May Mental Health Month Did you know May is mental health month? One out of every five children has a mental health issue. So, what are we talking about? We are talking about anxiety, depression, and bi-polar disorders. Typically more than half of these young people do not get the help they need. Why? Mental illness is not as easily detected as some physical ailment like a fever or open wound. Depression and anxiety can happen to anyone. CAUSES Environmental Cause -- Exposure to violence, a death, physical or psychological abuse, neglect. Biological Cause -- A chemical imbalance, damage to the central nervous system (head or brain injury). What can parents do? Persis Avoid Chang patter Low e Incre Thoug Be aware of the signs and symptoms Seek medical evaluation from your physician Ask about different types of treatment available Support therapy and treatment Early diagnosis and treatment is important when faced with any mental health issue. Children should be referred to a licensed professional for treatment. Treatment may include individual counseling, family or group counseling, or even medication therapy. It is very important to understand that if medication therapy is used, adjusting or discontinuing medication must be done under the supervision of a physician.
