2014-2015 Charles Schwab Foundation Scholarships In partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America Overview Charles Schwab Foundation is committed to giving back to communities by supporting employee-selected causes and fostering financial literacy through funding, involvement and expertise. The foundation offers employees and community investors a variety of ways to exercise their philanthropy, and has formed a major partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). Charles Schwab Foundation funds Money Matters: Make It CountSM to help teens make sound financial decisions, plan and prepare for the future. Money Matters promotes financial responsibility and independence among Club members ages 13 to 18 by building their basic money management skills. Participants learn how to manage a checking account, budget, save and invest. In addition to mastering these areas, Money Matters fosters academic success by introducing the college application process, which includes an application timeline, financial aid overview and tips for creating a college budget. Charles Schwab Foundation Scholarships The Charles Schwab Foundation Scholarship program is designed to highlight and promote BGCA’s Money Matters program among Club teens ages 16 to 18. Scholarships will be awarded to Club teens who demonstrate their understanding of the concepts of financial responsibility. All applicants must have participated in Money Matters. There is no limit to the number of scholarship applications that your Club can submit. Previous scholarship winners are not eligible. All applications will be reviewed by BGCA and Charles Schwab Foundation to determine the final scholarship recipients. Each Club should publicize the scholarship program among its Money Matters participants. Interested applicants should complete the application packet and submit it to the designated staff professional. The staff professional is asked to complete the staff recommendation form and to submit the complete packet to BGCA at the address listed on the following page. Scholarships will be granted based on applicants’ achievements and efforts to gain financial skills and plan for their future. Scholarship Recipients A total of 11 scholarships will be awarded for the 2014-2015 year. One $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a teen with an exceptional application; this teen will be named the National Money Matters Ambassador. Ten scholarships of $1,000 each will also be awarded. National Money Matters Ambassador The National Money Matters Ambassador will not only receive $5,000 in scholarship funds to the school of her choice, but will also have the privilege of representing BGCA and the Charles Schwab Foundation. The Ambassador will be responsible for making two or three public appearances and speaking engagements, including Club visits, conferences and press events. In addition, the Ambassador will serve on BGCA’s teen advisory board and work closely with the Money Matters management team to promote financial literacy to Club members. All expenses will be authorized and approved by BGCA. Scholarship Disbursement BGCA will issue the organization a check for the award amount. The organization will then issue a check payable jointly to the scholarship recipient and the post-secondary institution, trade or technical school he will be attending upon verification of enrollment. Please notify BGCA upon disbursement of funds to the institution. Clubs should present awards in collaboration with a local Charles Schwab office when possible.
