Part 3
Extended Activities
1 Dictation
Today, the old attitudes toward how children should be brought up have
largely disappeared. For many children, family life has become more relaxed and
less strict. Many young people in Britain and US have a considerable amount of
freedom and they can enjoy the things they are interested in: music, sports,
television, even money and fashion. Life has become easier and more enjoyable.
8 / 115
However, along with an easy life and permissive families, a number of social
problems have arise for the young. For example, some schools have problems with
discipline and motivation; and crime and drug taking in some areas have reached
serious levels.
During the 1980s and early 1990s, unemployment among school-dropouts was
a particular problem, with many facing a bleak future and having little hope of
finding a decent job.

human beings, but he should not deny his true nature. Besides, he should
accept whatever is forced on him. In other words, he should be faithful to
his master no matter who the master is.
6. Human beings need dogs for various reasons. They may need a dog to
help with some specific tasks like hunting or guiding, or want a dog to
keep burglars away. Looking after a dog may give their children a sense
of responsibility. They may want other people to admire their dogs if the

 Since its independence, Singapore has been struggling with its
biggest enemy of lack of natural resources.
 They made treaties with Malaysia for fresh water supplies as the
two countries are very close. Today they are almost connected
because of the cross straight bridges between them.
 The trade-off is the heavy burden of power supply for wastewater
treatment. The electricity bill will be very large for the country
because it is dependent on the natural gas imported from other
countries. So to some degree, Singapore did not solve the
problem of water shortage. It can be said that it is one form of
dependence(dependence on imported gas from other countries) to
substitute another(dependence on the water from Malaysia).

The sequence is: E-C-A-D-B
Football has a long history which can be dated back to ancient
Roman times. The early form of football in the Middle Ages was so
dangerous that it was not until the 17th century that it was allowed to
be played in England. The game was saved from dying out in the 18 th
century by schoolboys of English public school who wanted to use
up their extra energies after study.By the time of Queen Victoria, the
game became very popular among universities so that rules were
developed in order to hold competition between different schools. In
the 19th century the Football Association(FA)helped form the
rules,improve the equipment,conditions of the playground,and the
way of playing as it is played today.

There is no place like the English countryside for those who
love it: its firm yet gentle lines of hills and valleys, its ordered
confusion of features, its parks and lowlands, its ancient castles and
houses, its cottages and churches, its farms and trees, its pools and
ponds and shining rivers all present a peaceful and lovely sight.
Much of the countryside is of course farmland but there are often
45 / 115
paths through the fields, called public footpaths, which you can walk
along. It is good for people to walk through such a land, forgetting
for a time all the worries of the world, and become just happy
wanderers in a world of pleasant breezes and song-birds and shady
trees.

accident. This theory has some support in the invention of the
steamboat and the airplane. However, this reason does not explain
why

second theory considers the individual as the most important

traditional view of education is expressed in the formal teaching
activities conducted in schools and universities. A better
definition is that education is a lifelong process that includes
both formal schooling and the broad range of other experiences,
including television viewing ,out-of –class activities, and family
living , that usually take more time and often have more
powerful influences than the formal schooling does.

The situation gradually changes as the

coldly. When the mayor took the dental

reversed. The mayor was put at mercy
of Escovar now. He inspected his

The mayor resumes his power.
But when the operation was fished, the
mayor reversed the situation now. he
was still polite at the beginning in his
casual military solute, stretching his
power at the end when he said“it was

was an absolute power in this town.
What does this change tell
us?
The story illustrates how professional
knowledge and skills can temporarily
change the power relationship between a
dictator and ordinary citizens. In this
power struggle, the political power
seems to be strong, but not absolute. One
of these days, it will fall at the mercy of
something more powerful.

A Writing interpretations.
Example
Monday dawned warm and rainless. Aurelio Escovar, a dentist
without a degree, and a very early riser, opened his office at six. He
took some false teeth, still mounted in their plaster mold, out of the
glass case and put on the table a fistful of instruments which he
arranged in size order, as if they were on display.
Sample writing
It was Monday, with warm and dry weather. Aurelio Escovar
was a town dentist without much education. He wasn’t a great
dentist, just an ordinary person who scraped a living by a kind of
dental practice“affordable”to the local people. He had start work
early. He opened his office at six(pretty early), working on the
unfnished false teeth, still mounted on the plaster mould. He took
out the tools from a glass case, and spread them out as if they were
on display. It looked like that he was about to work. The mood was
89 / 115
quiet, and a little monotonous, but peaceful.

