Rotate the unit until the speaker outlet, a small, slightly rough grid of holes near the top edge, is away from you. You can also find the top edge by feeling for the lanyard anchor point - this is a small prominent hoop on one end of the unit. In order to help with correct identification of the controls, keep the device in this position whilst reading the information below. Front face At the top of the front face is the grill covering the internal speaker. The surface of the grill feels slightly rougher than the rest of the surface. On the rest of the front face there are 18 control buttons. Immediately below the speaker grill, and in the centre of the unit left to right, is the Date and Time button. This is an oblong button, about 1 cm long, with a prominent narrow ridge along its length. It is used for speaking the date and time both when the unit is on or off. Below the Date and Time button are the 4 navigation buttons, arranged around a fifth, more prominent, button. The 4 buttons are the Up, Down, Left and Right buttons and the button in the centre is the Menu button. The navigation buttons each have a small tactile triangular mark pointing outwards. The Menu button has a prominent tactile rectangle around its outer edge and a letter "M" in its centre. Below the navigation buttons, and separated by a narrow tactile ridge, is a number pad laid out in the standard telephone keypad fashion. On the number pad, the button levels are alternately raised or sunken to make them easier to locate. The Number 5 button also has a tactile dot to aid its identification. The red button at the bottom left of the number pad is the Cancel button and the green button at the bottom right is the OK button. Below the Cancel button is the battery status LED and below the OK button is the internal microphone. Top edge In the centre of the top edge is the lanyard anchor point. This is a prominent metal hoop which protrudes from the surface of the rest of the top edge and is used for securing the neck lanyard. To the left of this is a 3.5mm stereo socket which acts as both the microphone socket and line in socket. To the right of the lanyard anchor point, and marked with a narrow tactile ridge behind it, is a 3.5mm stereo headphone socket. 3 Bottom edge On the bottom edge, there are two connectors. On the left is the socket for connecting the mains power supply and on the right is the mini USB socket for connecting to a PC or other compatible USB device. The USB socket can also be used for charging the unit via a computer. Left edge On the left edge there are 3 buttons and an SD card slot. The top most button is the rectangular Mode button which is used to switch between the available playback modes. Pressing this button repeatedly will cycle through the various options. The options offered will depend on which model of BookSense is being used. The 2 rectangular buttons below the Mode button are the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons respectively. Near to the bottom of the unit, below the Volume Down button, is the SD card slot. Right edge On the right edge, there are 3 buttons and a switch. Nearest to the top of the unit is the rectangular Play button. This is used for turning the unit on and off and also to start and pause playback when the unit is on. Below the Play button is a rectangular button with several small tactile ridges on it. This is the Record button. Below the Record button and near to the centre of the right edge, is a rectangular sliding switch. It has a single tactile ridge across its centre. Pushing this switch towards the top of the unit unlocks the BookSense and pushing it towards the bottom of the unit locks it, preventing any accidental button presses. This switch is called the Hold switch. Approximately half way between the Hold switch and the bottom of the unit is a very small hole containing the reset button. If the unit will not respond to any commands, this button can be used to reset the unit. It is also used when performing a hard reset. Alternatively, the battery can be removed and replaced. Note: If you remove the battery, you must wait for around 10 seconds before refitting it into the unit. Back face On the back face there is only one item of note. In the centre, near to the top of the unit, is the battery release catch. Pulling the catch towards the top of the unit 4 at the same time as lifting the top edge of the battery, should release the battery from its housing. Getting started Now you have an idea of the physical layout of your new BookSense, you can start to learn how to use it. This chapter looks at how to connect and charge the battery, how to switch the unit on and off, how to get help and how to prevent accidental button presses. Inserting and removing the battery. When you receive the BookSense, the battery will not be connected. This section describes how to fit the battery properly and, if necessary, how to remove it. To fit the battery, follow these steps: Remove the BookSense and the battery from all packaging. Hold the BookSense face down in the palm of your hand, with the top away from you. Identify the bottom edge of the battery by feeling for the two prominent notches at one end. Alternatively, you can identify the top and bottom edge by feeling the outer corners. At the bottom, the corners are more rounded than they are on the top two corners. The outside of the battery is smooth and has the HIMS company logo embossed in the centre. With the outside of the battery uppermost, carefully place the bottom edge of the battery into the bottom edge of the BookSense. They should fit together easily and no force should be required. Carefully press down the top corners of the battery and it should click into position with the battery release catch locking it into place at the top edge of the battery. As batteries will generally be shipped with some residual charge, it is likely that your BookSense will boot up automatically at this stage. Normally this takes around 20-30 seconds and you will hear a musical jingle when this is complete. If no sound is heard, it may simply mean that your battery does not have sufficient residual charge and that the unit needs to be connected to the mains. See the next section in this chapter for information on how to do this. Removing the battery Hold the BookSense face down in the palm of your hand. Pull the battery release catch towards the top of the unit. With your other hand, grip the sides of the top end of the battery and pull gently upwards. If you feel carefully, you should find a small finger tip groove on each side of the battery, near the top edge. These are designed to assist you to grip the battery firmly. The battery should lift clear with no excessive force being necessary. 5 Using your BookSense for the first time. In order to use your BookSense for the first time, you will need to connect it to a mains power supply using the supplied AC adaptor. This will take the unit out of its shipping mode. Connect the AC adaptor into a standard power socket and the other end of the cable into the power socket at the bottom left corner of the BookSense. Switch on the mains power. After around 20 seconds, the unit will turn itself on and you should hear a musical jingle which indicates that the BookSense is ready for use. Charging the battery. There are two ways to charge the BookSense, by using the supplied AC adaptor or by connecting the BookSense to a PC using the USB socket. Both methods are described in this section. To charge the unit using the AC adaptor, connect the AC adaptor into a mains power socket and the other end into the power socket at the bottom left corner of the BookSense. Switch on the mains power and the unit will start to charge. A full charge should take around 2.5 hours. To charge the BookSense using a PC, first connect the small end of the supplied long USB cable into the mini USB socket at the bottom right corner of the unit. Then connect the other end of the cable into your PC. If the BookSense is turned on, a full charge will take around 10 hours. If the BookSense is turned off, a full charge will take around 5 hours. In both the above situations, whilst charging, the LED below the Cancel button will shine red and when charging is complete, the LED will shine green. When charging is complete, a spoken message will also be heard. Turning the BookSense on and off. To turn on the BookSense, press and hold down the Play button for 2 seconds. This is located at the top right of the unit. You should hear a musical jingle followed by an announcement of which media is being accessed. This will vary depending on which media you were using in the previous session. To turn off the BookSense, press and hold down the Play button for 2 seconds. You will hear a musical jingle and the unit will then turn itself off. Using the menu system. Many of the BookSense features make use of the built in menu system, therefore an early understanding of how to use it properly is important. This section details how to navigate the menu structure and how to use the various menu elements. 6 Throughout the rest of this manual, in order to keep the instructions as brief as possible, it is assumed that you understand this detail. It is worth noting that the options within the menu system change according to which mode is currently in use. In other words, the menu offered for the "Media" mode is different from that of the "DAISY" mode and so on. There are, however, 3 items which appear on all menus. These are "Global options", "Help mode" and "Advanced menu". The detail of these will be discussed later. As you navigate around the menu, the built in speech will announce the name and type of the currently selected item. Similar to a computer menu, there are several types of element as follows: Standard menu items. BookSense will speak the item name with no additional information. Items with sub menus. BookSense will speak the item name and then say "Pull down". Items that link to dialogue boxes. BookSense will speak the item name and then say "Dialogue". Edit boxes. BookSense will speak an appropriate message and then say "Edit box". Combo boxes. BookSense will speak an appropriate message and then say "Combo box". A brief explanation of the menu elements mentioned is given below: Dialogue box: This is a menu feature in which 1 or more settings can be altered. The items in a dialogue box can be combo boxes or edit boxes or a mixture of these. Combo box: A combo box allows you to make a choice from a number of predetermined settings. For example, the combo box which allows you to choose a preferred sampling rate for recording, will list the options that are available. You use the Left or Right button to make your selection but you cannot type in data yourself. Edit box: An edit box in the BookSense is a place where you can enter numerical information such as a date, time, page number and so on. You can use the Cancel button to delete the number you entered last and you can use the Left or Right buttons to move through data to check your entry. The following commands apply for general menu navigation: To access the menu, press and release the Menu button. To select the next or previous menu item, use the Up or Down buttons. To select a menu item or to open a sub menu, press the Right button, the OK button or the Menu button. To move from a sub menu to a higher level menu, press the Left button. To exit the menu system, press the Cancel button. 