3rd Quarter – Rocks and Minerals Syllabus
Feb. 21st – Get new books (Earth Science – red book), collect items that need to be turned
in from the energy unit, use the I-pads to research the layers of the Earth
Feb. 22nd – Computer lab – grade rock cycle stage one and two, draw and label the four
layers of the Earth and then explain what each layer is and what it is made of
Feb. 23rd – Computer Lab – pre-quiz on Rocks (not for a grade), work on layers of the
Earth, Research careers in Earth Science then answer the following questions (1. List 5
careers in Earth Science 2. Which one of those is your favorite 3. Explain what that
career does 4. How much money would you be making in this career 5. What type of
education background do you need 6. Why did you choose this career)
Feb. 24th – Computer Lab – Finish the Earth layers and the Earth Science Careers – if
finished early you can play free rice or any game on Energy Ant.
Feb. 27th – Cupcake Core Sampling (in class lab) – questions due on Tuesday
Feb. 28th – Sedimentary Rocks – read intro in my rock book, take notes on power point
Feb. 29th – Igneous Rocks – read intro in my rock book, take notes on power point
March 1st – Metamorphic Rocks – read intro in my rock book, take notes on power point
– Learn the Rock Song
March 2nd – Rock Song – come up with an acrostic poem or a story to remember two
types of rocks (due on Tuesday March 6th)
March 5th – Rock Song – Look at different pictures of the rock cycle on Smart Board,
work on Key Vocab (due Wednesday)
March 6th – Rock Song – Draw the Rock Cycle on colored paper – must use key vocab
words
March 7th – Rock Song – Brain pop videos on Rocks
March 8th – Rock Song – Buffer Day
March 9th – Rock Song – post quiz on Rocks (for a grade – same as pre-test) go over in
class
March 12th – Rock Cycle Computer Lab (stage three)
March 13th – Rock Cycle Computer Lab (stage three)
March 14th – Minerals – Key Vocab (due Friday) pre-quiz (not for a grade)
March 15th – Minerals – Luster, Cleavage, Fracture, Color (take notes), brain pop video
March 16th – Minerals – Hardness, Streak, Density (take notes) hand out review sheet,
brain pop video
March 19th – Minerals – post quiz (for a grade) same as pre-quiz, Rock and Mineral lab
stations (candy rocks, mohs hardness, identify minerals, identify rocks, computer web
quest)
March 20th – Rock and Mineral lab stations (candy rocks, mohs hardness, identify
minerals, identify rocks, computer web quest)
March 21st – Rock and Mineral Test
March 22nd – Collect Rock books, Last day to turn in Rock and Mineral stuff, go over
test
March 23rd – End of 3rd Quarter (Talent Show in the afternoon – award for no missing
assignments)
