1994-1995 Annual Report Frances Simes Hastings Natural History Reservation Prepared by: Mark R. Stromberg Research Program Hastings primarily supports graduate level field research. Both resident, full-time UC staff and full-time visiting researchers from other universities work at Hastings. A new record number of user-days (a little over 6,000) was set by those affiliated with universities (Figure 1, Appendix 1) while the number of individual researchers using Hastings also increased (Figure 2) but not to record levels. Most of the increase in use was by resident postdoctoral researchers and field assistants. Resident UC staff include Dr. Walter Koenig (Associate Research Zoologist, Museum of Vertebrate Zoology) and Dr. Mark R. Stromberg (Reserve Manager and Academic Coordinator, Museum of Vertebrate Zoology). Dr. Janis Dickinson, a full-time resident researcher, is a Research Associate, Museum of Vertebrate Zoology. Mark Johnson, the full-time Hastings reserve steward (Museum of Vertebrate Zoology), commutes from a nearby residence. Dr. Koenig’s research program on Acorn Woodpeckers has spanned nearly 20 years at Hastings, and this year included Dr. Joe Haydock (Post-doctoral fellow, full time resident), several graduate students and many undergraduate field assistants. Dr. Haydock, with Dr. Dickinson (see below), is processing DNA samples in the Hastings lab, to determine paternal and maternal relationships in woodpeckers which have simultaneously been observed in complex social settings. Another resident post-graduate fellow, Dr. Johannes Knops, worked much of this year with Dr. Koenig on several projects investigating patterns in acorn production, including an analysis of wide-area (global?) synchronization of mast crops in trees. Dr. Koenig’s resident graduate student was Ginger Bolen, who is studying social behavior of the Yellow-billed Magpie, on an NSF graduate fellowship. Dr. Koenig directed a group of field assistants year round to collect behavioral data from breeding groups of acorn woodpeckers and biomass production by oaks. Dr. Janis Dickinson completed the set-up of the Hastings lab for DNA analysis to determine parental relationships in western bluebirds. Similar work is being done by Dr. Haydock on Acorn Woodpeckers. Dr. Dickinson organized a group of field assistants to observe the social behavior of over 100 breeding pairs of Hastings Annual Report 1994-95. Page 1 western bluebirds and she has maintained an active publication record, with four papers in various stages of publication. Dr. Stromberg’s part-time research focused on ecological restoration of native, perennial grasslands as well as setting up a geographic information system (GIS) and global positioning system (GPS) at Hastings. Visiting researchers from a wide variety of University faculty and staff from across the nation worked at Hastings. Dr. Taye Teferi, a post-doctoral fellow with Dr. David Gubernick (Univ. Wisconsin-Madison) spent the year at Hastings. Dr. Teferi employed two field assistants year-round to help with a field study of parental behavior in the California deer mouse. Dr. James Thomson, State University- Stony Brook, split his NSFfunded mid-career sabbatical between Hastings and the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology. Dr. Michael Soule, UC-Santa Cruz, worked at Hastings to set up a group of graduate and undergraduate students involved in a study of the genetics of the pocket gopher. Dr. Paul Neal, UC Santa Barbara, returned to re-sample oak flowers and follow up on acorn production. While over 500 non-UC faculty or staff user-days were recorded at Hastings, most of that was by seven researchers resident at Hastings for more than a few days. Post doctoral residents accounted for much of the UC-sponsored user-days at Hastings. Graduate student education and research continue to be a primary focus at Hastings. A total of 515 userdays by graduate students were recorded, with 236 associated with UC-Berkeley. Uwe Kuhn and Annette Wolf, both students at the Max Planck Institute in Miens, Germany, studied photosynthetic gas exchange in lichens at Hastings. Peter Trenham, a graduate student of Dr. Brad Shaffer (UC-Davis), started his graduate studies based on the long-term population monitoring of the threatened California tiger salamanders in Blomquist Pond and Laguna Conejo. Dr. Soule’s students installed a one-hectare enclosure to allow study of marked gophers. Sanjayan Muttulingam is the lead graduate student on this gopher project. Once again, David Richardson, Leicester University, traveled from the UK to monitor nests and social behavior of the northern oriole on Hastings and surrounding private lands. Certainly the largest group of University staff were hosted at Hastings in October for the annual meeting of the Natural Reserve System. Nearly 80 people were provided with housing and food for a three day management