7 Note: Some menu items do not have sub menus or dialogue boxes. Pressing the Right button, OK button or Menu button on this type of item will execute its function. Note: Using the navigation buttons within menus, dialogue boxes and combo boxes will loop round the items in turn. The following commands apply for navigating within dialogue boxes: To select the next or previous dialogue box item, press the Up or Down buttons. To change a combo box setting, within a dialogue box, use the Left or Right buttons. To save the current settings and to close a dialogue box, press the OK button or the Menu button. To close a dialogue box without saving the settings, press the Cancel button. The following commands apply in edit boxes: To enter data in an edit box, use the buttons on the number pad. To review data in an edit box, use the Left or Right buttons. To delete data in an edit box, use the Cancel button. When the last data has been deleted, a beeping sound will be heard. To close and save the current settings, press the OK button or the Menu button. To close an edit box without saving, press the Cancel button repeatedly until a beeping sound is heard and then press the Cancel button one more time. This may be a single button press or multiple presses depending on the status at the time. Help mode. Before you start to learn about the main features of the BookSense, it is worth knowing how to get help as you are learning. Whichever media you are using, BookSense provides a built in help mode. As the function of the buttons varies depending on which media you are using, there is a lot to learn and this is a very useful feature to know about. To turn on Help Mode, press and hold down the Menu button for 2 seconds. The unit will say "Open help mode". If you now press any button, BookSense will give you information on the function of that button for the media you are using at that time. To turn off Help Mode, press and hold down the menu button for 2 seconds. The unit will say "Close help mode" and it will return to normal operation. Note: An alternative way to turn on Help Mode is to press the Menu button once quickly to go into the main menu. Then press the Up or Down buttons until you get to the "Help mode" option. Select it by pressing the Menu button once more or by pressing the OK button or Right button. 8 The hold switch. At times you may wish to lock the controls of the BookSense to avoid accidentally operating the unit. This can be done by using the Hold Switch. Reminder: The Hold Switch is the third item down from the top on the right edge of the unit. To lock the unit, slide the Hold Switch towards the bottom of the unit. If the unit is on, it will say "Locked". If it is off, it will remain silent. To unlock the unit, slide the Hold Switch towards the top of the unit. If the unit is on, it will say "Unlocked". If it is off, it will remain silent. Note: Locking the unit will prevent any button being operated including the Play button and the Date/Time button. The Date/Time button is normally able to be used even when the unit is turned off. Quick start instructions. If you wish to get started quickly with your BookSense, you may find this chapter of help. This chapter looks at how to insert and remove SD cards and USB devices. It also looks in more detail at the folder structure created on the inserted media. Inserting and removing an SD card. To insert an SD card, follow these steps: Hold the BookSense with the front face upwards and the top edge away from you. The SD card slot should be on the left edge, near to the bottom of the unit. Identify the leading edge of the SD card. One corner of the SD card is cut at a 45 degree angle. With the short sides of the card leading, the cut corner should be at the top right when you insert the SD card into the card slot. If the card is not properly aligned, it will not fit into the unit. Gently push the card into the slot until it clicks into place. Do not use excessive force. Only slight pressure is required to lock the SD card in the slot. The outer edge of the card should be flush with the outside of the unit. If the unit is turned on at this time, you will hear a double musical tone to confirm that it has been recognised. To remove the card, follow these steps: Gently push the card into the card slot and then release it. The card will pop out of the slot enough for you to grip it and pull it out completely. If the BookSense is on at this time, a popping sound should be heard to confirm that the unit has detected the removal of the SD card. Store your card in a suitable place for safe keeping. Inserting and removing a USB memory/CD-ROM device. The BookSense can be connected to a USB memory device or to a compatible USB CD-ROM drive. However, when connecting a CD-ROM device, the content on the CD media must be in DAISY format otherwise it will not be recognised. This section details how to connect and disconnect these devices. To connect a USB memory device or USB CD-ROM drive, follow these steps: 12 Connect the USB memory device or the cable from the USB CD-ROM device into the supplied short adaptor cable. This converts the standard USB connector to a mini USB sized connector. Connect the small end of the adaptor cable into the mini USB port at the bottom right corner of the BookSense. After a short wait, a double musical tone should be heard, indicating that the USB device has been recognised. To remove a USB memory device or a USB CD-ROM device, simply disconnect the cables. If the unit is turned on at this time, a popping sound will be heard to indicate that the BookSense has recognised that it has been removed. Folders created by the BookSense. When the BookSense first accesses any media that it has not accessed previously, or if the media has been reformatted, it will automatically create a series of 6 or 7 folders, 6 for the T50 and 7 for the T50XT. This section details what folders are created and the types of content that should be stored in them. It also details which folders are accessed by the available operating modes. The automatically created folders are as follows: Audio books: This folder should contain non-DAISY audio books and other audio files. You can create sub folders within this folder to make filing more logical. The folder is accessed in "Media" mode. DAISY: This folder should only contain DAISY content with each DAISY title being stored in its own folder. Sub folders are not permitted. The folder is accessed in "DAISY" mode. Documents: This folder should contain textual files that require to be read using the built-in synthetic speech. Further information on the file formats that can be accessed is given in the chapter "Document reader mode". Sub folders can be used. The folder is accessed in "Document reader" mode. Music: This folder is for storing music albums and tracks. Sub folders can be used. The folder is accessed in "Media" mode. Podcasts: This folder should contain podcasts you have downloaded from the internet. It can contain sub folders. The folder is accessed in "Media" mode. Radio (T50XT only): This folder is used for storing recordings of live radio broadcasts. Sub folders can be used. The folder is accessed in "Media" mode. Record: This folder is used to store voice recordings or recordings made using the line-in facility. Sub folders can be used. The folder is accessed in "Media" mode. A summary of the folders accessed in each operating mode is given below: Media mode accesses the 'AUDIO BOOKS', 'MUSIC', 'PODCASTS', 'RADIO' AND RECORD' folders. DAISY mode only accesses the 'DAISY' folder. Document Reader mode only accesses the 'DOCUMENTS' folder. 13 Radio mode (T50XT only) uses the built in FM radio and accesses the 'RADIO' folder when recording from a live radio broadcast. Note: For the BookSense to recognise your content properly, it must be stored in the correct folder. Connecting to a PC. To connect the BookSense to your PC, connect one end of the supplied long USB cable to the mini USB port on the bottom right corner of the unit, and the other end to a spare USB port on your PC. If the BookSense is not already turned on, turn it on now. The BookSense will say "Connected to USB" and, after a short delay, Windows will recognize the available drives. In the T50, it will recognise the SD card only. In the T50XT, it will recognise the BookSense flashdisk and the SD card as separate drives. In both cases, the SD card will be recognised as a USB drive and will be listed as "Removable disk" or by the SD card label if one has been specified. If the SD card is not inserted, it will not be displayed. For the T50XT, the internal flashdisk will be listed as "BookSense". Once Windows has correctly identified the hardware, you can then use Windows Explorer or My Computer to transfer files back and forth. When you access the detected drives, you will notice that the following folders will have been automatically created: 'AUDIO BOOKS', 'DAISY', 'DOCUMENTS', 'MUSIC', 'PODCASTS', 'RADIO' (T50XT only) and 'RECORD'. As you use the BookSense, additional folders named 'MARKS' AND 'PLAYLIST' may be added. For example, if you enter a mark in a DAISY title, a folder called 'MARKS' will be created within the 'DAISY' folder. Until you understand their purpose, you should avoid adding, deleting or editing files in these folders as they are used by the BookSense. The folder structure will be discussed in more detail in a later section. Note: When you connect your BookSense to your PC for the first time, you may need to wait for 10-20 seconds for the drives to be recognised by Windows. Subsequently this process will be much quicker. Note: When connected to a PC, the BookSense cannot be used in its normal fashion as it is simply behaving as an external drive for the PC. You will also not be able to turn the unit off without first disconnecting it from the PC. Note: Charging via the USB port will start automatically. To disconnect the BookSense from a PC, first use the "Safely remove hardware" feature in Windows to ensure that no file transfers are still taking place. Then simply disconnect the two ends of the long USB cable. The BookSense will say "Disconnected from USB" and it will return to where you were prior to connecting to the PC. 14 Configuring the BookSense. Before using the BookSense, you may wish to configure the system options including the date and time and the synthetic speech settings. This chapter details how this is done. Setting and reviewing the date and time. The BookSense has a built in clock and alarm facility. This section only details how to set and check the system date and time. The alarm facility is dealt with in a later section. Reminder: As this section makes use of the built in menu system, you may wish to review the Section "Using the menu system" before proceeding. This details how to navigate the menu structure and how to