The campus of the university is on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by gardens and situated only 40 minutes from the rainforest. Volunteering: UBL welcomes volunteers, individually or in groups. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not essential. The library and the maintenance staff are happy to work with volunteers. The dormitories and student apartments where volunteers are housed all have kitchen facilities. Volunteers purchase and cook their own food. When education and exposure groups are on campus volunteers may sign on to eat with them for a modest fee. If you do not wish to volunteer during your sabbatical, furnished apartments may be available at a modest fee. See http://www.ubila.net/ (English version at http://www.unibiblica.net/). Students from many Christian traditions and Latin American countries train at the seminary, which has close ties with The United Church of Canada. The students are trained in traditional disciplines such as Bible, preaching, church history, ethics, and gender studies, but also they become involved in community service in their field placements and congregations. Visiting groups often travel to congregations and communities outside of Matanzas. Sabbatical participants can easily go along for the ride! Page 9 of 11 Other Self-funded Volunteer opportunities: China Teach English as a Second Language If you are a fluent English speaker interested in offering a month of service in China, think about volunteering with the Amity Foundation's Summer English Program. Participate in cross-cultural dialogue as an English-speaking volunteer working with rural middle school Chinese teachers of English to develop their listening and speaking skills. Chinese participants see foreign friends engaged in service that directly benefits their communities, while volunteers gain a deeper understanding of an important and growing nation that is often misunderstood and misrepresented in their own countries. Seemingly small seeds of friendship and communication are sown in these summer classrooms, but taken together they point the way to a greater harvest of development and understanding. A college or university degree is required, previous teaching experience highly recommended required, and overseas experience is an asset—as well as good health and willingness to work in tough conditions. The program runs each summer, for six weeks from early July to early August. Deadlines for applications each year are April 1. This is a self-funded, short-term (6-week) volunteer opportunity. For more information see http://www.amityfoundation.org/wordpress/teach-with-us/summer-englishprogram-for-middle-school-english-teachers/ Japan Asian Rural Institute The “ARI” is a training center for rural community leaders on a 6 hectare farm in Northern Japan. Leaders, both women and men, who live and work in grassroots rural communities primarily in Asia, Africa and the Pacific form a community of learning each year together with staff and other residents. The focus of its training program is to create an educational environment in which these leaders can discover within themselves and within their people a more desirable image of community. Volunteers are an integral part of the ARI community serving in a variety of supportive roles. There are usually ten to twelve volunteers from Japan and around the globe who live and work at ARI for 60 days up to one year. They live simply and work humbly, but find great rewards in their time. Their hard work offers volunteers a chance to grow as individuals, as leaders and as valuable community members. Volunteers need to be ready for challenges and physically demanding work. This is a self-funded, short-term, volunteer opportunity.
