Statute for Members
In accordance with the decision reached by the Committee on Legal Affairs and the Internal
Market at its meeting of 27-29 November 1999, please find attached a calculation of the average
monthly remuneration of a Member of the European Parliament made on the basis of the latest
figures by the rapporteur, Mr Willi Rothley, as recommended in the resolution of 3 December
1998 on the Statute for Members. The figures given overleaf have been carefully researched, but
their accuracy cannot be guaranteed.
The rapporteur also wishes to point out that the remuneration of Members of Parliament in Spain
and the Netherlands is higher than that of Members of the European Parliament. The second
table takes this fact into account.

*** The rates of exchange for these currencies are taken from OJ C 355, 8.12.1999, p. 1. The other rates of exchange were fixed definitively by
Regulation (EC) 2866/98.
(1) Finland: monthly salaries range from 16 824 FIM to 21 484 FIM. Calculations were made on the basis of the arithmetic mean of 19 154 FIM. In
addition, an annual payment is made of "Return from holiday money" (lomaltapaluurahan), amounting to between ca. 8 748 FIM and 11 171 FIM. The
arithmetic mean of 9 959.5 FIM was added to the annual total of monthly salaries.
(2) Denmark: Monthly salaries amount to between DKR 34 613.08 and DKR 40 614.42, depending on the distance from Copenhagen. The arithmetic
mean of 37 613.75 DKR was used as the basis for calculation.
(3) Belgium: Annual remuneration amounts to BEF 2 631.262, in addition to which an annual holiday payment of BEF 60 070 and a yearly premium
of BEF 76 772 are paid. A notional monthly salary of BEF 230 675.33 paid 12 times a year was used as the basis for calculation.
