MISSION STATEMENT: The Academy for Information Technology is a small, four-year, career academy that
fosters critical thinking skills in its culturally diverse student population. By stressing intellectual curiosity, hard
work, technological expertise, and ethical behavior, the school community guides its students to achieve their
greatest potential. The AIT graduate is prepared academically, technologically, and interpersonally for the
challenges of the future.
STUDENT SELECTION: Applicants are selected from an extremely diverse population of eighth grade
students in each of the twenty school districts of Union County. Students are selected to attend the Academy for
Information Technology in a competitive process based on the following criteria:
 Grade point average (7th – 8th grade)
 Standardized Test Scores (7th grade)
 2 Admissions Assessments (Math & Reading Comprehension/Writing Skills)
CURRICULUM
COURSE DESIGNATION: The Academy for Information Technology day is divided into four block-time
instructional periods in an alternating A/B day schedule. Because students are admitted to the school through a
competitive process, all courses are designed and taught at the honors or enriched levels and are not
specifically labeled as such; there is no tracking. In this sequence, all graduation requirements will be met.
Courses designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement  examination are designated as “AP.”
ACADEMY FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
The Academy for Information Technology is comprised of a four-year program dedicated to preparing students for the
information technology and business industries. Students in the Class of 2012 will earn a minimum of 144 high school
credits and 6 Union County College credits through this course of study.
English: English I-IV, AP Literature and Composition
Mathematics: Combined Algebra (covers both Algebra I and II topics), Geometry/Trigonometry, Mathematical Analysis,
Calculus, AP Calculus I/AB, AP Calculus II/BC, Probability and Statistics, AP Statistics

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Students must earn a minimum of 110 credits to graduate with a high school diploma endorsed by the New Jersey
Department of Education. The suggested minimum coursework for the Academy for Information Technology is as
follows:




Four years of English
Four years of Health, Safety and Physical Education
Four years of Science
Three years of Social Studies
 Four years of Mathematics
 One year of Visual, Performing, and/or Practical Arts
 Three years of World Language

AWARDS AND HONORS
 High Honor Roll: Awarded each marking period to students earning 90 or above in all subjects.
 Honor Roll: Awarded each marking period to students earning 80 or above in all subjects.
 National Honor Society: Open to juniors and seniors who meet the society’s standards for academics, character,
leadership, and service. Students must have a QPA of 90 or above in order to be considered.
 Spanish Honor Society: Open to juniors and seniors who meet the society’s standards for academic excellence in
Spanish. Students must have a QPA of 90 or above in Spanish and an overall QPA of 80 to be considered.
QUALITY POINT AVERAGE: The Quality Point Average (QPA) appearing on the high school transcript is
unweighted and includes all subjects with the exception of coursework taken at Union County College and any repeated
coursework. The GPA for Union County College coursework can be found on the college transcript accompanying the
high school record.
ARTICULATION AGREEMENT WITH UNION COUNTY COLLEGE: Through June 2010, the Academy
for Information Technology, in conjunction with Union County College in Cranford, NJ provided its students with the
opportunity to earn college credit in Information Technology during the course of the regular school day. All students in
the class of 2012 were required to enroll in one course in their freshman and sophomore years for a total of 6 college
credits. Credit and grades earned through this collaborative program appear on an official transcript from Union County
College. Grades also appear on the high school transcript for informational purposes only.
ARTICULATION AGREEMENT WITH NEW JERSEY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY: Through an
articulation agreement with the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), students who meet the conditions of the
agreement and choose to attend NJIT have the opportunity to earn college credit and continue their education at NJIT after
graduation. All students who are accepted to AIT through the fall of 2015 will be eligible for joint admission under this
agreement.
COMMUNITY SERVICE: Every student is encouraged to complete a total of 40 hours of community service while
attending the Academy for Information Technology. Twenty hours should be completed by the end of the sophomore
year and the remainder before graduation. These hours should be fulfilled with at least two different community service
activities.

Approximately 99% of students among the Union County Academy for Information Technology’s four graduating classes
have chosen to further their education beyond high school, with 96% attending four-year colleges and universities.
