Job Description – Design & Technology Teacher (Full Time)

Taunton School was founded in 1847 and is a fully co-educational boarding and day independent school, whose Headmaster is a member of HMC. The School offers a largely academic curriculum aimed at G.C.S.E, Advanced Level and the International Baccalaureate and the overwhelming majority of pupils go on to Higher Education. There is a wide range of choice in the Sixth Form. The School is situated on an attractive campus on the edge of Taunton, which it shares with the co-educational

Preparatory School, Pre-Prep and Nursery, providing continuity of education for all ages.

There are currently three full-time members of staff and a full-time technician in the Design &

Technology Department. The Department is very well-equipped including: three design studios, two workshops, a CAD CAM suite, an exhibition space, store, and a staff office.

Workshop One

This workshop is divided into five rooms: staff preparation area, metal fabrication and heat treatment area, spray booth, pupil’s store and a multimedia manufacturing space. Equipment includes: 8 x woodworking benches, 2 x metal work benches, circular saw, radial arm saw, planer-thicknesser, 2 x

Startrite bandsaws, 2.3m industrial spray booth with drying facility, vacuum forming machine, plastic dip coating machine, strip heater, convection oven, shot blasting unit, 2 x union graduate wood lathes, 3 x metal centre lathes, milling machine, 3 x Boxford pillar drills, 1 x Harrison / Colchester metal centre lathe, sheet metal fabrication equipment, 1.6m metal guillotine, mortising machine, abrasive disc sander, abrasive belt sander, 1 x scroll saw, polishing wheels, CNC plasma cutter, double brazing heath with forge, MIG Welder, TIG welder,, resistance welder (Spot), oxy-acetylene brazing, electronics / soldering equipment and numerous hand / fabrication tools. Donaldson Torit high capacity externally located extraction unit (wood dust) and a separate Donaldson fume extractor with spark arrestors and carbon filter.

Workshop Two

Equipment includes: 5 x large woodworking benches, 2 x large metalwork benches, 2 x Startrite 351SB

Bandsaws, MACC TE250 Metal Chopsaw with coolant, Baileigh Metal Section Roller, 915mm Slip rolls,

JET oscillating spindle sander, JET 300mm Abrasive Disc Sander, Oscillating vertical or horizontal abrasive belt sander, table mounted inverted trend router, numerous hand / fabrication tools. ESTA high capacity externally located extraction unit fitted with 120mm multi-position extraction hood and workshop cleaning kit.

CAD / CAM Facilities

Dimension 1200es 3D Printer, Boxford 250PCi CNC lathe, Boxford 300VMCi CNC Milling Machine, 1 x

A0 size CO² 100W laser cutter and 1 x A2+ size CO² 40W Laser Cutting Machine, Wizard CNC

PLASMAWIZ 44 CNC Plasma Cutter, XJ1224 8’ x 4’ CNC Router, CAMM-1 GX24 vinyl cutting machine plus full AVA facilities

Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat Professional. Techsoft 2D Design v2.09, MS Office, and

Design Studio Two (L3)

Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat Professional. Techsoft 2D Design v2.09, MS Office, and

Netsupport v9.0), SMARTboard and Data projector, Samsung visualiser, A3 colour flatbed USB

Scanner, DVD player and ceiling mounted speaker system, 2.2m Octagonal graphics and discussion table.

Design Studio Three (L13)

13 x Dual Core Dell Optiplex 755 PC’s with 17” LCD Displays (Software includes: Solidworks 2013,

Adobe CS5 Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat Professional. Techsoft 2D Design v2.09, MS

Office, and Netsupport v9.0) SMARTboard and Data projector Samsung visualiser, A3 colour flatbed

USB Scanner, DVD player and ceiling mounted speaker system, 3m Octagonal graphics and discussion table.

Other:

Colour printing up to A3 in size and a Sony SLR digital camera are available along with full audio visual facilities. A staff wood preparation area contains a circular saw, bandsaw, radial arm saw, and planer thicknesser. An appropriate range of hand and power tools are available.

Year 9 Design & Technology is one of the strongest optional subject in the School and the curriculum has a strong foundation of design for manufacture; projects stem across Resistant Materials, Graphic

Products and Electronics. The Department follows the GCSE AQA Product Design (4557) course where pupil numbers are high, the faculty offers AQA Product Design (5551/6551) at A Level. The

Department also offers Design & Technology as part of the International Baccalaureate diploma course.

The Department is particularly proud of its collaboration with the Arkwright Trust, Greenpower and links with local schools and industry. The Department also has increasing numbers of students continuing to study design / engineering courses at university.

The Design & Technology Department is vibrant and progressive. It has a high profile in the school community and has always attracted high quality staff who have enjoyed the harmonious and openminded atmosphere.

Applicants should be able to offer the following qualities and experience:

Be an enthusiastic and dynamic teacher of Product Design / Resistant Materials plus either

Graphic Products and /or Electronics.

Being professional and presentable at all times

Innovative and committed in the planning of lessons and the ongoing development of schemes of work

Able to embrace new technologies and integrate ICT in their teaching.

 Good classroom management and organisational skills

 Excellent record keeping

 Willingness to contribute to pupils development outside of lesson time

Involvement with the depts. ‘Greenpower’ Electric racing car initiative

Taking part in / organising local and international trips with the depts. pupils.

CAD CAM experience (Solidworks / 2D Design Essential, Adobe Photoshop / Illustrator would be an advantage)

 Competent in the use of Resistant Materials (wood, metal, plastics and composites)

 Competent use of a range of woodworking. metalworking and plastic forming processes

Competent in the use of graphical techniques both traditional and contemporary.

The post is more suited for an experienced teacher, however, an NQT with exceptional talent could be successful.

Taunton School offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities, athletic and cultural, to complement its academic programme. All members of staff are expected to make a significant contribution outside the classroom in some way, preferably in major sports, and, in recognition of this commitment, the

School pays a Taunton School Allowance. The post will be pensionable under the DfES Scheme. The salary will be comparable to the national pay spine for qualified teachers. The School offers a generous fee rebate scheme for the children of members of staff in proportion to salary.