access the various elements within the menu structure. To set the date and time, follow these steps: Press and release the Menu button. Use the Up or Down button to go to the "Global options" item and select it. This will open a sub menu. Use the Up or Down button to go to the "Date and time settings" item and select it. In the 16 T50XT, this will not work in Radio mode as the Number 5 button is allocated to one of the radio presets. Operating features common to all modes. There are a number of BookSense features which are common to all the playback modes. This chapter shows you how to select the preferred storage device and playback mode, how to navigate the folder structure and how to use the basic playback features. Selecting the storage device to be used. The BookSense will allow you to select between the available storage devices. For the T50 you will have the choice of using the SD card or a USB device. The T50XT has the additional option of the flash memory (4GB internal). To select a preferred storage device, follow these steps: Press the Menu button once to go into the menu system. Use the Up or Down button to go to the "Global options" item and select it. This will open the sub menu. Use the Up or Down button to go to the "Set current storage device" item and select it. This will open a combo box. Use the Left or Right button to select which storage device you wish to access. Finally, to save your selection and exit the menu system, press the OK button or the Menu button. Note: Only the storage devices which are currently connected will be listed in the combo box. Note: If you are at the folder/file level and not in playback or pause mode, you can also switch quickly between the available storage devices by pressing and holding down the Number 0 button for more than 2 seconds. Note: When you switch to a different storage device, the playback mode stays the same. For example, if you are in DAISY mode and accessing the SD card, when you switch to USB or the flash disk, BookSense will stay in DAISY mode. Switching between available playback modes. The T50 has 3 playback modes which are "Media", "DAISY" and "Document Reader". The T50XT has the additional mode of "Radio". To switch sequentially through these modes, press the Mode button repeatedly until you reach the desired mode. The Mode button is the top most button on the left edge of the unit. As BookSense switches to a different mode, the mode name will be announced. Note: As you switch to each mode, the list of available folders will be accessed automatically and a summary of the folder contents will be announced. 17 Note: When you switch back to a mode that you have used previously, the BookSense will return to the item that you used last in that mode. Navigating files and folders. In Media mode, DAISY mode or Document Reader mode, the BookSense allows you to navigate through the folders and files that have been placed in the folders on the storage devices. This section demonstrates how to navigate the folder structures and how to get information about the size of files and folders. In Media mode, the file list is called the "Audio list", in DAISY mode it is called the "Contents list" and in Document Reader mode it is called the "Document list". The following commands apply for navigating all of these: Move to next file or folder, press the Down button. Move to the previous file or folder, press the Up button. Open a sub folder, press the Right button. Exit from a sub folder to the parent folder, press the Left button. Play file, press the Play button or the OK button. For larger files, there may be a short delay whilst the file is loaded for playback. Beeps will be heard at this time. Move to the top of the file or folder list, press the Number 3 button. Move to the bottom of the file or folder list, press the Number 6 button. Move up 5 items in the file or folder list, press the Number 1 button. Move down 5 items in the file or folder list, press the Number 4 button. Move up 10 items in the file or folder list, press the Number 2 button. Move down 10 items in the file or folder list, press the Number 5 button. Select all files in a list (only available in Media mode), press the Number 7 button. Select or unselect a file in a list (only available in Media mode), press the Number 9 button. Cancel all selected lists (only available in Media mode), press the Cancel button. Speak file or folder size information for currently selected file or folder, press the Number 0 button once. In DAISY mode the title of the selected item is spoken not the folder name. Deleting files or folders. To delete a file or folder, follow these steps: Move to the file or folder you wish to delete. Press the Number 8 button. BookSense will ask you to confirm that you wish to delete the item you have selected and will automatically highlight the "Yes" option. If you wish to proceed with the deletion, press the OK button or the Menu button. Shortly afterwards, the deletion will be confirmed. 18 If you wish to cancel the deletion, press the Left or Right button to highlight the "No" option and then press the OK button or the Menu button. Alternatively, you can press the Cancel button - this will also cancel the deletion process. Start, stop and pause playback. Once you have selected a file or folder you wish to play, press the OK button or the Play button to start playback. When an item is playing, press the Play button and playback will be paused. Pressing the Play button again will restart the audio. With the T50XT in Radio mode, pressing the Play button whilst listening to a radio station, will mute the radio output. If you wish to exit from playing an item, press the Cancel button and the unit will exit to the source folder. Changing the playback volume. The BookSense has separate volume settings for the built in stereo speakers and for headphones. This section describes how to adjust the settings for both. Adjust the volume setting as follows: If you wish to adjust the volume of the built in speakers, ensure that headphones are not connected. If you wish to adjust the headphone volume, ensure that a set of headphones is connected to the headphone socket on the top edge of the unit. In both cases, use the Volume Up button to increase the volume and the Volume Down button to decrease the volume by one increment on the scale 1 to 21. The default setting is 15. If you adjust the volume during playback, the volume will change but no announcement of the level will be heard. However, a beep will be heard when the default setting is reached. If you adjust the volume when playback is stopped or paused, an announcement of the selected level will be heard. No beep will be heard at the default setting level. Changing the playback speed. In Media mode, DAISY mode and Document Reader mode, the speed of the playback can be adjusted. Although the range of options varies slightly, the method of changing the speed up or down is identical for all of these modes. During playback or in pause mode, to adjust the playback speed, follow these steps: Increase the speed by pressing the Number 6 button once. The speed will increase by 1 increment for each button press. During playback, the speed will be heard increasing but the speed level will not be announced. Whilst playback is paused, the speed levels will be spoken. 19 Reset the speed to the default speed by pressing the Number 5 button once. During playback, a beep will be heard. Whilst playback is paused, the default level will be spoken. Decrease the speed by pressing the Number 4 button once. The speed will decrease by 1 increment for each button press. During playback, the speed will be heard decreasing but the speed level will not be announced. Whilst playback is paused, the speed levels will be spoken. Note: In Media mode and DAISY mode, the speed can be adjusted on the scale 2 to 4 with 0 being the default setting. In Document Reader mode, the speed can be adjusted on the scale 1 to 21 with the default setting being 7. Note: For text only DAISY titles, the range of speed settings is the same as for Document Reader mode (1 to 21) because the speech output is generated by the same built in text to speech system. Note: If the sample rate of the current file is over 44.1MHz, the playback pitch might vary up or down while playing MP4 or OGG files. Pitch changing can occur, regardless of the sample rate, if you change the playing speed whilst playing WMV files. Note: The playback speed cannot be adjusted in Radio mode in the T50XT. Selecting an available navigation option. In all playback modes apart from Radio mode, it is possible to select from a list of navigation options. The available options will vary from mode to mode and, in the case of the DAISY mode, from title to title, depending on the structure offered in each DAISY book. However, the method of accessing these navigation options is identical for all modes. During playback or in pause mode, to review the available navigation options for a given file, use the Up or Down buttons. All currently available navigation options will be spoken in turn. At the top or bottom of the list, the selection will loop round. Once you have selected the type of navigation you want, use the Left or Right buttons to move backwards or forwards through the file by your selected amount. Note: The available list of options may change for any file if the status has changed. For example, if no marks are defined for the file, no "Mark" item will appear. If marks have been defined, an option to navigate by marks will be available. Checking the system status information. At times you may wish to check the system status. This section shows you how to check the battery status, the free space on the storage devices, the firmware version and the key number for your unit. To access the system status dialogue box, follow these steps: Press the Menu button once to go into the menu system. 20 Use the Up or Down button to go to the "Global options" item and select it. This will open the sub menu. Use the Up or Down button to go to the "Check system status" item and select it. This will open a dialogue box. Use the Up or Down buttons to move through the various system status items. When you have finished reviewing the details, press the OK button, the Menu button or the Cancel button to close the dialogue box and exit the menu system. Within the dialogue box, the first item will be the battery status. This is represented by a number between 1 and 10 where 10 is fully charged. If the unit is connected to mains power at this time, the BookSense will say "Battery charging. Using AC power". If the unit is charging via the USB port, no announcement will be heard and the only way to get an idea of the battery status is by checking the power LED under the Cancel button. It will be green if it is fully charged and red if it is still charging. Note: An alternative way to check the battery status is to press and hold down the OK button for 2 seconds. The next items list the free space and total space for each of the available storage devices. Only the storage space details for the currently connected storage devices will be listed. The last two items in the list are "Firmware version" and "Key number". Media mode. This chapter covers features that are specific to playing audio files. Supported formats in Media mode. In Media mode, the following formats are supported: MP3 MP4 OGG WAV WMV FLAC WMA ASF Audible audio(.aa and .aax) Selecting and playing Audio Files. Reminder: As much of the file navigation detail is not repeated here, you may wish to review the section "Navigating files and folders" before continuing. 