Discussion:
In a radiation emergency, volunteers with professional experience and background in any of the radiation sciences (Health Physics, Medical Physics, Radiation Safety, etc.) can make significant contributions to their community’s response to such a public health emergency. SERVGA ( www.servga.gov
) is Georgia’s State Emergency Registry of
Volunteers and is administered by the GA Department of Human Resources, Division of
Public Health. SERVGA integrates local, regional and statewide volunteer programs (such as the Medical Reserve Corps) to assist emergency response and public safety organizations during a disaster. It is part of a national initiative to coordinate and mobilize volunteers to respond to all types of emergencies. As the Chem/Rad Planner for the Georgia
Division of Public Health, Mr. Kevin Caspary worked closely with Ms. Rachel Vasconez, the
SERVGA coordinator, to develop a volunteer registry for radiation professionals. During this
Chapter meeting, Mr. Caspary will provide an overview of the SERVGA program and discuss the benefits of being registered as a public health radiation volunteer. If you are interested in using your radiation knowledge to potentially help your community at a time of need, you will be interested in SERVGA, and you will find this talk very informative.
Directions to the MSE Building are changing frequently. Best available directions will be sent before the meeting.
Tentative Meeting Schedule: 2008 - April 8; May 13; June 10; HPS Meeting in July; possible picnic in August.
