RPTS 601 Leisure and Consumption—Objectives & Discussion Questions Readings for the Day Veblen, Thorstein (1899). The Theory of the Leisure Class (pages 22-101). Objectives for the Day 1. We will understand the basic principles underlying conspicuous leisure and conspicuous consumption. 2. We will examine the usefulness of Veblen's ideas to modern society. Discussion Questions 1. What is an invidious distinction? 2. What is the primary difference between conspicuous leisure and conspicuous consumption? Give some examples of each. How do members of a leisure class show they are indeed members of a leisure class? 3. What is the basis of conspicuous leisure and conspicuous consumption (or a leisure class in general)? [Hint: Veblen says this drive is also the basis of private ownership.] 4. In what ways has pecuniary emulation changed throughout history? 5. If we agree with Veblen's assertion that emulation underlies the desire to accumulate wealth, what implications does this have in terms of people’s behavior today? 6. How does Veblen treat women? Is he sympathetic to them, degrading, objective, etc? 7. To what extent are Veblen's ideas current? Are they outdated? In what ways do Veblen’s ideas conflict (or coincide) with ideas related to time scarcity? 8. Why do you think people might have a problem describing their own leisure in terms of Veblen's ideas?