21 To use media content, you must first switch to the Media mode by pressing the Mode button repeatedly until "Media" is spoken. In Media mode, you can select either an individual file or a folder to play. The main points to note are as follows: Once you have selected the file or folder you wish to play, press the Play button or the OK button to load it and start playback. Press the Play button during playback to pause the audio and press the Play button again to restart playback. If you select a folder to play, all the files within this folder will be played. In order to be able to skip through tracks, you must first select the folder that contains the files you wish to play, or go into the folder and select the individual files that you want. If you wish to stop playing the current file/track, press the Cancel button to exit and return to the audio list. Note: If a file is longer than 10 minutes in length, playback will start at the position where it was playing previously. If the file is shorter than 10 minutes, playback will start at the beginning of the file. Getting file information. It is often useful to be able to get information about the current file or folder. This section details how to get information about the playing time and about the file itself. Getting file playing time information. To get information about the current playing position, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 0 button. BookSense will speak the file name, the elapsed time and the total playing time. It will also state which file is being played from a folder in the form "XX of YY", where XX is the file number and YY is the total number of files in the folder. Lastly it will announce the playing status. When complete, BookSense will return to playback or pause mode. Note: You can stop the information being spoken by pressing the Cancel button at any time during the announcement. Getting file tag information. If you wish to view the current file's tag information, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press and hold down the Number 0 button for 2 seconds. BookSense will open the Media Info dialogue box which can be navigated one element at a time. The items listed are the title of the file, the name of the artist, the album name and the genre. 22 Use the Up or Down buttons to review each item in turn. You can also check the detail more carefully by using the Left or Right buttons on each item. When you have finished with the dialogue box, press the Cancel button or the OK button to close it and return to playback or pause mode. Navigating in Media mode. This section details how to use the navigation options which are available in Media mode. There are 4 main methods, all of which are very similar in the way they are used. Available navigation options. In most files, the following options will be available: 1 track 5 tracks First or last track Time Note: "1 Track" is the default navigation option in Media mode. Note: In Audible books, an additional option of "Section" will be listed. Moving by 1 track. In Media mode, The BookSense allows you to jump through files in time jumps of 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes and 1 hour. This section shows you how to use the time jump option and how to select your desired time jump increment. To move back or forwards by the currently set time increment, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Up or Down buttons to select the "Time" option. Now use the Left or Right buttons to jump backwards or forwards by the specified time increment. To cycle through the available time increments, press the Number 9 button repeatedly until you hear the setting you require. Using the procedure above will now jump the playing position backwards or forwards by the newly selected time increment. Note: The default time increment setting is "5 Seconds". Moving by percentage. In addition to the above methods of navigating your files, in Media mode, you can also opt to navigate by percentage. For example, if your file was 100 minutes long and you wanted to go to the 35 minute point, you could navigate to the 35% position in the file. To navigate by percentage, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 8 button. The current playing position in percentage will be announced along with a prompt to enter the percentage that you want to move to. Use the number pad to enter a number between 0 and 99 and then press the OK button to confirm the move. BookSense will jump to this playing position and will start playback automatically. When entering the percentage, if you make a mistake, use the Cancel button to delete the entries. When all entered data has been deleted, a musical tone will be heard. At this stage, if you press the Cancel button one more time, you will exit from the percentage navigation process. Note: If you enter a value that is greater than 99, an error message will be spoken and the edit box will be cleared ready for you to enter a value within the permissible range. 24 Repeating a section of a file. Within an individual file, BookSense enables you to select and repeat a section of the file until you stop playback or it reaches the number of repeats specified in the playback settings. This section only details how to select a section of a file to be repeated. The "Playback settings" section later in this chapter shows you how to set the number of repeats. To specify a section of a file to repeat, follow these steps: Whilst the file is playing, press the Record button at the start point of the section you wish to repeat. BookSense will announce that the start point has been set. Allow the file to continue to play until you reach the end point of the section you wish repeated and press the Record button again. BookSense will announce that the end point has been set and it will automatically commence playing back the specified section repeatedly. When the section has been repeated the specified number of times, normal playback will resume automatically from the end of the selected section. The selected section will be deselected at the same time. If you wish to stop the playback of the repeated section before it reaches the specified number of repetitions, press the Play button and normal playback will resume. You can now operate the playback of the file as normal. Note: Section repetition only works within a single file. Note: If you set a start point but not an end point, the section repetition feature will be cancelled. Using the equaliser. The BookSense enables you to select from 4 preset equaliser settings. These are "Normal", "Pop", "Classic" and "Rock". This section shows you the two methods of selecting your preferred option. To select an equaliser setting using the menu, follow these steps: Press the Menu button once to go into the menu system. BookSense allows you to insert up to 1000 marks in any file. This section details how to insert, move to and delete marks. Mark information will be stored even after you exit from that file. 27 Inserting a mark. To insert a mark in the currently playing file, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 1 button. BookSense will ask you to enter a mark number. Use the number pad to enter a number between 1 and 1000. If you make a mistake during this process, use the Cancel button to delete the last number. Once you have deleted all the numbers, BookSense will play a musical tone. When you have correctly entered the mark number, press the OK button to confirm your entry. BookSense will confirm that the mark has been inserted and it will return to play or pause mode. If you enter a number outside the range 1 to 1000, BookSense will speak a warning and will clear the edit box ready for you to try again. If you enter a number of a mark that already exists, BookSense will speak a warning and will ask if you wish to move the existing mark to the current location. Press the OK button or the Menu button if you wish to move it. If you wish the existing mark to remain in its current position, use the Left or Right buttons to go to the "No" option and press the OK button or the Menu button. Alternatively you can also press the Cancel button. If you wish to cancel the process at any time, use the Cancel button. You may require to press it one or more times depending on how many numbers you have entered in the edit box. Note: Up to 1000 marks can be inserted and these must be numbered in the range 1 to 1000. Moving to a mark. Once a mark or marks have been inserted in a file, you can move to them as follows: During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 2 button. BookSense will ask you to enter the number of the mark you wish to move to. Use the number pad to enter a mark number in the range 1 to 1000. When the correct mark number has been entered, press the OK button or the Menu button. The playback position will move to the mark and playing will start automatically. If no mark exists with the number you specified, an error message will be spoken and playing will start again automatically. If you specify a mark number outside the range 1 to 1000, an error message will be spoken and the edit box will be cleared ready for you to re-enter a valid mark number. If you wish to cancel the process entirely, press the Cancel button repeatedly until you return to playback or pause mode. 28 Deleting a mark. If any marks have been specified for the current file, you can delete them by following these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 3 button. BookSense will ask you to enter the number of the mark you wish to delete. Use the number pad to enter the number of the mark you wish to delete. If you make a mistake during this process, use the Cancel button to delete the last number. Once you have deleted all the numbers, BookSense will play a musical tone. When you have correctly entered the number of the mark you wish to delete, press the OK button or the Menu button. BookSense will confirm that the deletion has been successful. If you enter a number for which no mark exists, you will hear an error message and playing will commence automatically. If you enter a number outside the range 1 to 1000, BookSense will speak an error message and will then clear the edit box ready for you to try again. If you wish to cancel the process altogether, press the Cancel button once more after clearing the edit box as above. Note: If there are no marks in the current file, an error message will be spoken when you press the Number 3 button. This gives you an easy way to check if any marks remain in a file or not. Using playlists. In Media mode, BookSense provides a playlist feature to enable you to easily select the types of files or track that you wish to listen to. You can save your own playlists or use playlists which are automatically generated according to the artist, album or genre tag information. This section shows you how to save, play, rename and delete your own playlists and how to play the automatically created playlists. Saving a playlist. Reminder: When navigating in the audio lists, you can select or unselect individual files or folders by pressing the Number 9 button. You can select all items in the current list by pressing the Number 7 button and you can unselect all items by exiting a folder. To save a playlist using the menu, follow these steps: First select the files and/or folders that you wish to include in the playlist. Press the Play button or the OK button to start playback. During playback or in pause mode, press the Menu button to enter the menu system. Use the Up or Down buttons to go to the "Save playlist" item and select it. BookSense will announce that the playlist has been successfully saved and will then exit the menu system. 