May
Mental Health Month
Did you know May is mental health month? One out of every five children
has a mental health issue. So, what are we talking about? We are talking
about anxiety, depression, and bi-polar disorders. Typically more than half
of these young people do not get the help they need. Why? Mental illness is
not as easily detected as some physical ailment like a fever or open wound.
Depression and anxiety can happen to anyone.
CAUSES
Environmental Cause -- Exposure to violence,
a death, physical or psychological abuse, neglect.
Biological Cause -- A chemical imbalance,
damage to the central nervous system (head or

 Be aware of the signs and symptoms
 Seek medical evaluation from your
physician
 Ask about different types of
treatment available
 Support therapy and treatment
Early diagnosis and treatment is important when faced with any
mental health issue. Children should be referred to a licensed
professional for treatment. Treatment may include individual
counseling, family or group counseling, or even medication
therapy. It is very important to understand that if medication
therapy is used, adjusting or discontinuing medication must be
done under the supervision of a physician.
