Reference Books
Reference books can be used to give you hints about
where to go for more information, not just the article in the
reference book itself = bibliographies! You may also find
that you need a reference book to help get you started
with some basic background information (names, dates,
etc).
TYLER/NOVELS (The Accidental Tourist; Ladder of
Years):
Anne Tyler: a critical companion
Ref PS3570 .Y45 Z56 1998
Humanities Index
Humanities Index identifies article citations from scholarly
journals in Humanities disciplines.
Look your topic up, then read through the citations for any
that might be relevant.
Remember that you will need to find out if Truxal Library
owns the journal that you need – use the Periodicals List
to look up the name of the journal.
Expanded Academic

Expanded Academic Index is a computer database that
contains the text of select articles.
Only those articles identified as TEXT are actually the
entire article; items with only an ABSTRACT of
EXTENDED CITATION may be available in the Library or
you may have to use another library or request an interlibrary loan.
Use the Library homepage to access LIBRARY
DATABASES then go to ARTICLE DATABASES, and
then go to Expanded Academic. Search examples:

Web Sites
For the right topic, the Internet can provide some useful
resources – unfortunately there is very little in the way of
good quality material concerned with Tyler’s novel out on
the web.

remember to exercise some caution & evaluate the
resources carefully!
Places to try some Internet searches:
Yahoo!

Newspapers are more likely to contain book reviews,
rather than literary analysis or criticism.
Literary Databases
Literary databases can be accessed via the Library
homepage. These databases are available both oncampus and off-campus. There are actually three
databases available; however, only the Literature
Resource Center databases will be useful to locate
information about Tyler or The Accidental Tourist.
Search by author:
Search by title:
TYLER ANNE
THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST
You may want to specify both the author and title, as this
will help to narrow your search results.
NOTE: Some of the material in this database is just an
electronic equivalent of its print counterparts –
Contemporary Authors and Dictionary of Literary
Biography will provide biographical information about a
given author; Contemporary Literary Criticism Select
provides excerpts, not the whole article/essay, of
criticisms, Novels for Students provides brief analysis of a
work. You should use these to help you better understand
the author in question and his/her works. Remember to
look for bibliographies at the end of these articles.
Ask at the Reference Desk for help when you need it, or
set up a one-on-one appointment with a Librarian!