29 To save a playlist using the quick method, follow these steps: First select the files and/or folders that you wish to include in the playlist. Press the Play button or the OK button to start playback. During playback or in pause mode, press and hold down the Number 7 button for more than 2 seconds. BookSense will announce that the playlist has been successfully saved. Note: The playlist that you save will be automatically named in the format "Playlist-XXX.m3u", where "XXX" is a number from 001 to 999. It will be stored in a folder called 'PLAYLIST', in the parent folder called 'MUSIC'. For example, the first playlist you save will be called "Playlist-001.m3u", the second will be "Playlist002" and so on. Selecting a playlist. This section shows you how to locate and play your own playlists and the automatically generated ones. The method to do this is similar for all playlists. To select a playlist, follow these steps: At any time in Media mode, press the Menu button to enter the menu system. Use the Up or Down buttons to go to the "Select playlist" option and select it. This will open a sub menu containing 4 items. The 4 items will be "My playlists", "Artist", "Album" and "Genre". Inside each of these folders, there will be a list of playlists depending on the content that is stored in the 'MUSIC' folder on the current storage device. Use the Up or Down buttons to go to the type of playlist you want to use and select it to view the contents. If the playlist is empty, the message "No playlist" will be spoken and the menu will close. Use the Up or Down buttons to browse through the available playlists. The number of tracks in each playlist will be spoken as you navigate up and down. When you have decided which playlist you want to use, press the Play button, OK button or the Menu button to start playback. Note: For items to be listed in the automatic playlists, they must have the appropriate tag information stored in the files. The files must also be stored in the 'MUSIC' folder. Note: Files you add to your own playlists can be in any of the other Media mode folders but they will not appear on the automatic playlists. Note: If the tag information does not exist, items will be listed as "Unknown" in the automatic playlists. Note: If the stored tag information is missing or wrong, this can be edited using a PC. 30 Renaming or deleting a playlist. As mentioned previously, the playlists that you create will be named sequentially as "Playlist-001.m3u", "Playlist-002.m3u" and so on. You may, however, prefer to rename them to give a clearer idea of what type of content the access. This section shows you how to do this and also how to delete playlists you no longer want. To rename or delete a playlist, follow these steps: Connect BookSense to your PC as described earlier in this manual. Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, browse to the storage device that you have stored your playlists on. For the T50, this will either be on the SD card or on the USB stick. For the T50XT, you will have the additional flash disk option. Browse to the 'MUSIC' folder and open it. Browse to the 'PLAYLIST' folder and open it. You should now find a list of the saved playlists. Select the one you wish to rename or delete. If you wish to rename it, use the rename function on the File menu, make your changes and press ENTER. If you wish to delete the playlist, simply press the Delete key. Once you have made all the changes you want, close Windows Explorer or My Computer and disconnect the BookSense from the PC as detailed earlier. Note: If you now check the items listed in the "My playlists" menu item, it should reflect the changes you have just made. Note: When renaming a playlist, you must ensure that the extension of ".m3u" is not altered otherwise the playlist will not be recognised. DAISY mode. This chapter details features that are specific to using the BookSense in DAISY mode. Supported formats in DAISY mode. In DAISY mode, the following formats are supported: DAISY 2.0/2.02/3.0, DAISY XML/Digital Talking Book ANSI/NISO Z39.86 2002, 2005 NLS content (3gp, AMR-WB+) RFB&D content (AudioPlus, AudioAccess-Protected WMA) Bookshare.org DAISY content NIMAS 1.1 DRM: support 2006 PDTB2 authentication. Selecting and playing DAISY content. Reminder: As much of the navigation detail is not repeated here, you may wish to review the section "Navigating files and folders" before continuing. 31 To use DAISY content, you must first switch to the DAISY mode by pressing the Mode button repeatedly until "DAISY" is spoken. In DAISY mode, you can only select a complete DAISY title to be played. Individual audio tracks in the titles are not listed. However, they can be navigated once the DAISY title is playing. The main points about playing DAISY content are as follows: Once you have selected the DAISY title you wish to play, press the Play button or the OK button to load it and start playback. Press the Play button during playback to pause the audio and press the Play button again to restart playback. When you return to a DAISY title that you were playing previously, playback will commence from the place where it stopped the last time. If you wish to stop playback and return to the contents list, press the Cancel button to exit the current DAISY title. Getting information about the current title. It is often useful to be able to get information about the current DAISY title. This section shows you how to get both summary information and detailed information on the current DAISY title. Getting summary information. To get summary information on the current DAISY title, including the title, the current heading number and the elapsed time, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 0 button once. BookSense will speak the summary information and will then return to playback or pause mode. Note: You can stop the information being spoken by pressing the Cancel button at any time during the announcement. Getting detailed information. If you wish to get more detailed information about the current DAISY title, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press and hold down the Number 0 button for 2 seconds. BookSense will open the DAISY Info dialogue box which can be navigated one element at a time. The items listed are the number of marks in the title, the current and total number of headings, the total playing time, the elapsed playing time and the remaining playing time. Use the Up or Down buttons to review each item in turn. You can also check the detail more carefully by using the Left or Right buttons on each item. When you have finished with the dialogue box, press the Cancel button or the OK button to close it and return to playback or pause mode. 32 Navigating in DAISY mode. This section details how to use the navigation options which are available in DAISY mode. All of the methods of navigating are very similar in the way they are used. Available navigation options. In DAISY titles, the navigation options will vary depending on the structure of the title and whether or not items such as pages and marks have been inserted. However, the following options will always be available: Phrase Paragraph Heading Home or end Time Level 1 Note: "Phrase" is the default navigation option in DAISY mode. Individual titles may also include the following additional navigation options if they have been included by the creator of the title or have been entered by the end user: Level 2 to Level 6 headings Pages Marks Note: The only navigation item which the end user can add is "Mark". Moving to the beginning or end. To move quickly to the beginning or end of a DAISY title, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Up or Down buttons to move to the "Home or end" item. Use the Left button to go to the start of the title or use the Right button to go to the end of the title. In both these cases, playback will start automatically. Moving by level. To navigate by level, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Up or Down buttons to move to the desired level. This will be listed as "Level X" where "X" is a number between 1 and 6. Use the Left button to move to the previous heading at the selected level. Use the Right button to move to the next heading at the selected level. In both these cases, playback will start automatically. 33 Note: When you select a navigation level, you will move to any heading that is at the same or higher level to the level selected. For example, if you select Level 3 navigation, you will jump to all headings at Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. Headings at Levels 4, 5 and 6 will be ignored. Note: If no additional levels have been included in the DAISY title, only Level 1 navigation will be available. Moving by heading. Navigating by headings is very similar to level navigation. The only difference is that you will move to the previous or next heading regardless of its heading level. In other words, no headings will be missed out as you move back or forward in the DAISY title. To navigate by heading, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Up or Down buttons to move to the "Heading" item. Use the Left button to move to the previous heading. Use the Right button to move to the next heading. In both these cases, playback will start automatically. You can also navigate directly to a specified heading as follows: During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 8 button. BookSense will speak the current heading number, the total number of headings in the title and will then ask you to enter the number of the heading you wish to go to. Use the number pad to enter a value less than or equal to the total number of headings in the title and press the OK button or the Menu button to confirm your entry. Press the Cancel button repeatedly if you want to correct an entry. A musical tone will be heard when all numbers have been deleted. Pressing the Cancel button once more will cancel the process altogether. Moving by page. If pages have been included in the DAISY title by the creator of the title, the additional navigation option of "Page" will be added to those already available. Pages cannot be added by the end user. To navigate by pages, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Up or Down buttons to move to the "Page" item. Use the Left button to move to the previous page. Use the Right button to move to the next page. In both these cases, playback will start automatically. You can also navigate directly to a specified page as follows: 34 During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 7 button. BookSense will speak the current page number, the total number of pages in the title and will then ask you to enter the number of the page you wish to go to. Use the number pad to enter a value less than or equal to the total number of pages in the title and press the OK button or the Menu button to confirm your entry. Press the Cancel button repeatedly if you want to correct an entry. A musical tone will be heard when all numbers have been deleted. Pressing the Cancel button once more will cancel the process altogether. Moving by phrase. In a DAISY title, a phrase is the audio between one moment of silence and the next. This often correlates to the pauses between sentences but will largely depend on how the DAISY title was created. To move by phrases, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Up or Down buttons to move to the "Phrase" item. Use the Left button to move to the previous phrase. Use the Right button to move to the next phrase. In both these cases, playback will start automatically. Moving by paragraph. In the BookSense, in DAISY mode, a paragraph is considered to be 5 phrases. Therefore navigating by paragraph is a way of jumping backwards or forwards by 5 phrases at a time. To navigate by paragraph, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Up or Down buttons to move to the "paragraph" item. Use the Left button to move back 5 phrases. Use the Right button to move forwards 5 phrases. In both these cases, playback will start automatically. Moving by time jumps. In DAISY mode, The BookSense allows you to jump through titles in time jumps of 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes and 30 minutes. 35 To cycle through the available time increments, press the Number 9 button repeatedly until you hear the setting you require. Using the procedure above will now jump the playing position backwards or forwards by the newly selected time increment. Note: The default time increment setting is "1 minute". Using marks in DAISY mode. BookSense allows you to insert up to 1000 marks in any DAISY title). This section details how to insert, move to and delete marks. Mark information will be stored even after you stop playing that file. Inserting a mark. To insert a mark in the current title, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 1 button. BookSense will announce how many marks are already inserted and will then ask you to enter a mark number. Note: You can only insert one mark per phrase in the DAISY title. If you try to insert a mark on a phrase where a mark has already been inserted, BookSense will speak an error message. 36 Moving to a mark. Once a mark or marks have been inserted in a title, you can move to them in 2 ways. You can go directly to a numbered mark or you can jump sequentially through all the marks in the current title. To go directly to a numbered mark, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 2 button. BookSense will ask you to enter the number of the mark you wish to move to. Use the number pad to enter a mark number in the range 1 to 1000. If you make a mistake during this process, use the Cancel button to delete the last number. Once you have deleted all the numbers, BookSense will play a musical tone. To navigate to marks sequentially, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Up or Down buttons to move to the "Mark" item. Use the Left button to move to the previous mark. Use the Right button to move to the next mark. In both these cases, playback will start automatically. Note: The "Mark" option will not be available until at least one mark has been inserted in the current DAISY title. Deleting a mark. If any marks have been specified for the current DAISY title, you can delete them by following these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 3 button. 37 If you enter a number for which no mark exists, you will hear an error message and playing will commence automatically. If you enter a number outside the range 1 to 1000, BookSense will speak an error message and will then clear the edit box ready for you to try again. If you wish to cancel the process altogether, press the Cancel button once more after clearing the edit box as above. Note: If there are no marks in the current DAISY title , an error message will be spoken when you press the Number 3 button. This gives you an easy way to check if any marks remain in a title or not. Document Reader mode. This chapter details features that are specific to using the BookSense in Document Reader mode. This mode enables you to access a wide range of textual files using the built in speech system. Supported formats in Document Reader mode. The following document formats are supported in Document Reader mode: Plain text (.txt) Rich Text Format (.rtf) Microsoft Word (.doc and .docx) Hyper Text Mark-up Language (.htm and .html) Extensible Mark-up Language (.xml) Braille formats (.brl and .brf) Bookshare Braille files Selecting and playing documents. Use the Right button to move to the next word. In both these cases, BookSense will speak the word you have gone to and will then stop playback. Moving by character. To navigate by character, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Up or Down buttons to move to the "Character" item. Use the Left button to move to the previous character. Use the Right button to move to the next character. In both these cases, BookSense will speak the character you have gone to and will then stop playback. Moving by characters phonetically. To navigate by character phonetically, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Up or Down buttons to move to the "Phonetic" item. Use the Left button to move to the previous character. Use the Right button to move to the next character. In both these cases, BookSense will speak the character you have gone to followed by the phonetic spelling of that character. Playback will stop after the phonetic spelling is finished. Searching for words in the document. BookSense provides a simple word search feature for use in Document Reader mode. To search a document for a particular word, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Up or Down buttons to move to the "Word" item. Use the Left or Right button to move to the word that you want to search for in the rest of the document. Having found the search word, use the Up or Down buttons to move to the "Search word" item. If the word is found, BookSense will speak it and the rest of the sentence in which it occurs. If the word is not found, BookSense will speak an error message. 41 Moving by percentage. In addition to the above methods of navigating your files, in Document Reader mode, you can also opt to navigate by percentage. Use the number pad to enter a number from 0 to 99 and then press the OK button to confirm the move. Marks and voice memos in Document Reader mode. In Document Reader mode, BookSense allows you to add marks and voice memos into the current document. Voice memos in this context are like marks with associated speech. When you navigate to a voice memo in a document, you will not hear the memo spoken at this time, however, you can review the recorded notes as a separate process. You can insert up to 1000 marks in any document. This section details how to insert, move to and delete marks and voice memos. It also shows you how to review the marks and voice memos in a document. Switching between mark and voice memo features. As the procedure for inserting marks uses the same buttons that are used in inserting voice memos, you need a way to tell BookSense that you wish to switch from one mode to the other or vice versa. To toggle between mark insertion and voice memo insertion, press the Number 9 button. Each time you press this button BookSense will switch modes. Note: The default setting is for marks to be inserted. 42 Inserting a mark. To insert a mark in the current title, follow these steps: Press the Number 9 button until you hear "Switch to mark setting" announced. This will confirm that you are about to enter a mark and not a voice memo. During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 1 button. Note: Mark information will be stored even after you exit the document. Inserting voice memos. The procedure for inserting a voice memo is very similar to that for inserting marks, with the additional requirement to record the audio element. This section shows you how this is achieved. To insert a voice memo in the current title, follow these steps: Press the Number 9 button until you hear "Switch to voice memo setting" announced. This will confirm that you are about to enter a voice memo and not a mark. During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 1 button. BookSense will say "Start recording voice memo" and recording will start. Speak the message you wish to record and press the OK button when you are finished. BookSense will confirm that recording has finished by saying "Stop recording". You will then be asked to enter a voice memo number. 43 Use the number pad to enter a number between 1 and 1000. If you make a mistake during this process, use the Cancel button to delete the last number. Once you have deleted all the numbers, BookSense will play a musical tone. When you have correctly entered the voice memo number, press the OK button to confirm your entry. BookSense will confirm that the voice memo has been inserted and it will return to play or pause mode. If you enter a number of a voice memo that already exists or a number outside the range 1 to 1000, BookSense will speak a warning and will clear the edit box ready for you to try again. If you wish to cancel the process at any time, use the Cancel button. You may require to press it one or more times depending on how many numbers you have entered in the edit box. Note: Each voice memo has a maximum length of 40 seconds. If you try to record for longer than 40 seconds, recording will stop automatically and BookSense will ask you to enter the voice memo number at this stage. Note: Up to 1000 voice memos can be inserted and these must be numbered in the range 1 to 1000. The numbers used for marks and voice memos must be unique within each document. Note: Voice memo information will be stored even after you exit the document. Moving to a mark or voice memo. Once one or more marks or voice memos have been inserted in a document, you can move to them in 2 ways. You can go directly to them using their allocated number or you can jump sequentially through all the marks and voice memos in the current title. To go directly to a numbered mark or voice memo, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 2 button. BookSense will ask you to enter the number of the