OEDIPUS REX – Note Taking
Using the five “rules of tragedy” and Aristotle’s definition, compile a detailed note
on Oedipus Rex as a formal tragedy. Use a categorical format to organize your
information.
Your six headings/categories will be:
1. Unity of action, place, time
2. Hamartia/Hubris – the idea of the “tragic flaw”
3. Discovery and Reversal
4. Catharsis
5. Dramatic Irony
6. Irony of Fate
Point form is acceptable. Key lines as proof should be copied and cited by you
under each heading, with the exception of “Unity.” A clear explanation of how the
play adheres to this concept will suffice. Half a page to one page for each
category is the appropriate depth/length of coverage.
