer, who showed great ability and coolness in taking charge of the after boiler room (of H.M.S. “Laurel”) during the action when an explosion blew in the after funnel, and a shell carried away pipes and seriously damaged the main steam pipe.” November 1st. Edwin Victor Laidlow, Old Allanian, was killed in the London Scottish Charge at Messines, near Ypres. Although this is not the first instance of an Old Boy giving his life for his country, he is believed to be the first to be actually killed in action. Dame Allan’s Endowed Boys’ School Register 1915 p.4. SUMMER TERM April 30th. The Rev. A.L. Duncan left the School in order to take up his duties as Chaplain to the Forces. Colquhoun, W.E. Diskett, P.M. Laws, and J.B. Mennie, all 6th N.F., and H.W. Loffstadt, 4th N.., were wounded. p.5 May 24th. In an attack by the Germans, Captain Forrett, 5th N.F., and Captain Heads, 9th D.L.I., were both gassed, and had to be invalided home. July 22nd. End of Term. One day this month W.R. Boiston, Engine Room Artificer on H.M.S. Laurel, received his Distinguished Service Medal from the hands of the King at Buckingham Palace. MICHAELMASS TERM September 15th. During the holidays, Lieut. Pape, Signal Co., Royal Engineers, was accidentally killed in Egypt. It will be remembered that he was specially promoted for bravery in the early months of the war. December 10th. The boys sent 89 khaki handkerchiefs, together with a number of hand-made Christmas Cards, for the men of the 6th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers, now in France. They had previously sent out parcels ... at the request of F.W. Byrne, Old Allanian, now Reg. Captain P.D. Forrett was killed by a shell hitting his dug-out. His Colonel wrote, “He was an excellent officer, and we will miss him and his good work very very much”. March 21st. Mr W.S. Leete, the father of an old boy, Captain W.H. Leete, presented a large framed photograph of Captain Forrett to the School. The original was taken by Captain Leete “somewhere in France”. p.4 MICHAELMAS TERM September 13th. During the holidays Sergeant R.S. Robinson, Royal Fusiliers, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. During a very heavy bombardment he succeeded in digging out two men who were completely buried, although he was nearly buried himself two or three times by bursting bombs, and it was a unanimous request of the men, who did not even know his name, that he was recommended for the decoration. Captain J.E.B. Heads, who had been invalided home, on this occasion owing to an attack of trench fever, was married on July 31st. p.5 November 25th. Sec.-Lieut. John Kent, 9th Bat. Durham Light Infantry, was awarded the Military Cross. In the words of The London Gazette, “He led a raid with great courage and skill, himself going to the flank under intense fire, and withdrawing the covering party.
