Animated Banner Brainstorming Worsksheet and Storyboard (50 Points)
Goal: Use Adobe PhotoShop to create an animated banner advertisement for the web.
The process of developing this project will follow the Engineering Design Process:
Step 1: Identify the need or problem
Step 2: Research the need or problem
Step 3: Develop possible solutions
Step 4: Select the best possible solutions
Step 5: Construct a prototype
Step 6: Test and evaluate the solutions.
Step 7: Communicate the Solutions.
Step 8: Redesign
Step 1:
Identify the need or problem: You are an account manager in the web department of an advertising agency.
Five companies have approached your advertising agency to advertise their products.
Pretend your group is an advertising agency. Normally, companies would come to you with a product that they
would like you to advertise for them. For this assignment you can CHOOSE the product you want to advertise.
Your first step is to brainstorm a list of possible products. You must choose products that have web sites with
images that are easily accessible. The item may NOT have anything to do with drugs, sex or alcohol, or
anything that is against school rules.
Products may be from the following categories: toys, clothing/accessories, food, cleaning products, electronics,
office supplies, movies, bands.
Include brand names (Bruegger’s Bagels, Snapple Iced Tea, Ecko Pants, Prince Spaghetti Sauce)

Step 2:
Research the need or problem: Identify and research the DEMOGRAPHICS of your product’s users.
My Product: ______________________________
Assignment:
1. Identify demographics which are your product’s typical consumers. For example, the typical Mountain Dew
drinker is a white, male, teenager, who likes extreme sports, wears loose fitting clothes, listens to Red Hot Chili
Peppers. To increase their market reach, Mountain Dew’s marketers might choose to target computer geeks,
elderly women, 9 year-old girls, or female lawyers, etc. with a television banner ad.
Brainstorm three possible demographics you could target for your banner ad.
Examples: See how specific these are? Include age, ethnicity, where they live, and a hobby or occupation.
45 year-old upper class Asian men who work on wall street and enjoy going to the opera
15 year-old white lower middle class girls who live in rural areas and who love Justin Bieber

Check the demographic you are going to target for your banner ad.
You may choose to target an audience that is NOT the typical user of your product. For example, you may
choose to sell Mountain Dew to 70 year old well-educated women who like to travel and knit.

audience.
An advertising appeal is when you connect your product to an emotion or value.
THESE APPEALS ARE VERY COMMON:

Snob appeal- Be better than everyone else
Youth appeal/Feel Younger- Feel like a kid again- buy this product.
Humor appeal- Most Super Bowl ads have humor appeals. Usually used for younger target audiences.
Ecology or Good for the Earth appeal- Be environmentally responsible and buy this product.
OR, you may choose to equate your product with a Value, Emotion, or Motive
Values-Tradition/convention, modernity, success, competitiveness/cooperation, individualism/communality, conformity,
independence, freedom, creativity, responsibility, roots, ecology, patriotism, health, cleanliness, youthfulness, vitality,
intelligence, maturity, fulfillment, good taste, sophistication or aesthetic sense, quality.
Emotions-Fear, hope, anxiety, love, distress, surprise, guilt, shame, interest, excitement, joy, anger, disgust, contempt or
loathing, sadness, happiness, amusement, peacefulness, grief, sorrow, trust, anticipation, depression, envy, frustration,
sympathy, loneliness, embarrassment, horror, dread, awe.
Motives- Power, sex, self-assertion, aggression, curiosity, pleasure, achievement/ambition, affiliation, imitation,
identification, desire for acceptance or approval/fear of rejection, status, prestige, dependency, friendship, concern,
certainty, meeting standards, security, protection, greed/acquisitiveness, self-indulgence, comfort, altruism, romance, fun,
relaxation,self-worth, esteem, adventure, economy, glamour or luxury, to be fashionable/smart, to feel in touch with
nature.
Which of the above advertising appeals that would work for your target audience?
Since your banner will be less than 10 seconds long, you will only have time to focus on one, so check the one
that works best for your product and audience.