workshop. Hastings Annual Report 1994-95. Page 2 Hastings continues to support students and other non-UC biologists. Undergraduate use of Hastings has increased to 185 user-days (88 from UC-Berkeley). Field assistants accounted for over 1600 user-days. Two undergraduate field assistants were supported with NSF funds, part of the Research Experiences for Undergraduates program. Other users include a film crew from Japan Broadcasting Corporation (Acorn Woodpeckers), and researchers from the US Forest Service, Princeton University, schools in Indiana, Iowa, and elsewhere (Appendix 1). Research published this year by investigators active at Hastings is listed in Table 1. Educational Program Hastings only hosted two classes (Appendix 2). The mammalogy class from UC-Berkeley and a class of docents from the Jasper Ridge Preserve visited Hastings. Class use was limited in the spring due to unusual flooding, canceling several visits. Although no K-12 students visited Hastings, and were thus counted in the user logs, Stromberg, Koenig and Dickinson all contributed to local K-12 schools, serving on various commitees, presenting in individual classes and assisting with teachers. Hastings now has a home page (http://www.ucop.edu:80/DANR/reserves/hastings.html). Mark Stromberg and Eric Rainbolt (NRS) developed a home page for the Organization of Biological Field Stations (OBFS) which is maintained at the Jasper Ridge server at Stanford (http://jasper.stanford.edu/OBFS/). As information management plans develop, we hope to make some of the data sets at Hastings available through these outlets. Each month, a newsletter was written and mailed to about 65 local neighbors as well as those doing research on Hastings, administrators on the Berkeley campus, and the statewide NRS office. Local newspapers ran several articles on research at Hastings, including conservation of local amphibians, native grass restoration and the role of lichen photosynthesis in global greenhouse gases. Facilities Development In July and August, final work was done on the new water system at Hastings. Contractors finished installing six, 3,500 gallon water tanks, a new water main and 4 fire hydrants. A new fill line from the well to the storage tanks was installed. Storage tanks were installed on the hillside above the older 10,000 gallon Hastings Annual Report 1994-95. Page 3 redwood water tank which has been kept filled and available for fire suppression needs. Ozone injectors were installed on each storage tank to purify the water. Chlorine treatment was added to all three Hastings wells. An automatic control mechanism was installed to keep the tanks filled. Funds from the Office of the President, Natural Reserve System, allowed us to hire two carpenters who continued to work in July and August. With Mark Johnson, Dave Smith and Barry Powell worked to prevent rodent entry into the buildings. The purpose of the work was to reduce the possibility of exposure of residents to hanta virus. Periodic checks of mice from Hastings were negative for hanta virus. Year-end funds from 1994 were made available to NRS; we were able to obtain funds for a new roof on the workshop. This work will occur in FY 95-96. A grant from NSF allowed Mark Stromberg to install a community base station (Trimble) in the Hastings Lab. With the portable Trimble Pathfinder Basic Plus unit, we can take locations and do differential corrections. As part of a grant from Mike Markkula (neighbor), corrected color orthophotos were prepared from new aerial photos and digitized for the Hastings Geographic Information System. Additional vector files of topographic, road, eight surveyed reference points, and legal boundary data were also donated. ArcView 2.1 for the Macintosh was donated by ESRI, the company which sells the software. On March 9, a hundred year flood isolated the Monterey Peninsula and badly eroded Robertson Creek, Finch Creek and the Carmel River. Martin Road was impassable, and the Hallisey House was flooded and was abandoned for several weeks. Culverts and the crossings on Big Creek, Finch Creek and the entrance bridge were covered with debris. The Carmel Valley Road was closed for two weeks. Mark Stromberg worked with FEMA (Federal) and OES (state) teams and campus representatives to implement emergency repairs. Mark Johnson’s contributions during these difficult times were remarkable. Buildings and facilities at the Headquarters and the Robertson House were relatively unaffected by the flooding. Damage of over $100,000 was documented. Neighboring ranches (Boekenoogen, Oak Ridge) provided over $60,000 of work, contributing the time on their bulldozers and backhoes. NRS advanced a loan of $20K to start emergency work. We hope to obtain at least that much from FEMA and be able to repay the loan. Hastings Annual Report 1994-95. Page 4 Table 1. Publications from research at the Hastings Reservation, 1994-1995.
