AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE NEWS 23 JUNE 2008 Compliments of EDA Projects Pty Ltd - AUSTRALIA Tenix sale complete NEW TENDERS IN BRIEF BAE Systems has completed its acquisition of Tenix Defence following a decision by the Foreign Investment Review Board to allow the sale, which makes BAE Systems the largest defence company in Australia. “I am delighted that the sale of the Tenix defence businesses has successfully concluded,” Tenix Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Greg Hayes, said. “Our strategic intent had been to foster international growth for Tenix’s defence businesses, so the sale to BAES, with its scale, depth of production and experience, will certainly help to achieve this objective.” Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon also welcomed news of the sale’s completion. “The acquisition provides BAE Systems Australia with a broad range of defence capability areas including naval shipbuilding, armoured vehicles, aircraft support, systems integration and electronic warfare,” Mr Fitzgibbon said. To protect Defence interests, BAE has provided specific assurances through a Deed with Defence relating to the amphibious ships contract, agreed between the Commonwealth and Tenix in October 2007. The Deed also prevents BAE Systems from buying ASC if it is sold by the Australian Government. Facilities spending approved Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon has announced the Parliamentary approval of more than $1.1 billion worth of Defence facilities proposals. $623.28 million has been earmarked for the Hardened and Networked Army facilities at Edinburgh, SA. The project includes working accommodation, training facilities and a driver training area, as well as extensive site infrastructure works. Construction is planned to commence in late 2008 and be completed by 2011. $168.7 million will provide operational, maintenance and training infrastructure to support the introduction of the Multi-Role Helicopters. Construction is planned to commence in late 2008 and be completed by late 2010. Other proposals include $72.1 million for the Robertson Barracks Redevelopment to support the new Abrams tank fleet; $80.2 million for the Enoggera Redevelopment Stage One; $64.2 million for the Airborne Early Warning and Control Facilities at RAAF Base Tindal, a project including new taxiways, aprons, shelters, hydrant refuelling and associated infrastructure; and $49.8 million for RAAF Base Darwin Redevelopment. Third MRH touches down Australia’s third Multi-Role Helicopter, MRH04, has arrived on board a RAAF C-17. “The C-17 was on the return leg of an operational task and this activity has capitalised on a great opportunity to bring the MRH to Australia early,” Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Procurement, Greg Combet, said. “This is the first time, worldwide, that a helicopter of this type has been transported in a C-17. It is a significant achievement by Defence and Industry.” Defence anticipates that MRH04 will be accepted from prime contractor Australian Aerospace in July 2008, following completion of acceptance testing, and will be delivered to the 5th Aviation Regiment in Townsville to join the test and training program. “The third MRH90 will provide an increase in capacity for the test and training program for Defence’s new troop lift and maritime support helicopter,” Mr Combet said. Under Air 9000, the MRH90 is being procured to provide additional troop lift capability and provide a replacement for the Black Hawk and Sea King helicopters.