1) Rewriting;
The dentist as humbly dressed in plain clothes such as collarless
shirt, tied a knot at the neck, pants held up in suspenders. He didn’t
look like a real professional, who acted effectively, and did things on
purpose. But this dentist looked absent-minded, and didn’t know
clearly what he should do.
2) Rewriting:
He examined his work, and remarked that it was such a good job.
He felt a little satisfied at the results.
3) Rewriting:
The mayor looked at the dentist suspiciously, “Should I trust him?
I must watch him closely. ” But what he said was “All right,” and
put up a forced smile. The dentist did not return the smile. While he
was preparing for the operation, he was probably thinking,“This
bastard. Now it’s time for me to take revenge on him, but I will do it
slowly, and let him suffer as much as I can.” But Escovar tried to
cover his expression, and remained cool. He slowly brought the
basin of sterilized instruments to the workable and took them out of
the water with a pair of cold tweezers, still without hurrying. He was
90 / 115
not in a hurry. He knew that the quicker he worked, the sooner the
mayor was released from suffering. At the bottom of his heart,he
didn’t want to reduce his pain, but as a dentist, his professional ethic
ordered him to help the mayor. Anyway, he took time to get things
done one by one, pushing the spittoon with the tip of his shoe,
washing his hands in the washbasin. He tried to last as long as
possible when doing all this, focusing on the single idea of revenge.
9) Rewriting:
The mayor felt a heart-broken pain crashing his bones in his jaw,
his eyes blurred by tears of pains. He held breath with strength
until he felt the tooth was gone, and saw it thought his tears.
Suddenly, he felt relieved, and didn’t even know what kind of
suffering the tooth had once given him. He knew no more
suffering of the five previous nights at all now.

then exclaimed, “A building! Do you have any idea how much a
building costs? The buildings cost seve and a half million dollars at
Harvard.” For a moment the lady was silent. The president was

husband and said quietly, “Is that all it costs to start a university?
Why don't we just start out own?” Her husband nodded. The

(1)Japan is ageing at a surprising speed.\
(2)Human beings are ageing quickly. The implications are that
human features will be changed in the coming years: for example,
we will be more accustomed to seeing wrinkles than pimples on
our faces, more using walking frames for supporting than riding
bikes, more wearing slippers to stay indoors and smoking pipes in
an old fashion than wearing fashionable, high-heeled boots or
fancy vehicles, hiring old people than young student.
(3)But is it possible that there are advantages in an ageing society? If
we change a perspective to view this issue, we will have some
111 / 115
discoveries.
(4)Today, the ageing generation has survived bad times in their lives
such as drug abusing, over drinking alcohol, speeding in driving,
divorces etc. as the process of getting old. But after learning all
these lessons, they still have life ahead: taking part in rock’n’roll
dancing, and having rich sexual life using condoms, rather than
paralyzing on the dying bed with colostomy bags.
(5)They are leading members and advisors in our life. They help
service our work, and help protect our neighborhoods, help take
care of other elderly people, and even participate in political
activities—they unite our society acting as important liaisons
among he busy working people.
(6)It is concerned with our beliefs and attitudes to what it is to be old.
Being old is a source of happiness.
(7)…ageing baby boomers who a generation ago worshiped the
value of youth to an unprecedented degree. But now time has
changed; population has stopped soaring overzealous, energetic
and anxious young social climbers are greatly reduced in number,
what is left with us are the elderly people who are like tribal
elderly that are conservative, acting as guards of old values.
(8)The old we are, the less likely we are to be fascinated by
short-lived fashion, and the more we should appreciate things that
112 / 115
have deeper meanings, and thus are more likely to survive times.
(9)We must especially hope to keep this kind of life, or we will have
no future at all. The reason is that our baby boomers have made
mistakes and wasted natural resources when they were young, so
many and so much that we can hardly estimate their limits.