mark or voice memo you wish to move to. Use the number pad to enter a number in the range 1 to 1000. If you make a mistake during this process, use the Cancel button to delete the last number. Once you have deleted all the numbers, BookSense will play a musical tone. When the correct number has been entered, press the OK button or the Menu button. The playback position will move to the mark or voice memo position and playing will start automatically. If no mark or voice memo exists with the number you specified, an error message will be spoken and playing will start again automatically. If you specify a mark number outside the range 1 to 1000, an error message will be spoken and the edit box will be cleared ready for you to re-enter a valid mark number. If you wish to cancel the process entirely, press the Cancel button repeatedly until you return to playback or pause mode. 44 Note: As the mark and voice memo numbers are unique, this procedure will work regardless of whether you are in the mark mode or the voice memo mode. The spoken prompts, however, will differ slightly. To navigate to marks and voice memos sequentially, follow these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Up or Down buttons to move to the "Mark" item. Use the Left button to move to the previous mark or voice memo. Use the Right button to move to the next mark or voice memo. In both these cases, playback will start automatically. Note: The "Mark" option will not be available until at least one mark or voice memo has been inserted in the current document. Deleting marks and voice memos. If any marks or voice memos have been specified for the current document, you can delete them by following these steps: During playback or in pause mode, press the Number 3 button. BookSense will ask you to enter the number of the mark or voice memo you wish to delete. Use the number pad to enter the number of the mark or voice memo you wish to delete. If you make a mistake during this process, use the Cancel button to delete the last number. Once you have deleted all the numbers, BookSense will play a musical tone. When you have correctly entered the number, press the OK button or the Menu button. BookSense will confirm that the deletion has been successful. If you enter a number for which no mark exists, you will hear an error message and BookSense will return to playing or pause mode. If you enter a number outside the range 1 to 1000, BookSense will speak an error message and will then clear the edit box ready for you to try again. If you wish to cancel the process altogether, press the Cancel button once more after clearing the edit box as above. Note: As the mark and voice memo numbers are unique, this procedure will work regardless of whether you are in the mark mode or the voice memo mode. The spoken prompts, however, will differ slightly. Note: If there are no marks or voice memos in the current document, an error message will be spoken when you press the Number 3 button. This gives you an easy way to check if any marks remain in a document or not. Reviewing mark information. This feature will only be available in a document which contains one or more marks or voice memos. The menu will remain hidden if no marks or voice memos exist. To review information about the marks and voice memos in the current document, follow these steps: 45 During playback or in pause mode, press the Menu button to open the menu. Use the Up or Down buttons to move to the "Mark info" item and select it. This will open a dialogue box. The dialogue box will contain a list of the marks and voice memos that exist in the current document. The list will be ordered by the physical location of the mark or voice memo in the document, with the ones nearest the start of the document at the top of the list. For marks, you will hear "Mark XXXX, Position YYYYY bytes" where "XXXX" is the mark number and "YYYYY" is the position of the mark in the document expressed in bytes. For voice memos, you will hear "Memo XXXX, Position YYYYY bytes" where "XXXX" is the mark number and "YYYYY" is the position of the mark in the document expressed in bytes. You will also hear the recorded audio that relates to that voice memo. When you have finished reviewing the information, press the Cancel button to return to the document. Recent documents option. BookSense provides you with a way to quickly access documents that you have read recently. This appears within the menu in an item called "Recent documents" and this lists the last 20 most recently used documents. This section shows you how to access the list and to review the entries. To access the recent documents list, follow these steps: Either from the document list or during playback or pause, press the Menu button to enter the menu system. Use the Up or Down buttons to go to the "Recent documents" item and select it. This will open a list of the 20 most recently used documents from the currently selected storage device, if they are still available. When the list reaches 20 entries, the oldest ones will drop off the listing as the newest ones are added. If you were in playback or pause mode when you activated this list, the document that you were reading will be closed before the recent documents list is displayed. This is because BookSense can only have one document open in each mode at the same time. Use the Up or Down buttons to review the list of documents. The most recently read item will be at the top of the list. If you wish to read a document again, press the OK button or the Play button. Whilst reading a document that you selected from the recent documents list, if you press the Cancel button to exit the document, you will be returned to the recent documents list. If, at this point, you wish to go back to the main documents list, either press the Cancel button once more or go into the menu and select the "Document list" item from there. 46 Note: For this feature to work, the documents must still be stored in their original location and must not have been deleted or moved. Note: If a document was originally read from a removable device, and this device has been removed, the document will not appear on the recent documents list as the list that is displayed only relates to the storage device that is currently being used. Page settings option. Within Document Reader mode, there needs to be a way to specify settings that will help BookSense identify what should be considered as a page, in particular for documents where no page identifiers are present. This section shows you how to set the parameters for page identification in Document Reader mode. To adjust the page settings, follow these steps: Press the Menu button to access the menu system. Use the Up or Down buttons to go to the "Page settings" item and select it. This will open the "Page settings" dialogue box. Use the Up or Down buttons to go to the "Characters per line" item. This is an edit box. BookSense will ask you to enter a value for the number of characters per line. Use the number pad to enter a value from 60 to 100. The default value is 80. Use the Up or Down buttons to go to the "Lines per page" item. This is an edit box. BookSense will ask you to enter a value for the number of lines per page. Use the number pad to enter a value from 18 to 40. The default value is 25. Use the Up or Down buttons to go to the "Allow to separate page by form feed character" item. This is a combo box. Use the Left or Right buttons to select between "Allow" and "Ignore". The default setting is "Allow". If you select "Ignore" all form feed characters in the document will be ignored. Once you have made your selection, press the OK button or the Menu button to save your selection and exit the menu system. Alternatively, you can press the Cancel button if you do not wish to save the settings. Note: You can only access the page settings item from either the documents list or from the recent documents list. It is not available whilst you are playing a document or in pause mode. Radio mode (T50XT only). The T50XT is supplied with an FM radio facility. The radio feature is not available in the T50 model of the BookSense. This chapter describes how to tune the radio manually, using the channel scanning feature and using the presets option. It also describes how to record live radio broadcasts. 47 Note: The radio uses headphones to act as its antenna and will not function properly if headphones are not connected. If you wish to try out the radio feature, connect headphones before starting. Manual tuning. The radio can be tuned in increments of 0.1MHz to any frequency in the range 87.5MHz to 108.0MHz. To tune the radio manually to a specific frequency, follow these steps: Press either the Left or Right button repeatedly until you reach the desired frequency. If you reach 87.5MHz and press the Left button once more, the frequency will jump to the highest frequency of 108.0MHz. If you press the Right button when you are on 108.0MHz, the frequency will jump to the lowest frequency of 87.5MHz. Each time you press the Left or Right buttons, the frequency will change by 0.1MHz and BookSense will announce the frequency that you have move to. When you reach the frequency you want, simply start listening. Tuning using the scanning facility. As with many radios, BookSense provides an automatic channel scanning facility. This section shows you how to use the channel scanning feature, including how to adjust the sensitivity of the scan. To automatically scan for the next available radio station with a sufficiently strong reception, follow these steps: If you wish to scan downwards in the frequency range, press and hold down the Left button for more than 2 seconds. If you wish to scan upwards in the frequency range, press and hold down the Right button for more than 2 seconds. In both cases, BookSense will automatically search for a broadcast with a strong enough signal strength. When it finds one, it will stop scanning, announce the frequency that it has gone to and start playing that channel. If you wish to search for a different channel, simply repeat the above process. Note: At any time when the radio is playing, you can quickly check the current frequency and whether you are receiving a mono or stereo broadcast by pressing the Number 0 button once. Note: The Channel scanning facility will automatically loop round when it reaches the lowest or highest frequency. In order that you can filter out channels with poor reception, BookSense offers 2 ways for you to alter the scanning sensitivity. One method uses the menu system and the other uses a short cut button. The higher the sensitivity, the more channels that BookSense will detect when scanning. To change the scanning sensitivity using the menu, follow these steps: 48 Press the Menu button to access the menu system. Use the Up or Down buttons to go to the "Channel scanning sensitivity setting" item and select it. This is a dialogue box containing a single combo box. Use the Left or Right buttons to select your preferred sensitivity setting in the range 1 to 10. The default setting is 4. BookSense will confirm that the preset has been successfully registered and will exit from the menu system. If you wish to exit from the menu without saving a preset, press the Cancel button. To register a preset using the short cut method, follow these steps: First tune the radio to the frequency that you wish to use as a preset. The Number 1, Number 2, Number 3, Number 4, Number 5 and Number 6 buttons act as the preset buttons. 