County of Alameda 9410 YARDWORKER DEFINITION Under general supervision, to act as a utility worker in the performance of a variety of duties and responsibilities in the Public Works Agency Corporation Yard; and to perform related work as required. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES The Yardworker classification is used only in the Public Works Agency. Incumbents of positions in this classification are assigned the responsibility of performing a variety of skilled functions requiring the ability to operate a wide variety of tools and equipment in the performance of day-to-day activities. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed. 1. Performs a wide variety of skilled tasks using tools that include arc welder, body grinder, stand grinder, drill press, hand drills, table saw, cut-off saw, saber saw, saw-all, chain saw, dial caliper-inch and metric, dial indicators with magnetic base and other miscellaneous hand or power tools. 2. Issues power tools and equipment and other miscellaneous supplies to Public Works Agency work crews and maintains the inventory and records of these tools and supplies in a computerized maintenance management and inventory system. 3. Fabricates and repairs flashers, A-frames, barricades and portable road signs. 4. Uses and trains other Agency personnel in the use of various types of equipment, such as portable pumps, generators, chain saws, pole hedgers, pole saws and weedeaters. 5. Maintains landscaping, including the sprinkler system. 6. Orders and receives all supplies for the Public Works Agency field operations, including pipe, lumber, solvents, traffic paint, personal protective equipment, hand tools, road materials, hazmat cleanup materials, etc. 7. Operates forklift to unload newly-received stock. 8. Maintains and repairs all pneumatic and hydraulic tools which include jackhammers, gasoline powered portable water pumps, chippers, generators, hedgers, chainsaws and other hand equipment used by Agency personnel. Yardworker – 9410 – Page 2 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Either I The equivalent of one year of full-time experience as a Laborer in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.) Or II The equivalent of two years of full-time experience performing a variety of skilled tasks as described in the Examples of Duties listed above. License: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license. Certificate: Acquisition of forklift operator’s certificate within 30 days of employment. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.
