Workshop #1: Write for (a) Change—Carolyn Pogue (Open to Children aged 10 through to Adults) How do words create change in our lives? Is the pen really mightier than the sword? We explore these questions and more through free-fall writing exercises, discussion and sharing our stories with one another. Writing in any genre and learning about others who create change, participants explore the power of words. If you are a writer, not a writer, brave, frightened or curious—this workshop is for you! Workshop #2: Moving from the Old Story to the New Story—Rev. Dr. Bill Phipps Crossroads is a spiritual crisis. The issues we face—whether it’s climate change, or the spread of diseases like HIV/AIDS, or the rich and poor gap, or gender equality—whatever it is, all of these things are spiritual issues. And to me, the basic spiritual question is - what are human beings for? How are we to relate to one another? And maybe most importantly, in terms of the crisis now, is how are we to live in the Earth? So, not only do we need astute social and political thinkers, we need the spiritual wisdom of the ages. Bill will develop this theme further in his Saturday evening keynote address and Sunday morning message. Although the three events will be related, they will not duplicate one another. Workshop #3: What is the Art of Peace Camp?—Carolyn Pogue (Open to Children aged 10 through to Adults) Carolyn has co-ordinated The Art of Peace Camp for 3 years. This half-day camp explores peace with self, Nature, family & community and the world through the arts. Join her for an experiential session as she shares what she has learned about having fun and making serious peace with kids 9 to 13 years old. If you wonder how to inject a little more peace into the community or want to explore ways to have fun and contribute to a Culture of Peace—come on out! The Dinner... Join us for an outstanding Hot Buffet Dinner at RIM Park, catered by Angie's Kitchen with assistance from our Men's Club. Tickets will be $30 each and will be available to purchase after our Sunday morning church services or by contacting Swain Van Camp at 519-8840505, svc@rogers.com or Bill Spall at 519-746-1445, bspall@sympatico.ca 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Cash Bar and Social Buffet Dinner keynote address by Rev. Dr. Bill Phipps The Book... The following is information about Rev. Dr. Bill Phipps book “Cause for Hope: Humanity at the Crossroads”. Copies of this book are available by contacting Arnold and Pat Proud at 519895-2371. We encourage everyone to read it prior to this Anniversary weekend. Hope lies in society becoming conscious and aware—even roused—about the fact that there is nothing inevitable about a growing gap between the rich and the poor, about the continued plight of our aboriginal communities, or the perilous state of our natural environment. Cause for Hope offers up an inspirational vision for social progress, one which compels us to bridge the disconnect between our values and our vision for a just society and the often dissonant direction in which our world seems to be heading. This provocative book from one of the most provocative leaders in the church challenges the governing story that has shaped and defined Western culture and society—a story that has manifested itself in ecological destruction; war and its obscene military expenditures; unprecedented consumerism; economic disparity between rich and poor; mistreatment of non-white cultures and races; sexism; and fear. It is time for a new story, and the author takes on the task of outlining the core themes of this new story with the passion and vision of a modern-day prophet.
