Planned Giving Conference Conference n. 1. a meeting for consultation and discussion (The Macquarie Dictionary 1989 Edition) The Salvation Army Any Where Corps 17th September 2007 The purpose of this conference is to give everyone an opportunity to hear and discuss critical issues related to giving to God through Planned Giving. We want there to be discussion and growth through consultation with one another. The conference theme is: “ Conference Worship Order ” Worship Time of Prayer Video 1 ‘Mission’ Discussion Groups Mission and Vision Video 2 ‘Money’ Discussion Groups Testimony Finance Presentation Worship Drama Item Offering Video 3 ‘Me’ Response and Prayer Final Song Benediction and Grace Conference Clip #1 (4 minutes) Matthew 28:19 “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I command you” Trinitarian faith Money was of no importance to the young church. Or was it? Acts 2:42-47 “They devoted themselves to the Apostles teaching” “Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the Apostles” “All the believers were together and had everything in common.” “Selling all their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as they had need” Were people turned off church? No, they stayed and the numbers grew daily! The mission still needed resources. They were 100% reliant on The Holy Spirit but projects needed funding even then Discussion Points: 1. 2. 3. What do Mission and Giving have in common? Imagine and chat about what you think the 1 st century church might have been like Ask the question: “What mission resources do we lack as a corps, because we simply cannot afford them?” Conference Clip #2 (5 minutes 30 seconds) Co-Mission. We all co operate with Christ Joint Ministry God takes our part in the mission seriously Acts 5 Ananias and Sapphira The young church was committed to mission but they were mucking around Acts 7 a man called Stephen Stephen was “Full of the Holy Spirit and Wisdom” “A man full of God’s grace and power” Stephen lived out and died for the mission There is a strong link between money and mission in the New Testament Acts 10:4 Peter was given a vision from God The angel said to Peter, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a remembrance to God” Vision is like a ‘mission map’ it is the road your corps needs to take to fulfil the mission Discussion Points: 1. 2. 3. Talk about the relationship between mission, money and ministry Imagine getting a vision from God like Peter had Ask the question: does our corps have a vision (mission map) that drives everything you do? If it has, what is it? Conference Clip #3 (8 minutes) A French fisherman once wrote: ‘Help me, O God! My boat is so small and thy ocean so wide’ Our mission can seem that overwhelming sometimes 1 Chronicles 29 God gave (King) David a vision: Build a temple for God He said, “With all my resources I have provided for the temple of God” He gave his personal treasure as well (around $1.3 Billion) He gave to fulfil God’s vision He consecrated himself and showed great leadership to his nation as they too, consecrated themselves and gave to God “Then the leaders…commanders…officials…gave willingly” “The people rejoiced at the willing response to God of their leaders, for they had given whole heartedly to the Lord” But David recognised that it was God’s vision and what he had done, in fact what any of us can do, is give God back what was His in the first place The responsibility for the mission becomes ours “My boat is so small and your ocean so wide” The mission is large, our resources are God’s, the possibilities … are endless. Action Points After thought and prayer, I will commit to the following (tick, as appropriate): I will find out what our corps mission is I will intentionally give at least my tithe as a means of thanking God and supporting Christ’s mission I will discover what mission means for me personally I will seek God regarding my ministry as a member of the ‘priesthood of all believers’ in this corps I will seek a vision from God for my life I will support the work of my corps I will acknowledge that leading the mission on a local level is difficult and my leaders need my support and prayer In summary, I will give of time, tithes and talents as an expression of my relationship with God and as a means of fulfilling my part in the local mission of Christ Signature: Date:
