MEDICATION POST-OP PROTOCOLS-2015
Description: The post-operative medication area of the clinic serves to supply
medication, education, and counseling to pre- and post-operative clinic patients.
Medication orders are selected by licensed Doctors of Dental Surgery (DDS), and
Doctors of Dental Medicine (DMD). Registered Pharmacists serve as professional
agents of the DDS and DMD. The main responsibility of pharmacists is to provide pre
and post- operative medication care to clinic patients. Pharmacists will provide
medications to patients and provide education and counseling for all medications
ordered by the dentists.
1. Pharmacists will be responsible for counseling patients on the following
medications.

Amoxicillin 250mg – 1 po tid x 7d - #21
Amoxicillin 500mg – 1 po tid x 7d - #21
Clindamycin 150mg – 1 tid x 7d - #21
Ibuprofen 200mg – 2 po q4-6h prn pain - #20
Acetaminophen 500 mg - 1-2 po q4-6h prn pain - #20

2. No controlled substances will be provided or prescribed by the dentist.
3. On the order form, if the area  Other: is checked and a medication is printed
in space, see the pharmacy lead for instructions.
4. Please draw a line through the medication order once completed and initial and
date.
5. Please PRINT on the patient charts – DO NOT USE ABBREVIATIONS
6. Only BLUE pens should be used on patient charts – NO BLACK ink.
7. After patients have been counseled and received their discharged medications,
patients should then be escorted to the final exit interview waiting area. All
patients must have completed the final exit interview.

8. If you have an emergency, there are EMT services on site. Stay with the patient,
send your assistant to alert the department head who will immediately radio for
an EMT. Either you or your assistant should hold up the EMT station card so the
EMT can quickly identify where to go once they have been radioed.
9. If you are exposed to blood, immediately notify the department lead who will
follow the needle stick/sharp instrument protocol.
10. Please stagger your lunch breaks. While you are on break, another dentist may
move into your chair so patient flow isn’t disrupted.
