Learning Objectives
To understand how Pascal’s triangle is generated.
To identify patterns in Pascal’s triangle.
Learning Outcomes
All
Will understand how Pascal’s triangle is constructed and have worked as a group to
present a presentation of their findings.
Most
Will have made some discoveries about the number patterns that can be found in Pascal’s
Triangle and have investigated what patterns are made when you colour different multiples
on the triangle.
Few
Will be able to identify more complex patterns such as the hockey stick pattern.
The ideas/concepts, skills and subject material you aim to teach
Equality, diversity & inclusion strategies
Give students a choice of presentation techniques to show off their work
incorporating their different learning styles.
Encourage mixed ability group-work.
Ensure there are worksheets available for students to use if they need extra
assistance.
Groups or individuals with specific needs (initials only), differentiation, TA deployment
What the students will have learned during the lesson
Health and safety and wellbeing

Assessment for Learning
What do we want the pupils to learn?
For each task what are the main learning points
(skills, Knowledge, understanding)?
How will I organise the class and resources?
What key instructions are needed? What will
the class be doing?
For the main tasks, how will I adapt the task to
make sure that all pupils are challenged?
How do I know if they have learnt? What
strategies will I use to check this?
5 mins
Investigating how to form Pascal’s
Triangle
All students to consider in prep for
class discussion.
Assess in following discussion.
10 mins
Understanding the History of Pascal’s
Triangle and how it is generated.
Start thinking about the kind of
patterns students might want to
investigate.
All students to participate in class
discussion and learn from each other.
Assess through student participation
in class discussion.
30 mins
Investigating patterns in Pascal’s
Triangle
Starter - Image of Pascal’s Triangle
on whiteboard, students to consider
how the numbers are generated.
PowerPoint presentation about the
history of Pascal and how Pascal’s
triangle is formed.
Class discussion about the sorts of
patterns students might want to look
at and how they might go about
investigating them.
Students put into groups and required
to investigate patterns in Pascal’s
Triangle and create a presentation for
the end of the lesson. Students have
choice of presentation techniques to
accommodate for different learning
styles.
Assess through circulating amongst
pupils and ensuring understanding of
the task.
Ask questions to prompt further
investigation and understanding.
15 mins
Presenting findings from
investigations.
Put students in mixed ability groups
so they can learn different skills from
each other, more able students can
consolidate understanding and less
able students have the opportunity to
learn from their peers.
Worksheets available to prompt
investigation if pupils feel they need
them.
All members of group to be involved
somehow in presentation to
encourage less confident and less
able students to communicate what
they have learnt.
Students’ presentations of findings.
2
Assess through communication of
findings.
Lesson Plan 2010/11
Lesson evaluation - to be completed after teaching this lesson. Reflect on what you did that either enabled or hampered learning.
Pupil progress
Did you achieve your SMART targets? Did the pupils meet the learning outcomes? How do you know?
Action to take next lesson with the class a) to improve my teaching and b) to improve the classes learning. Please refer to the Profile Characteristics.