49 Press and hold down one of these buttons and BookSense will register that button with its corresponding preset. For example, if you hold down Number 4, Preset 4 will be tuned to the currently active frequency. If the selected button has already been allocated to a preset, BookSense will tell you. The new preset will not be registered. Note: You cannot overwrite an existing preset. You must first delete the existing preset and then register the new one. Deleting presets is detailed later in this chapter. Selecting a preset channel. Once you have registered one or more presets, you can select them quickly in 2 ways. To select a preset using the number pad, follow these steps: Press the Number 1, Number 2, Number 3, Number 4, Number 5 or Number 6 button once to switch quickly to the corresponding preset. For example, if you wish to switch to preset 2, press the Number 2 button once. If a channel has been set for this preset, BookSense will switch to that frequency and start playing. If no preset has been registered, BookSense will tell you that the preset is empty and will remain on the currently selected frequency. To select a preset using the Up or Down buttons, follow these steps: Use the Up or Down buttons to move through a list of all the registered presets. BookSense will speak the preset number and the registered frequency. It will then start playing the channel. Note: The presets in this list will appear in numerical order and the list will loop round at the top and bottom. Note: Only the presets which have been registered will appear on this listing. Unregistered presets will be ignored completely. Deleting a preset channel. You can delete a preset either via the menu system or by using the short cut method. To delete a preset using the menu, follow these steps: Press the menu button to open the menu system. Use the Up or Down button to go to the "Presets" item and select it. Note: When you listen to your recording, if it is too quiet, you may wish to increase the microphone sensitivity and repeat the recording. If the recording is too loud or distorted, reducing the sensitivity may help. 54 Note: For all recording methods, the recording time is limited only by the available storage space on the media being used. Recording via an external microphone. Recording via an external microphone is identical to recording via the internal microphone, except that you require to plug in the external microphone, and ensure that it is turned on, before starting to record. Note: If you have previously been recording using the line in option, you will also need to reset the "Recording source" to "Microphone" in the recording settings dialogue box. Refer to the first section in this chapter if you are not sure how to do this. Recording via the line in. Recording via the line in option is identical to recording with the internal or external microphone except that you first need to ensure that the "Recording source" option in the recording settings is set to "Line in". Refer to the first section in this chapter if you need to check how this is done. Adding marks during recording. When you are making a recording, you may wish to add marks at places that are important to be able to get back to quickly. This might be the start of a particular element of the recording or a time when a teacher or lecturer has mentioned something worth noting. Whatever the reason, BookSense allows you to add up to 20 marks during the recording. To add a mark during recording, follow these steps: Press the Number 1 button whenever you want to insert a mark. Marks will be numbered automatically from 1 to 20. No prompts or messages will be spoken by BookSense when marks are being inserted. Once inserted in this way, marks can be navigated and deleted in the same way as marks that have been added in the standard way in Media mode. Additional features. You have now covered all of the main features that relate to accessing files or documents in Media mode, DAISY mode, Document Reader mode and Radio mode (T50XT only). There are, however, some additional features that are extremely useful. These include an alarm, a sleep timer, a power saving option, a media formatting option and a Bluetooth facility. On occasions where the unit has stopped functioning for no obvious reason, and where you are sure that the battery still has sufficient power, there are 3 ways to force the system to reset. These are described here. Before performing any of the following, ensure that the Hold switch is not in the "Locked" position as this might cause confusion. To reset the unit normally, use a tool with a narrow point, such as a paper clip, to press the Reset button once, releasing it after you have done so. After about 20 seconds, the rebooting sound should be heard followed by the system speech. To perform a hard reset, press and hold down the Number 4 button and, whilst still holding the Number 4 button, press the Reset button as above. Keep your finger on the Number 4 button until you hear the booting sound which will be after about 20 seconds. You can then release the button. Lastly, if the above 2 methods have failed, you can try removing the battery. Do this as detailed earlier in the manual and wait for around 10 seconds before replacing it again. The system should reboot as before. Upgrading the firmware. Periodically HIMS may release a firmware upgrade to enhance the features in the BookSense. This chapter describes how this should be done. 61 To upgrade your BookSense, follow these steps: First download the compressed (.zip) file from the internet. Using your computer, unzip the file using a suitable compression software. Ensure that you note the location of the unzipped files. Connect the BookSense to mains power using the AC adaptor. BookSense must be connected to mains power otherwise the upgrade will not be possible. Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, locate the unzipped upgrade file and copy it to the root folder on the SD card. This can either be done using a card reader or by connecting the BookSense directly to the PC as described earlier in the manual. If using a card reader, transfer the card to the BookSense and turn it on. If transferring directly to the BookSense from the PC, disconnect the BookSense from the PC as described earlier. BookSense should return to normal operation. With the SD card inserted, press the Menu button to enter the menu system. Use the Up or Down buttons to go to the "Advanced" menu and select it. You should end up on an item named "Upgrade". Press the OK button or the Menu button to start the upgrade process. BookSense will ask you to confirm that you wish to proceed with the upgrade. Press the OK button or the Menu button if you wish to proceed. The upgrade will start and will take around 1.5 minutes. When it is complete, BookSense should restart automatically and announce that the upgrade has been successful. Note: If you accidentally copy the upgrade file to the wrong location or you have not downloaded the correct upgrade file from the internet, BookSense will be unable to perform the upgrade and an error message will be spoken. No harm will be done to the unit Technical specification. This chapter summarises the technical data for the BookSense. If you have read this information thoroughly and you still cannot fix the problem, you should contact RNIB Technology Information and Support team on 0845 900 0015. Symptom: The BookSense will not turn on. Possible solution 1: The Hold switch is on, preventing any of the buttons working. Unlock the Hold switch and try again. Possible solution 2: The battery is uncharged. Connect the AC adaptor and try again. Possible solution 3: The battery may not be inserted correctly. Reinsert the battery ensuring that the locking clip is in place. Remember to wait for about 20 seconds for the unit to boot. Symptom: No sound from internal speaker or the headphones. Possible solution: The volume setting is too low. Disconnect the headphones and check that the internal speaker volume setting is not at the minimum setting. Reconnect the headphones and check the volume setting for headphones. Remember the 2 volume settings are different. Symptom: The BookSense stops functioning. 63 Possible solution 1: BookSense may have shut down as a result of the sleep timer or power saving feature. Try pressing the Play button to turn the unit back on again. Possible solution 2: The battery is flat. Connect the AC adaptor and try to switch on the unit. Possible solution 3: If nothing appears to be working, try pressing the Reset button. Wait for around 20 seconds and the unit should reboot. Possible solution 4: Perform a hard reset by holding down the Number 4 button and, at the same time, press the Reset button. You must continue to hold down the Number 4 button until the system has rebooted about 20 seconds later. Possible solution 5: Try removing the battery and replacing it after a wait of around 10 seconds. The system should reboot automatically after about 20 seconds. Symptom: You are unable to find content that you have saved on a storage device. Possible solution 1: The BookSense is not focussed on the correct storage device. In the folder view, press and hold down the Number 0 button to switch to the other available storage devices and check the contents. Possible solution 2: You may have saved the items in the wrong folder. For example, the DAISY mode will only look for DAISY titles in the "DAISY" folder. Connect the BookSense to a PC and double check that the files are saved in the correct location. Symptom: No audio output or BookSense appears to not be working after switching modes. Possible solution 1: If you have been listening to the radio and were using the internal speaker, and then switched to one of the other playback modes, the audio will only be working through the headphones. Check if there is audio in the headset or disconnect the headset and try again. Symptom: Difficulty in detecting radio channels when using the channel scanner. Possible solution 1: The scanning sensitivity might be too low. Press the Number 7 button repeatedly to increase the value up to the maximum of 10. Possible solution 2: Your headphones are not connected or are not fitted properly. Check that you do have a set of headphones connected as they act as the antenna for the radio. Symptom: Registered radio preset channels are no longer available. Possible solution: If you have performed a hard reset, all presets will have been erased. You will need to re-register all the presets. Symptom: No pairing when trying to connect a Bluetooth headset. Possible solution: Check that the headset supports "A2DP". BookSense only supports the A2DP standard. 64 Terms and Conditions of Sale All goods are guaranteed against faults for 12 months from date of invoice.
