NO. R-459. HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION HONORING THE
PARTICIPATION OF UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT AND MIDDLEBURY
COLLEGE GRADUATES IN THE PEACE CORPS.
(H.C.R.331)
Offered by: Representatives Orr of Charlotte, Howrigan of Fairfield and
Scheuermann of Stowe
Whereas, the Peace Corps was established in 1961 after President John F.
Kennedy urged Americans to serve the cause of peace by working in
developing countries, and
Whereas, since its establishment, more than 190,000 Americans age 18 and
over have made the 27-month Peace Corps commitment and served in 137
countries, and currently over 8,000 individuals, a 37-year high, are offering
supportive assistance around the world, and
Whereas, the primary goals of the Peace Corps are to help the people of
interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women, promote
a better understanding of Americans in the host country, and promote a better
understanding of other people and countries on the part of Americans, and
Whereas, in recent years, Peace Corps volunteers have assisted schools in
developing computer skills and have educated communities on the threat of
HIV-AIDS, and
Whereas, the UVM Peace Corps Recruiting Office provides information to
interested individuals and organizations, both on and off campus, and works in
cooperation with the Boston regional Peace Corps office and the Green
Mountain Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Association, and

Whereas, in 2007, the UVM Peace Corps office reported that 25 of the
school’s alumni were serving in the Peace Corps, and
Whereas, this number placed the university in the 15th position among the
nation’s medium-sized colleges (defined as 5,001 to 15,000 students) in the
number of alumni currently serving as Peace Corps volunteers, and
Whereas, this ranking is 23 places higher on the medium college list than in
2007, and
Whereas, since the Peace Corps was created, 714 UVM graduates have
served, and the school ranks 52nd in the total number of alumni who have
entered the Peace Corps, and
Whereas, Middlebury College ranked 16th in 2007 among small colleges in
the number of its alumni now serving in the Peace Corps with 17 of the
school’s graduates currently volunteering, and
Whereas, Vermonters’ active participation in the Peace Corps reflects a
strong commitment in this state to public service, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the general assembly honors the outstanding public service
contribution of the University of Vermont and Middlebury College students
and other Vermonters who have joined the Peace Corps to serve our nation and
help promote good will around the world, and be it further

Resolved: That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this
resolution to Amanda Richardson at the University of Vermont Peace Corps
office in Burlington and to the Middlebury College Career Services office.
