Placement Exam: All students must take a placement exam outside of class prior to Monday, August 27, 2001. For
information on the placement exam see the following URL:
http://fym.la.asu.edu/placement/
This exam will emphasize required algebraic skills as well as assessing the student's general level of
current mathematical ability.
Assignments, Quizzes, and Projects: You are encouraged to work in groups on your assignments and projects.
No late assignments/projects will be accepted.
Quizzes may be either announced or unannounced, and are given at the discretion of the instructor.
Quizzes frequently reflect material that has recently been discussed in the class.
Retain all graded tests, assignments, quizzes, and projects up to the end of the semester.
Exam:
Three tests will be given during the semester. The best possible preparation for the exams is regular
attendance and completion of assigned homework. All three exams will be given in the Testing Center
(PSA - 21) on the dates indicated on the exam schedule. In order to be admitted to the testing center
each student must have a valid ASU "Sun Card" and an official testing label. Labels will be handed
out in class by the instructor prior to each exam. Your calculator program memory may be
randomly viewed during any exam and will be cleared if anything suspicious is written therein.
Makeup Tests:Will be given at the discretion of the instructor and only in the case of verified medical or other
emergency. The instructor must be notified before the exam is given. Call the instructor's office
(480-965-2254) or the Mathematics Department Office (480-965-3951) and leave a message.
Mastery test: The mastery test consists of problems testing basic skills on differentiation. You must pass
with a minimum score of 85%. You will be allowed up to three attempts for this exam to pass
at the 85% level. The dates for the test will be announced in class.
Calculators:
A graphing calculator is recommended. An internet and e-mail account is required for all students.
Calculators with QWERTY keyboards or those that do symbolic algebra, such as TI-89s, TI-92s,
Casio FX2 or 9970G’s cannot be used in class or during exams.
Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensive and will be administered in class. See the Fall 2001Schedule of
Classes for the Final Exam Schedule (Page 35).
Final Exam Policy: According to ASU policy, final exams can be rescheduled only under the following
circumstances:
1. religious conflict;
2. the student has more than three exams scheduled on the same day;
3. two finals are scheduled to occur at the same time;
If there is a last-minute personal or medical emergency, the student may receive a grade of Incomplete
and makeup the final within one calendar year. The student must provide written documentation and
be passing the class at the time to receive an Incomplete.
In particular, final exams cannot be rescheduled because of non-refundable airline tickets, family
gatherings, weddings, work schedules, or college convocation ceremonies associated with graduation.
Any exceptions to these rules must be approved by the Dean of the student's college.
Grade of Incomplete: A grade of incomplete, I, will be given only in the event that a documented emergency or
illness prevents a student who is otherwise doing acceptable work from completing a small
percentage of the course requirements.
