MATERIALS:
 “Vocabulary Strategy: Word Structure” handout (1 per person)
 Word parts handout with columns (1 per table)
 One note card with a list of eight words (1 per group)
 Notepaper (1 per person)
 Vocabulary Workshop book (1 per person)
DIRECTIONS:
STEP 1 – In groups, each individual will complete this step on a piece
of notebook paper. You are to divide each of the eight words on the note
card into word parts. Try to make sense of the word by breaking it up into
its parts. Some words have two parts, some have three.
For example – contestant is divided into con – prefix meaning together, test
– root word meaning exam, and ant – suffix meaning one who
STEP 2 – After the words are divided into their parts with appropriate
definitions, then write out the definition for the whole word.
For example – contestant therefore means one who comes together to take
a test of some sort or one who participates in an exam or test.
STEP 3 – Once your group has completed steps 1and 2 you may get
yourselves Vocabulary Workshop books (orange books on shelf in back).
Each individual will number their papers from 1 to 8. DO NOT WRITE IN
THE BOOKS. Go to the page number on your note card. Complete this
assignment by finding the correct word to fill in the blank. There are
definition hints above the sentence. See if your definition came close to the
books definition.
