Meet the Masters: This program helps the children learn about
different cultures through great Masters of Art. Students make all
different kinds of projects throughout the year. Volunteers are
needed to help with training and in-room class projects.
Health and Safety: Walk to School Day will be in September &
Ribbon Week will be held during various months of year. Child
Safety Week and a Bike Rodeo will be held in the Spring. We will
need volunteers to help with these activities. We will also be
asking for help with vision screening, hearing testing, and fluoride
rinses.
Gold Medal/Olympics: JR Smith is a Gold Medal School! This
program encourages students to walk during their lunch break and
to participate in fun games and activities. Volunteers are needed to
help once a week to stamp students hands as they walk the Gold
Medal Mile, track the student’s progress on a bulletin board and
distribute incentives to the students in their classrooms.
Corporate Sponsorships: Box Tops for Education, Ink Cartridge
Recycling, Cream O’ Weber lids, and Smith’s Earn and Learn.
Each of these programs raise money that goes directly to the
Character Education Program.
Classroom Volunteers: Check with your child’s teacher to see
how you can help in the classroom.
Reading Programs: STAR – “Star Tutoring Achievement for
Reading” This program depends on volunteers who are willing to
come in to the classroom for a ½ hour twice a week and read with
individual children. LITERACY MONTH: This program is held
in February and is a four week reading program. The children are
encouraged to read as much as they can during the four week
period. We will need volunteers to help track minutes, distribute
prizes, coordinate family reading nights, make posters and help
distribute reading slips to classrooms.
P.T. A. Sponsored Activities
Book Fair: We will be holding three Book Fairs during the year
in conjunction with SEP Conferences. The Book Fair is a
convenient way for you to shop for quality books for your children.
Volunteers are needed to help collect the money during these fairs.
Teacher Appreciation: This is an ongoing program throughout
the year, that allows us the opportunity to do something special for
our teachers and staff (birthdays, luncheons, etc…). Volunteer
your time or share your ideas to show our teachers we love them!
A.P.P.L.E. Club: Active Parents Participating in Learning
Experiences. Each term, students and parents complete specified
activities to become members of the APPLE Club and the student’s
name will be added to our bulletin board. The APPLE Parties will
be held 3 times during the year to promote family time. This
activity has been a great success and lots of fun. Volunteers are
needed to help with the activities and the bulletin board.
Reflections Program: Reflections is sponsored by the National
P.T.A. to encourage creativity through literature, music,
photography, visual arts, 3-D art, dance, film/video, and theater.
Work is judged according to grade divisions, creative ability and
interpretation of theme. This year’s theme is: “I Can Make a
Difference by . . . .” Volunteer to help with the kick –off
assembly, bulletin boards, promoting the program, finding judges,
and preparing our winning entries to go to Council.
Field Day: Field Day will be held for grades 1-3 and grades 4-5
during the month of May. They are on separate days. Volunteers
are needed to help run the activities.
Character Education: This District wide program will have a
monthly theme to help promote positive character traits. Volunteer
your time and ideas to make this program more effective at our
school.

THE PATHFINDER SONG
J.R. Smith Elementary School
I hope my pride is showing
Ever since I first met you
My mind has not stopped growing
J.R. Smith Elementary School
You keep the wheels turning
At J.R. Smith Elementary School
I’m learning to love learning
I am a Pathfinder I can explore
Each path I find leads to so many more
I know that my teachers care about me
And I can be anything I want to be
J.R. Smith Elementary School
I hope my pride is showing
Ever since I first met you
My mind has not stopped growing!
