Test Preparation
This workshop helps students to understand how memory functions by exploring an
information processing model. Two study techniques for easing the review process are
discussed: SQ3R (survey, question, read, recite, review) and PQRST (preview, question,
read, summarize, test). The workshop offers test taking strategies for recognition, recall,
and essay questions as well as tips for before, during, and after the test.
Test Anxiety and Relaxation
Presenters explain test anxiety and offer possible causes. Students are given tips for
emotional, physical, and mental test preparation, including relaxation techniques and
positive test-taking affirmations. Tips to control anxiety before, during, and after a test
are discussed.
Memory Techniques
This workshop focuses on improving memory for academic study by explaining a sixpart information processing model. Students are introduced to various memory
techniques and devices.
Time Management and Procrastination
In this workshop students will assess their current levels of procrastination and their
motivation for procrastination. It explores potential consequences of procrastination.
Six rules for time management are given, as well as tips for planning a better time
schedule.
APA, Chicago & MLA Citation Systems
This workshop is provided by The Writing Center. Please contact The Writing Center at
330-941-3055 with any questions.
Learning Styles
This workshop includes activities to determine the student’s learning preferences and
explains study strategies suited to their dominance. Students explore their auditory,
kinesthetic, and visual learning styles and right-brain/left-brain modalities. Tips are
given for whole brain thinking.
Goal Setting and Time Management
This workshop discusses the six components of Glasser’s Wise Choice Process. The
importance of the DAPPS Rule for setting goals (dated, achievable, personal, positive,
specific) is explained. Students perform a goal-setting worksheet activity.
Proofreading, Revising, and Editing
The aim of the Revising, Editing, and Proofreading workshop is to provide students with
everything they need to make their drafts better. Included in this presentation is a
listing of concerns that students should address when revising a paper along with a
detailed discussion of the order in which these concerns should be addressed. Some
areas presented for the students to focus on are thesis, organization, audience, and
development. Additionally, revision strategies, such as reading aloud and reading very
slowly, are also covered. We recommend scheduling this workshop either before
students are given back drafts to revise or before their initial drafts are due. Another
recommended time is before peer workshops as it gives the students some ideas of what
to look for in their classmates’ papers. While we do feel that the content of this
presentation is applicable for any subject area, we are willing to work with instructors to
add any specific additional information that might be subject or classroom specific. We
can also oversee workshopping with your students after they have completed drafts.
Introduction to Academic Research on the Internet
This workshop introduces students to Internet researching, including directories, search
engines, metasearch tools, and virtual libraries. It discusses the issues of validity,
accuracy, recency, objectivity, and intended audience of posted information.
Money Management
This workshop explains five steps for developing a spending plan while in college.
Common student money management mistakes are discussed and credit card tips are
given.
