Evanston church co-hosts six-week study of the Bible, Qur’ran and Islam
Beginning September 27, Dr. Carol Schersten LaHurd, interfaith lecturer and adjunct professor
at LSTC, will facilitate the six-week study, “Children of Abraham: Christians Study Islam and
the Qur’an,” at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1004 Greenwood, Evanston. The sessions are jointly
sponsored by the host congregation, Interfaith Action of Evanston, A Center of Christian-Muslim
Engagement for Peace and Justice and LSTC. Cost for the study is $20 (includes Islam: What

Multicultural Center plans Hispanic Heritage Celebration
A month-long collaborative celebration with DePaul University and McCormick Seminary
starting in mid-September will mark the 40th anniversary of the creation of LSTC’s Hispanic
Ministry Program. Lectures will be held at each of the schools. Mark your calendar for the
September 28 Hispanic Dinner and October 1 program at LSTC, 1100 East 55th Street, Chicago.

Interfaith Youth Core offers training sessions at LSTC
The nationally renowned leadership training group, Interfaith Youth Core, returns to LSTC for
an Interfaith Skill-Building Training Sessions at LSTC. On Friday, October 7, 9:00 a.m. -1:00
p.m., an Interfaith Youth Core representative will guide students and guests in practical ways to
organize and facilitate interfaith activities. No fee, but registration is required and spaces are

CCME presents lecture on Shariah in America
On October 9, A Center of Christian-Muslim Engagement for Peace and Justice hosts tthe
lecture, “Everyday Shariah: Islamic Law and American Life,” by American Muslim attorney
Janaan Hashim. Learn about the background of traditional Islamic code of conduct known as
Shariah and current legislation in the U.S. about it. The free lecture begins at 3:00 p.m. For more

“Sacred Soil, Living Water, Holy Air” theme of October Student Symposium
The Zygon Center for Religion and Science and its Religion and Science Student Society will
present the fourth annual Student Symposium on Science and Spirituality on Friday, October 21,
2011 at LSTC. This one-day conference attracts graduate students from across the U.S. in many
academic disciplines for rigorous and collaborative conversations in religion and science.
“Sacred Soil, Living Water, Holy Air: Science, Spirituality and the Elements of Earthly Life” is

Hymn Festival kicks off LSTC Chapel Music Series
Cantor to the Seminary Daniel Schwandt will lead a Hymn Festival in the Augustana Chapel at
LSTC, 1100 East 55th Street, Chicago, at 4 p.m. on October 16 in the first free concert of the

Biblical storyteller to perform Mark 1 – 7 on October 23
Dr. Philip Ruge-Jones, associate professor of theology, Texas Lutheran University, Seguin, and
convener of the Network of Biblical Storytellers, will perform Mark 1-7 at 7 p.m. on October 23.
Ruge-Jones’ performance is in honor of Dr. David Rhoads, LSTC professor emeritus of New
Testament. The free performance is LSTC, 1100 East 55th Street, Chicago.

November is Native American Heritage Month at LSTC
With the theme, “Waters, Rituals, and Rights,” the Multicultural Center at LSTC offers several
opportunities to explore Native American Heritage. November 11, come to LSTC for a screening
of the film, Native Nations. On November 19 -20, join members of the LSTC community for a
trip to the 59th Annual Powwow and the American Indian Center of Chicago. For details about

Solemn service of remembrance and repentance
Each year, the LSTC community holds a service of remembrance and repentance in observance
of the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the pogrom carried out in Nazi Germany November 9 – 10,
1938. Join the LSTC community and special guest from the Hyde Park neighborhood on
November 8 at 11 a.m. for a moving service of remembrance and repentance of religious
